On the surface, it sounds like a genuine expression of emotion, and it seems perfectly reasonable.
Upon closer examination, the logic is completely untenable.
The missing person was his own granddaughter, but when he met a distant cousin who was completely unrelated to him, he immediately shifted his affections and wanted to recognize her as his granddaughter-in-law.
That's too far-fetched.
She narrowed her eyes and gently tapped her temple with her fingertip.
She turned to look at Shen Zhiyu, who had been silent all along.
"Have you taken Grandma to the hospital to have her brain checked? Shouldn't she have a brain CT scan to check for any mild cognitive impairment?"
Shen Zhiyu shook his head.
"I can't make this decision myself; I need to ask my elder brother's opinion first."
Upon hearing the old lady's heartfelt confession, Li Haitang burst into tears, crying even more heartbrokenly.
"It's all my fault... I shouldn't have made Su Qingzhi angry, I shouldn't have stolen her thunder, and I shouldn't have made things difficult for everyone..."
She raised her red eyes and looked at the old lady.
"Auntie, don't be sad for me. At worst, my mom and I will move out."
"From now on, I will live frugally, save money to rent a place, come back to see you often, buy you nutritional supplements, and talk to you..."
Su Qingzhi rolled her eyes, inwardly scoffing.
He immediately took over the conversation.
"Wow, so you finally admit you're in the way? Then hurry up and move it!"
"It's not appropriate to bring my mother to stay with relatives. We eat their food, stay at their place, and have to put up with their attitude. It's so uncomfortable."
"Since you've already said it yourself, then hurry up and pack your things and leave. Nobody's stopping you."
Li Haitang's tearful appearance froze instantly.
"Su Qingzhi! How could you say that? I'm a guest, a relative. Can't you have any basic human decency?"
Su Qingzhi looked completely innocent.
"Didn't you say you wanted to leave? I didn't kick you out. Why are you crying now? Who are you trying to fool?"
Li Haitang suddenly jumped up from the sofa.
"Fine, I'll leave! Do you think I want to stay here and put up with your sarcastic remarks? If it weren't for my great-aunt, who would want to stay and put up with your attitude?"
"I'm leaving! I'm leaving now!"
After saying that, she tossed her hair, turned around, and rushed towards the guest room, her movements so swift they didn't seem like acting.
Li Chunhua also stood up abruptly, grabbed the bag on the table, and slung it over her shoulder.
Before leaving, she glared fiercely at Su Qingzhi.
"You lot are all bullying us orphans and widows! If you're so capable, don't live in this house, and don't use the Shen family name to intimidate us!"
"Just wait and see, one day you'll regret what you've done today!"
She followed her daughter into the room.
The room fell silent immediately.
Li Chunhua immediately turned around, stood on tiptoe, and pressed her ear close to the crack in the door to listen for a while.
After confirming that no one was approaching, they slowly retreated.
"Tang, are we really moving?"
Li Haitang was bending down to take out a few folded clothes from the cabinet when she heard her mother's words and paused.
She looked down at the old light blue sweater.
It was a birthday gift from Shen Han when she was a child. It was yellowed and the edges were worn, but she could never bear to throw it away.
"Don't worry, your great-aunt won't really let us leave. Mom, if even she doesn't want us to stay, you should start crying. Tell her how your mother saved up her food rations to help you take care of her during the famine years, and how she even brought her food and vegetables in the snow with her cane. Also, mention Shen Han. As long as you mention Shen Han, she'll definitely soften her heart."
Li Chunhua nodded repeatedly.
“My daughter is so smart! She’s completely different from your spineless father. Listen to your mother, the key is to get something for nothing. Since you’re staying here and not being kicked out, then stay until the end; if you really have to kick her out, then you have to get something tangible before you leave.”
Li Haitang smiled, the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, but there wasn't much emotion in her expression.
In the living room, the old lady started again.
She sat in the wicker chair, clutching a handkerchief in one hand and patting her knee with the other.
Tears came suddenly, and snot followed.
"No one remembers Chen Han anymore, no one cares about this old woman..."
Even my beloved Begonia is being driven away!
"I worked so hard to raise this family, and in the end, I became the superfluous one! Haitang is gone, who will talk to me? Who will bring me tea and water? Who will remember who stayed by my bedside and fed me medicine when I had a wheezing cough in the middle of the night?"
Just then, Li Haitang and her daughter came out carrying bags.
The moment the footsteps sounded, the argument in the living room came to an abrupt halt.
Everyone looked over, including the old lady who was still wiping away tears.
She sobbed, but her eyes were fixed on the two bags.
Li Haitang and her daughter exchanged a glance, understanding each other without saying a word.
Li Haitang took a few steps forward.
"Auntie, I'm leaving now. Take care of yourself, eat on time, and don't stay up all night watching the radio. I'll definitely come often in the future and bring you gifts for holidays. If you miss me, just have Brother Shen Zhiyu send me a message... I'll be back right away."
Upon hearing this, the old lady wailed even louder and leaned back.
"Don't go, girl! This is your home. If you leave, what will happen to my old bones? Shen Han will come to me in my dreams to settle scores! I watched you grow up since you were a child. Now you just leave like that? The wind and rain are fierce outside. Who can protect you?"
Su Qingzhi sat on the sofa in the corner, watching coldly and silently complaining in her heart.
All this talk is like a final farewell; we might just bump into each other in the yard tomorrow and be eating watermelon.
Is it really necessary?
Shen Zhiyu leaned against the door frame, his hands in his pockets, silently watching the farce unfold.
Suddenly, he realized the atmosphere had frozen.
