Chapter 71 Border Crisis

Lu Zhaozhao stared wide-eyed at Cheng Sangji in disbelief.

In the distance, a figure sped toward the encampment.

"Who goes there?" the soldier on duty shouted.

The man did not answer. He fell heavily to the ground, covered in wounds, clutching something tightly in his hand, muttering, "I want to see Lord Lord."

A guard recognized him as a general on the eastern front and immediately ran to the palace guard's tent to inform him.

The commotion attracted a lot of attention, and the noise from the roadside gradually grew louder.

Cheng Sangji released Lu Zhaozhao and looked in the direction from which the commotion came.

Lu Zhaozhao glanced at his calm and composed demeanor, her mind racing for a moment. She took a step forward, grabbed his sleeve, and asked, "You made your move?"

Cheng Sangji smiled faintly, brushed her hair with his other hand, and whispered, "You just need to pretend to be deaf and dumb until the end."

After saying that, he was about to leave. Before leaving, he turned his head and said, "The Palace Guardian is about to leave. He will not take the people of the Eight Clans with him, but it is hard to say what will happen to the others."

"You want me to stay?" Lu Zhaozhao asked, watching his retreating figure.

“This is the best choice,” Cheng Sangji said.

Cheng Sangji left, leaving Lu Zhaozhao alone on the platform. At that moment, she felt as if she had fallen into an ice cellar.

What choice is the right one?

Lu Zhaozhao closed her eyes. Snow started falling again on the northern front. Snowflakes were blown by the wind and landed on her cheeks. Lu Zhaozhao felt a bone-chilling cold on her body and mind.

Amidst the distant wind and snow, a cacophony of sounds drifted from the camp, foreshadowing the impending upheaval.

"According to reports from the front lines, the fighting has suddenly intensified at the border between the east and west. In addition, the northern front has been quiet these days, so it seems that the people from the northern region have quietly moved there. At present, all the human race's strongmen have come out, and the Demon Lord and the Demon King are only barely holding on. But the change happened half a month ago. The Demon Lord went out of the border alone to hunt down a person and has not returned yet. This message should be a request for the Palace Guard to provide support."

Changyu Lanshan propped his head up, gazing listlessly into the distance, occasionally popping a grape into his mouth.

Now, Lu Zhaozhao and Changyu Lanshan are no longer at odds. After he kindly helped her last time, and after observing him for a while, Lu Zhaozhao realized that this young master Lu Wu was cold on the outside but warm on the inside, and had a sharp tongue but a soft heart. In just a short time, she had built a good relationship with him.

"Where did you get these grapes?" Lu Zhaozhao asked.

"It was sent from Luwu, you should try it, it's sweet." Changyu Lanshan still looked lazy.

Lu Zhaozhao brushed away his hand offering grapes and continued, "This is the northern front, right in the middle of war. Why would Lu Wu specially send you grapes?"

"So what?" He shifted his posture and spoke slowly, "Isn't this battle something the Demon Lord took over? Let him fight it himself, what does it have to do with us?"

Lu Zhaozhao frowned, sensing that something was wrong.

Putting aside the others, Changyu Lanshan came here to surpass his brother, so how could he suddenly become so lazy?

The only possibility is that Lu Wu's men said something to him...

"I advise you not to act rashly." Changyu Lanshan saw her furrowed brows and knew she had guessed something again. He said casually, "As long as we stay here quietly, nothing will happen. But if you try to stand out and do something outrageous, then no one can protect you."

As he finished speaking, his eyes gradually turned cold. Lu Zhaozhao looked at him, and he continued, "I know the Palace Guard has been looking for you, but I advise you not to go to the east. It's not a safe place."

Lu Zhaozhao chuckled and teased, "If you don't go, how can you make a name for yourself? Fortune favors the bold. Haven't you always wanted to make something of yourself?"

"Whatever you do, however you do it, you have to stand on the right side. Otherwise, even if you do something great, you won't be able to save your life." Changyu Lanshan stared into her eyes, practically stating his words openly.

Lu Zhaozhao nodded, indicating that she understood, and said no more. Changyu Lanshan knew that she was never one to stay still, so he added with concern, "You must remember, don't leave here."

"Okay, okay, eat your grapes." Lu Zhaozhao peeled a grape and stuffed it into his hand. Changyu Lanshan hesitated for a moment, then took the grape without saying anything more.

That night, all was quiet.

The palace guards have reorganized their troops and will be heading to the eastern and western borders tonight.

Torches illuminated the sky above the northern route. Cheng Sangji stood on the high platform with his back to the light, his face obscured by shadows, making it impossible to see his expression.

Standing beside him were members of the other eight clans.

"This battle is crucial in determining the outcome."

“Father wrote that everything in the western region is arranged, and we are just waiting for the right moment to make our move,” Nan Rongrui said excitedly, standing beside him.

"Where is Guan Nan? Where is she?" Changyu Lanshan looked around and, not seeing Lu Zhaozhao in the farewell party, asked.

"She went to the snow mountain. She said all the superiors in charge had left, and she wanted to go up and take a look. I don't know what's up there that she's remembered for so long," Nan Rongrui said irritably.

Changyu Lanshan nodded, stretched, and prepared to leave.

"Where are you going?" Huai Jiang asked, puzzled.

"I'm quite curious about what's up in the snow mountain," Changyu Lanshan said, secretly thinking that he didn't really want to be with them, but he made it seem like he agreed with Changyu Languan's plan to participate.

"Changyu Lanshan, aren't you getting a little too close to Guan Nan? Don't you dare reveal our plans." Nan Rongrui sized him up, her meaning ambiguous.

Changyu Lanshan gave her a big laugh and said cheerfully, "You should save those words for your brother."

After saying that, he winked at Cheng Sangji, but Cheng Sangji still had the same expression. He pursed his lips in boredom and turned to leave.

“This guy…” Nan Rongrui stomped her foot angrily, turned to look at Cheng Sangji, and wanted to complain to him.

But Cheng Sangji's gaze did not fall on any of them, even though an argument had just taken place in front of them.

His gaze fell directly on a spot in the marching group.

"What are you looking at?" Qiehe stepped forward and stood beside him. Following his gaze, he saw only an ordinary soldier with an unremarkable face that was easily forgotten.

“He had not been seen in the army before,” Cheng Sangji said with certainty.

Qie He was somewhat surprised. He looked at Cheng Sangji and then at the soldier, and said uncertainly, "There are so many faces in the army, you can't possibly remember every single one..."

“I do remember them all.” Cheng Sangji interrupted him, then choked for a moment and said, “It’s possible that the Palace Guardian was trained in secret, so naturally he hasn’t seen them.”

"Perhaps." Cheng Sangji squinted, his gaze fixed intently on the soldier.

Qiehe assumed he was being overly cautious and patted him on the shoulder to comfort him.
