Chapter 163 Subsidies

Zhenzhen immediately looked up, her eyes sparkling.

Zhouzhou looked at her mother, then at Zhenzhen, her little face full of curiosity.

She scooped up a spoonful of pale yellow steamed egg custard and wobbled as she handed it forward.

"Pot, pot~ Egg~ Pot, pot, time!"

Zhenzhen's eyes welled up with tears, and she quickly handed the bowl forward.

"Thank you... thank you, Zhouzhou sister."

Hehe~

Zhouzhou squinted her eyes and smiled even more brightly.

Yang Wenlan stood at the door, watching from afar.

She dared not take another step forward, but simply watched the scene at the dining table in silence.

How long has it been since I've seen this child smile?

Such a young child, and he doesn't even have a home.

Not to mention a decent meal or a kind word.

She wanted to adopt him, but she didn't even have the means to do so.

After dinner, the dishes and chopsticks on the table were cleaned up.

Su Qingzhi took a soft towel and gently wiped Zhenzhen's face.

She asked softly.

"Zhenzhen, can you still come and help Auntie take care of your little sister tomorrow? Uncle Chen's hand is injured, so it's not convenient for him to hold the baby lately. Auntie also has a baby in her belly, and her back is always sore, so she can't walk for too long... If no one plays with Zhouzhou, she will cry."

Zhenzhen nodded solemnly without any hesitation.

"I'll take care of my younger sister."

After he finished speaking, he lowered his head, but couldn't help looking up at Zhouzhou again.

Su Qingzhi watched him walk away, turning back every few steps.

He would stop every few steps, slowly turn around, and linger his gaze on her face for a moment.

Su Qingzhi stood there, smiling and waving at him.

Zhenzhen thought to herself: If Mom were still here, would she have smiled and said goodbye to me like this?

Would you also watch him leave with that gentle yet firm gaze?

He lowered his head, his little hands gripping the straps of his schoolbag tightly.

Unfortunately, there are no "what ifs".

"What a poor child."

Su Qingzhi sighed softly.

This child, though young, has already learned to be silent and patient, even hiding his grievances quietly.

She shook her head slightly, straightened her sleeves, and turned to leave, but unexpectedly met Shen Zhiyu's gaze.

What are you looking at?

Su Qingzhi subconsciously raised her hand and touched her cheek.

"Is there a grain of rice on my face?"

Shen Zhiyu didn't answer, but only chuckled softly.

He waved to her.

Su Qingzhi hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward.

She stood in front of him, looked down at him, and a faint smile appeared in her eyes.

Shen Zhiyu grabbed her hand and gently pulled her down to sit on the edge of the bed.

"Zhizhi, I want to adopt Zhenzhen, what do you think?"

Su Qingzhi was taken aback and looked up at him.

She didn't expect him to bring this up at this time.

He paused for a moment, then couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"I was just about to bring this up with you, why did you bring it up first?"

"Did you see right through me?"

She tilted her head to look at him.

"Of course not."

He answered in a very serious manner.

"We understand each other perfectly, we're a match made in heaven."

Her lips twitched, a little amused and exasperated by his sudden display of cheesiness.

But the next second, she couldn't help but reach out and pinch his cheek.

“Zhenzhen has suffered so much; he lost both his parents. Today, I went to the kitchen and saw another child taking his candy, but he didn’t say a word.”

"The child huddled in the corner, still clutching the candy wrapper in his hand, not uttering a sound, as if he was already used to this treatment."

"Having known him for so long, I can tell that he is a man of few words, but he is sensible and polite to the point of being heartbreaking. Every time I give him something, he always says 'thank you' first, even if it's just an apple, he holds it carefully as if he's afraid of damaging it."

"I like him."

She added softly.

"It's not just sympathy, it's genuine affection for this child."

Shen Zhiyu's voice deepened, and a hint of pain flashed across his brows.

"His dad was in the same company as me. He was really fierce during that mission."

"The enemy situation was complex, and we were ambushed. During the retreat, he volunteered to stay behind to cover the rear, just to cover everyone's escape."

"But there were too many enemies... He was surrounded, all alone, and he held out for nearly twenty minutes, fighting until the very last moment."

"When we found him, he was lying in a pool of blood, with no part of his body intact."

"Seven ribs were broken, and his head was smashed and deformed... He was beaten to death."

He spoke very calmly, but his voice gradually tightened.

"I personally collected his body."

Shen Zhiyu's fingers curled slightly.

"After taking one last look at him, I vowed to take good care of his son."

"Zhizhi, I can't abandon this child."

"good."

She nodded.

"Achuan, let's adopt him. Zhouzhou will have a big brother from now on."

He thought she would hesitate, after all, this was no small matter.

Unexpectedly, she answered so readily, without the slightest hesitation.

He gazed at her, his eyes gradually warming.

"Wife, you are so good."

She glared at him, both amused and exasperated.

"Wow, are you being all sweet-talking today? Why are you being so sweet?"

"It can be even sweeter."

He squinted and slowly moved his head closer to her.

She rolled her eyes at him, annoyed, and pinched the back of his hand.

"Stop it! Zhouzhou is still here! The child is watching, what kind of behavior is this!"

He glanced at his little girl sitting on the small chair, then quickly raised a hand and deftly covered her eyes.

Then he quickly kissed Su Qingzhi on the lips.
