After dinner, the Ye family started to clear the table. The three sisters-in-law were carrying their bowls and chopsticks to go to the kitchen to wash the dishes when they heard a quarrel next door.
"Why is there a quarrel in Qinggang's family again?" Mrs. Ye San walked to the shoji curiously and listened to the noise over there.
After listening for a long time, she went into the kitchen with the plate in her hand.
"Are the couple next door quarreling again?" Mrs. Ye asked while scooping hot water from the pot.
Sister-in-law Ye said, "This time it wasn't just a quarrel. Mrs. Lu has already packed up her things and returned to her parents' home!"
"You're going back to your parents' home so late?" Mrs. Ye looked at the sky outside. "Isn't the road safe?"
Mrs. Ye put down the dishes in her hands, wiped them on her apron and said, "I'll go out and take a look."
After she said that, she chased after him and soon saw Mrs. Lu wiping her tears while carrying her bag at the entrance of a small path.
"Mother Yunhu, where are you going so late?"
When Mrs. Lu saw Mrs. Ye coming out, she quickly wiped away her tears and turned her head away.
"Sister-in-law, you all heard it, right?"
"I just heard you say you wanted to go back to your parents' home." Sister Ye stepped forward and held her, saying, "I remember your parents' home is not in the village, right?
"It's so late, it's so dangerous for you to go back alone!
"Even if we don't run into any bad guys, those wolves, tigers and leopards in the mountains have been cooped up all winter and are all looking forward to eating something fresh!"
After hearing what Mrs. Ye said, Mrs. Lu felt even more uncomfortable.
Even her neighbor, whom she had only been with for half a year, was so concerned about her, but Ye Qinggang, who had been married to her for so many years, didn't worry about her safety at all and didn't even chase her out.
"Sister-in-law, don't worry. I'll stay at a relative's house in the village for one night and then go back to my parents' home tomorrow morning."
After hearing what Mrs. Lu said, Mrs. Ye didn't say anything more. After all, it was the couple's private matter.
"That's fine. Safety comes first." Mrs. Ye had no choice but to say, "Calm down. When a couple lives together, the ladle will inevitably touch the edge of the pot."
Mrs. Lu wiped her tears and said, "Sister-in-law, I can't explain these things at home in a short time..."
Seeing her crying so hard, Mrs. Ye simply said, "Who in the village is your relative? I'll just take you there. Otherwise, I'm worried about you like this."
Mrs. Lu was a little embarrassed to speak, and kept saying, "Thank you, sister-in-law. It's really not necessary. I can walk there in a few steps."
"Okay, go ahead and be careful!" Seeing that the other person was unwilling to talk, Mrs. Ye didn't ask too much. After all, they were just neighbors and they were not that familiar with each other.
After watching Mrs. Ye return home, Mrs. Lu picked up her bag and went straight to Ye Laizi's house, knocking on the door a few times.
She knocked for a long time before someone answered the door.
Ye Laizi's newly married wife, Huang, came to open the door and was obviously stunned when she saw Lu.
"Sister-in-law, I..." Mrs. Lu opened her mouth and called sister-in-law, but before she could say anything, Mrs. Huang covered her mouth with her hand.
"Hush!" Huang turned around in panic, looking inside the house. She then pushed Lu out of the courtyard door and followed her out. After closing the door, she whispered, "Why did you come here so suddenly?"
Mrs. Lu lowered her eyes and said, "Is it not okay for me to come and take a look?"
Huang looked at the bundle in her hand, frowned and asked, "What's going on?"
Mrs. Lu sighed and said, "I had a fight with the child's father. I want to go back to my parents' home, but it's too late. I was wondering if I could stay at your place for the night."
Huang looked embarrassed when she heard this.
If it were any other time, it would be fine, but today Ye Laizi had just suffered a great loss and after coming back he kept cursing people, so she didn't dare to provoke him.
And then, she lowered her voice and asked, "Why do you want to go back to your mother's home? Where is there any mother's home to go back to nowadays?"
Huang and Lu were originally sisters-in-law.
Huang married Lu's elder brother Lu Bo and gave birth to a pair of children.
Life was going well at home, but unfortunately, Lu Bo passed away a few years ago.
After that, Huang lived with her parents-in-law with her two children.
However, in the past two years, her parents-in-law passed away one after another. Huang, a widow with two children, could not make ends meet. She had no choice but to marry Ye Laizi through an arranged marriage.
She agreed to the marriage at that time, also considering that Mrs. Lu was in Rongxi Village and might be able to help take care of the two children.
But after she got married, she found out that Ye Qinggang's parents were both sick and unable to get up. Mrs. Lu had two children of her own and was so busy that she could hardly take care of her own family, so how could she help her?
When Huang heard Mrs. Lu say that she wanted to go back to her parents' home, she thought to herself, the Lu family now has nothing except three adobe houses that are almost collapsing. How can there be any parents' home to go back to?
When Mrs. Lu heard this, she burst into tears.
"If my parents and brother were still alive, Ye Qinggang wouldn't dare to bully me like this..."
After hearing this, Huang felt very uncomfortable.
“Who says it’s not…”
If her parents-in-law and husband were here, she wouldn't have to live this kind of life with her two children, where they were constantly scolded and beaten.
Perhaps it was Lu's words that brought back memories of Huang's time at the Lu family. In the end, she couldn't bring herself to chase Lu away. She said softly, "Don't say a word. I'll take you in. You can sleep in the east wing with the two children tonight, and leave early in the morning."
After hearing this, Mrs. Lu suddenly remembered and said, "Ye Laizi is angry again? Didn't Xiaofei tell me a few days ago that the clan leader sent people to teach Ye Laizi a lesson? How could he dare to..."
“After the chief sent people here, he really didn’t beat us again.
"But he was bitten by Old Ye's dog today, and he's been throwing a tantrum since he got home. You'd better be quiet and don't provoke him."
