Don't let this family drag down your life.
Otherwise, I would also become destitute.
Just as her thoughts were racing, she suddenly heard a soft footstep outside the door.
Shen Cunpu returned, looking travel-worn.
He saw that Liu Yuelan was already waiting in the courtyard, so he nodded without hesitation.
"They're here."
Without pausing, he walked straight towards the kitchen, taking off his gloves as he asked Su Qingzhi, "Is there anything I can help with today?"
After saying that, he started washing rice and preparing vegetables, and together they prepared dinner.
Liu Yuelan was stunned for a moment, her eyes filled with surprise.
She blinked, trying to process what she had just witnessed.
Was that the figure walking past Shen's eldest brother, who was always sickly and pale?
How could this be...?
Just as she was in a daze, Shen Zhiyu jogged up to her, his face full of smiles, and he was holding a few plums in his hand.
He carefully handed the ripe fruit to Liu Yuelan, speaking in a flattering tone.
"Yuelan, I specially picked this fruit at the market this morning. It's especially sweet. You should try it."
Liu Yuelan casually took a plum, took a small bite, and found it to be sweet and sour, instantly filling her with a sense of satisfaction.
Yes, no matter how handsome a man is, it's all for naught.
If you can't even fill your stomach, you're just an empty shell.
In comparison, Shen Zhiyu, though not outstanding, was still reasonably good-looking, and he also had a stable job.
He's much better than that guy with the muddy face.
A dozen minutes later, the aroma in the room grew stronger, and dishes were served one after another.
Liu Yuelan couldn't help but swallow as she smelled the tempting aroma of the food on the table.
The aroma of these dishes alone was enough to whet her appetite!
Although she was the village chief's daughter, her living conditions were quite good.
But she vividly remembers never having eaten such a meticulously prepared meal at home.
"Time to eat."
Su Qingzhi called out softly.
The people took their seats one after another.
Just as Liu Yuelan was getting excited and preparing to pick up her chopsticks, Shen Zhiyu suddenly frowned as he stared at the dishes on the table.
He put down his chopsticks and turned to Su Qingzhi with a somewhat displeased tone.
"Sister-in-law, Yuelan doesn't like spicy food, so why did you make so much spicy food? Could you please be more mindful of this in the future?"
Su Qingzhi smiled slightly.
She reached out and gently tapped the plate of bright green bok choy with her chopsticks.
"This dish was made for you. I used less oil and no chili, so it's perfect for you."
After saying that, she naturally looked at Liu Yuelan sitting opposite her.
Liu Yuelan picked up the bowl and said softly, "It's okay, I can try some spicy dishes. I can get used to the taste gradually."
The scene looked harmonious.
However, this was the first time Su Qingzhi had truly met Liu Yuelan in person.
Although she is now wearing makeup and dressed appropriately, she does have a certain air about her.
But Su Qingzhi knew very well what was going on.
This woman is no ordinary person.
According to what she had heard, Liu Yuelan was a cunning and scheming person who was not one to behave himself.
He likes to stir up trouble at the drop of a hat, and scheming against others behind their backs has become a habit.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was relatively harmonious at the moment, with everyone eating their own food, but Liu Yuelan's hand never stopped picking up food.
She ate with great gusto, her lips glistening with oil, her chopsticks moving back and forth, tasting almost every dish.
Strangely, that plate of bok choy was never touched the entire time.
This made Su Qingzhi pause slightly.
She glanced down at the plate of green vegetables on the table, her expression pausing slightly.
She then put down her chopsticks and looked at Liu Yuelan with a smile.
"Oh, Yuelan."
She spoke slowly and deliberately, a seemingly kind smile on her lips.
"It's certainly a joyous occasion that you've married into the Shen family. But, Yuelan, while it's your good fortune to marry into this family, there's something... you really don't know at all, do you?"
As soon as he finished speaking, his expression changed drastically.
She was carrying a bowl of freshly heated soup out of the kitchen and sitting down, but hadn't had a chance to pick up her chopsticks yet.
Upon hearing this, he immediately raised his head and glared fiercely at Su Qingzhi with a pair of warning eyes.
"Just eat your food properly," he scolded coldly in a low voice. "Stop talking so much nonsense! Mind your own business and shut up!"
However, Su Qingzhi remained smiling, showing no fear on her face.
She sneered inwardly, afraid that she would bring up the topic.
Because of this, the money didn't come from the Shen family at all.
Upon hearing Su Qingzhi's words, Liu Yuelan raised her eyes, a hint of doubt in them.
"What?"
What's the story behind that bride price?
Her expression suggested she was listening attentively.
But several thoughts had already been swirling in my mind.
If it was money that Shen Zhiyu earned through her own work, she would never accept it!
It would be perfectly reasonable for her to ask her mother-in-law to give her the money!
Sure enough, Su Qingzhi caught the momentary wavering on Liu Yuelan's face and immediately pressed her advantage.
"To be honest, that two thousand yuan dowry wasn't taken by your husband, nor by the Shen family. It was money from our Su family to help the Shen family out!"
She paused, her smile undiminished, but spoke slowly and deliberately.
"In other words, what you call betrothal gifts are actually just money that was lent out and is now being taken back as wedding gifts."
She lowered her head, took a sip of soup, and then added another cut.
"After I married into the family, my mother-in-law didn't give me a single penny. And yet, it was my own family; I brought my own dowry!"
