Chapter 13
It seems like they asked some strange question.
Kurt didn't answer for a long time.
I waited in vain for an answer, and sighed in boredom.
“Never mind,” I said, “...Let’s leave it at that.”
Then he left him there and turned away.
However, after taking a few steps, I felt something like a shadow sticking to my back.
I turned around.
Kurt stopped in his tracks.
"...Do you want to come with me?" I asked.
He kept his eyes down and didn't answer.
This has always been the case for the youngest child in the family, for a long time.
Standing like a ghost beside the crowd, neither speaking nor making requests, just standing there blankly, when asked "Want to play together?", she simply raised a pair of emotionless eyes.
It's hard to understand what he's thinking.
...
In the end, we took Kurt to relive his childhood once again.
When children are young, the difference in age is very obvious. Even if they are only a few years older, the difference in height can be huge.
Because Killua was still young, Killua and I would take turns pushing him around, but because he didn't like to laugh, Killua would usually just touch the rope a few times and then run away.
He was busy playing with his other younger brothers.
Then I would stay by the swing, presumptuously fearing that Kurt would fall off, and swing with him.
"What's so fun about that thing!" Killua would yell, "Come over here!... Ouch, Alluka shot me again, I'm going to die!"
"Your pretend play is so childish..."
"What! What did you say? I can't hear you!"
"I said—your shoulders are showing! I told you not to wear white, you idiot! Alluka, Killua's in that tree!"
...
At this moment, Kurt would silently tug at my collar.
"Oh, sorry," I realized then, "you forgot to keep swinging, didn't you?"
I tiptoed back: "Sit still, now, let's start again—"
Old, vine-covered swings are particularly prone to losing their balance when they sway.
That wooden board, which seemed big enough to fit three people in my childhood, has somehow become incredibly small.
Now, I'm the only one who can sit down.
“It’s amazing,” Kurt said, standing behind me instead of pushing the swing as I listened to the wind in my ears. “It hasn’t broken or gathered dust after being unused for so long.”
“Before,” Kurt said, “the housekeeper asked if we wanted to tear this place down.”
"And then?" I asked.
“Killua doesn’t agree,” Kurt said.
"Doesn't he dislike playing this game?" I asked again.
Kurt pursed his lips.
“My second brother also said,” his voice turned colder, wooden and mechanical, when he mentioned his other brother, “it’s better not to dismantle it, so it can be left for my eldest brother’s child to use.”
I:"……"
I always feel like Miji's loose tongue is implying something.
Sure enough, when I saw him earlier, I should have pulled him off the table and given him a beating.
I thought to myself, annoyed.
"And you?" I asked, "What did you say?"
Kurt did not answer.
The swing swayed back and forth, sunlight flashed past my eyes, then reappeared, flashed past, then reappeared.
“I didn’t say anything.” Finally, he said, “My second brother and Killua are fighting again, and Mom told me to go find a doctor.”
"Has it come in handy?"
"Hmm." His voice sounded calm, as if nothing was amiss. "My brother stabbed Mom as well, and then ran away."
I could almost picture the chaos at the Zoldyck family's place, and I couldn't help but laugh.
Just then, the maid's voice rang out from afar.
“Young Master Kurt, Miss Lei,” she said, standing on the veranda, her voice carrying clearly through the [Nian], “it’s time for dinner. You may proceed to the dining room.”
Has it come to this point already?
I jumped off the swing, leaving only the plank and ropes swaying in mid-air.
"Is Illumi back?" I asked.
"Not yet," she said.
“Then I won’t go,” I said decisively. “Please tell Madam and Master that I’m not feeling well.”
The maid looked stunned. I walked past her and strode towards the door.
But Kurt stopped me.
“Sister,” he said, “Mom wants to see you.”
