She sobbed and threw herself into her mother's arms, her voice broken and intermittent.
"I shouldn't have married into the Shen family in the first place. I can't live like this anymore, I really can't take it anymore!"
Her sobs were tinged with despair.
Liu Yuelan cried so hard she could barely breathe, tears streaming down her face like beads from a broken string.
He was sobbing and gasping for breath.
She choked back tears as she said, "My mother-in-law is simply inhuman. She's so stingy that she'll even scrape the cracks in the floorboards. She has no skills whatsoever; she can't cook, she can't entertain guests, and all she does all day is point fingers and curse. But she's also an expert at bullying people. She'll seize on the smallest mistake I make and start a huge fight. We have a small argument every three days and a big fight every five days. My life is getting more and more suffocating every day!"
"I must have been out of my mind and blinded by greed to agree to marry Shen Zhiyu!"
She became more and more upset as she spoke, her hands tightly gripping the hem of her clothes.
“Shen Zhiyu is as spineless as a lump of mud, without any backbone. He doesn’t even dare to breathe loudly at home. When I’m wronged, he doesn’t dare to say a word in my defense. When my mother-in-law scolds me, he just lowers his head and eats; when I cry to him, he finds me annoying and says I’m making trouble for no reason. What’s the point of marrying a man like that?”
"Alright, alright, stop talking, stop talking."
Chen Chunxiang's heart ached when she saw her daughter like this.
"Which family isn't like this? Which mother-in-law and daughter-in-law don't have some friction? You're a new bride who just entered the family. Who isn't living under the thumb of their mother-in-law? It's normal, really, Lanyin, don't overthink it."
"But life goes on. It's not like children playing house, where you can't just yell 'I'm not playing anymore' if you're unhappy today, and say 'I'm not getting married' if things don't go your way tomorrow?"
Chen Chunxiang sighed and earnestly advised him.
"You've only been married a few days! You've only just entered the Shen family, and you haven't even gotten used to the daily grind yet. You're already saying you regret it all the time. You have a long life ahead of you. Are you going to say 'I regret it' every time something goes wrong? How can we live like this?"
"That's just how life is for us women."
She gently patted her daughter's back.
"You have to marry whoever you choose, that's fate and responsibility. Now that you've entered the Shen family and put on this wedding dress, you have to settle down and live a good life. What's the use of crying now? Even if you cry all your tears, you still have to eat, work, and endure your grievances. Crying won't solve anything."
She paused, looked around, and seeing that no one was around, lowered her voice.
"Bear with it for two years, don't rush into a head-on confrontation. Once you have a son, things will be different. You'll have a child, you'll be more established, and your words will carry weight. At that time, Shen Zhiyu won't dare to treat you like that, and your mother-in-law will have to think twice before trying to control you."
"Go back first, don't argue with her. The more you talk back, the more she'll think you don't know the rules, and the more she'll punish you."
Chen Chunxiang gripped her daughter's hand tightly, her tone laced with a hint of fierceness.
"How many more years can that shrewish old woman live? When she kicks the bucket one day, won't you be the one in charge of this family? What are you trying to achieve by fighting for this momentary pride? It's not worth it."
Chen Chunxiang spoke at length, earnestly and patiently.
His words were all for his daughter's sake.
Finally, Liu Yuelan gradually stopped crying and raised her head, sobbing.
The mother and daughter sat under the eaves for a while, neither of them speaking again.
A gentle breeze rustled through the willow trees.
After a long while, Liu Yuelan lowered her head, stood up sullenly, and walked step by step toward the Shen family's residence.
She walked into the courtyard with a stern face and heavy steps.
As soon as I stood still, I saw Su Chenwei come out of the kitchen.
The golden-brown potstickers have a crispy, fragrant exterior and are steaming hot.
Several hard-boiled eggs, once peeled, were as white as jade.
There was also a big pot of fragrant red bean porridge, cooked until thick and smooth.
Liu Yuelan couldn't help but swallow, her throat moved, and her stomach rumbled.
Her eyes were fixed on the lavish breakfast on the table, and she secretly looked forward to it.
Su Chenwei could look up at her, even if it was just to say, "Sister-in-law, come and eat with us."
To her utter surprise, Su Chenwei merely glanced at her indifferently before turning around and calling out to Chen and Shen Xingxing.
"Xingxing, dinner is ready, come and eat."
The three of them sat around a small table, chatting and laughing, and began to eat in a lively atmosphere.
Potstickers dipped in sauce, red bean porridge with eggs—they ate until their faces were glistening with oil.
Liu Yuelan froze on the spot, her feet seemingly nailed to the spot, unable to move.
My face felt a burning sensation, then turned deathly pale in an instant, as if I had been slapped in public.
She clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms.
The scene from yesterday morning immediately popped into my mind.
That bowl of corn porridge was so thin it was like water, and there were grains of sand at the bottom. She felt like vomiting after just one sip.
The mother-in-law said coldly, "New daughter-in-law, don't be so picky. You should be grateful that you have something to eat."
Shen Zhiyu sat to the side, not saying a word, and ate his rice with his head down.
She really didn't want to eat that kind of pig swill anymore, nor did she want to suffer that kind of humiliation anymore.
But today, despite the delicious food, she couldn't even get a single bite.
She gritted her teeth, walked over, and lowered her head.
"Sister-in-law."
Su Chenwei merely glanced at her and nodded slightly.
She lowered her head and continued to slowly drink her porridge.
Now, Liu Yuelan was not only embarrassed to the point of wanting to disappear, but also felt a surge of intense hatred in her heart.
I've tolerated her time and time again, so why does she treat me like I don't exist?
What's with the pretense of being high and mighty?
