Chapter 12
The wolves were all dead, and when they were cleaning up the battlefield, the guards from the Pastor's Garden in the distance hurried over.
Sui Yu quickly stood up and ran over. There was wolf blood mixed with human blood on her body, and the muscles on her face were shaking uncontrollably, looking extremely terrifying.
The guard raised his spear and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Sir, do you have any medicine? My father and my cousin were bitten by wolves. We killed two wolves. Please give me some medicine. My father's legs are bleeding and the bleeding won't stop."
"Do you have any medicine?" the other person asked his companion.
"I brought some." Another man took out a thumb-sized ceramic vase and handed it to him, asking, "Did you really kill two wolves?"
"Yeah, yeah." Sui Yu nodded desperately. She snatched the medicine bottle from the guard's hand, turned around and ran away.
Sui Hu lay on the ground, unable to move. The blood from his legs soaked the soil beneath the grass roots. The bandage tied above his knees was ineffective. He saw Sui Yu bringing medicine and stopped her, saying, "Give it to Wen An, don't waste it on me. I can't walk, and stopping the bleeding will be useless."
"I don't need it, give it to Third Uncle." Sui Wen'an immediately refused, "Don't worry, Third Uncle, I'll carry it to the Western Regions for you."
Sui Yu ignored everyone. She pulled out the cork of the bottle and sprinkled the medicine on the bleeding wound with trembling hands. Facing the hideous wound, the hot smell of blood hit her face, and the bright red flesh contracted and trembled. She choked her throat and sprinkled the medicine all over the wound, then turned her head and vomited.
Sui Hu's face was distorted with pain and veins popped out on his forehead.
The powder that was sprinkled was quickly soaked with blood. Sui Yu gritted his teeth, suppressed the urge to vomit, and continued to sprinkle the powder.
"Stop torturing me." Sui Hu burst into tears in pain. He reached out to hug his son, who was lying on him, and said in despair, "What will you do if I die? Ah? Why can't your aunt bear to take you away?"
"Uncle San, please don't say unlucky things. It will be fine once the bleeding stops." Sui Wen'an covered his face. He didn't feel this bad even when his father died.
After a bottle of medicine was finished, Sui Yu sat beside Sui Hu's legs and stared at his wound. Muffled cries floated over the grassland, and the night darkened, completely losing the peace before falling asleep.
The dead bodies of the humans and wolves were dragged away. The guards came over. Sui Yu looked up and said, "They're still alive."
The guard took a quick look, but it was pitch black and he couldn't see anything. He could only smell a strong smell of blood.
"Wenan, I want to be alone with Sui Yu and Liang Ge'er for a while." Sui Hu felt that he didn't have much time left.
"Okay, I'll just walk around here. Sister Yu, call me if you need anything." Sui Wen'an left tactfully.
"Sit up." Sui Hu said.
Sui Yu moved over and said hoarsely, "The bleeding is almost stopping."
"It's no use. My body is getting cold." Sui Hu covered his son's ears, stared at her and asked, "What kind of monster are you? You are not my daughter."
Just as the moon came out, Sui Hu saw genuine confusion on Sui Yu's face. For a moment he thought he had guessed wrong, and the next moment, he saw helplessness on her face.
Sui Yu touched his hand, his fingers were cold, without any warmth. He was right, he couldn't bear it any longer.
"I'm not a spirit. This body belongs to your daughter, not her soul." Sui Yu confessed honestly, "I came from over two thousand years in the future. I was walking down the street when someone hit me with a club. I'm probably dead. I don't know how I got transported to over two thousand years ago and reborn in your daughter's body. When I woke up, she had already hanged herself, and so had your aunt."
Sui Hu was confused, not knowing how to react. It took him a while to digest every word she said. He suddenly perked up, forgetting the pain in his body, and continued to ask, "You didn't lie to me?"
"You're about to die, why would I lie to you?"
"That's right." This was credible. Sui Hu then asked, "What will the future be like?"
"Hmm..." Sui Yu was thinking about what to say. She hadn't thought about her past life for a long time, and any comparison would make her unable to live.
"The dynasty I lived in had no emperor, but sound laws. Women could go to school, engage in business, and hold official positions. Men could only marry one wife, and if they couldn't make it, they could divorce and remarry... Food, clothing, housing, transportation, and everything else were extremely convenient. Furthermore, in my dynasty, you could fly from Yu County to the Western Regions in the morning and arrive at noon." Sui Yu sighed heavily and said, "Look how unlucky I am. I've been on the road with you for almost four months, stuck in a mountain den, and even encountered a nighttime wolf attack."
"Are you serious?"
“I can’t make it up.”
"That's right." After listening to her, Sui Hu found it hard to imagine what she was talking about. He couldn't imagine that scene, let alone accept it.
"Then you are indeed unlucky. I can't stand this exile," he said.
Sui Yu leaned over to look at his legs and said happily, "The bleeding has stopped."
"You're a good girl. You're really worried about me." He told him the secret, still hoping that he would survive. Sui Hu slowly loosened his hand, rubbed his son's ears, and leaned in closer to say, "Your aunt came to pick me up. She told me not to be afraid of your sister. She saw that you were scared, so she sent your sister back to accompany you."
Sui Liang looked up anxiously, but saw nothing.
"I'm being shameless this time. I'm entrusting Liang'er to you. I've taken care of you like your own daughter along the way and never treated you unfairly. Please take him to the Western Regions. It doesn't matter if he's hungry or a dog, just let him grow up." Sui Hu wiped his tears, sighed, and said to his son, "She is your biological sister. When Daddy leaves, you must follow her. Don't be afraid of her anymore."
"Don't give it to Sui Wen'an?" In order to reassure him, Sui Yu hugged Sui Liang, and this time he did not struggle.
"If I don't give it to him, he won't be able to protect himself. I don't trust him either. He is indecisive and lacks ruthlessness. In this respect, he is not as good as you." Sui Hu looked up at the sky. The night turned blue and the day was about to dawn. He wondered if he could still see the sunrise.
"After I die, he'll feel guilty about you. When he gets to the Western Regions, if he has the energy to do so, he'll ask someone to find you a decent family. If the man you marry is an ordinary person without power or influence, you'll have to sever all ties with the boss's family, and have no contact with Sui Hui or Sui Ling." Sui Hu whispered. His mouth felt dry, and he swallowed hard before continuing, "Hide the exiled criminals and cut off all contact with our people. There will be more people like tonight who act crazy and mad in the future."
Seeing Sui Yu remained silent, he added, "Our family is ruined because of them. Don't let your greed blind you. If it weren't for... if it weren't for my request to him, I would have wished the culprit dead along the way... If I could live, who would want to die? I'm living a good life."
"You don't have the clan relationship I know of." Sui Yu said.
Sui Hu sneered, a nephew can't be compared to a biological son.
"I think the real culprit is the court, the law, and me..." With Sui Liang around, Sui Yu glossed over the matter vaguely, "In an era with sound laws, even if a criminal committed murder, arson, or slaughtered an entire family, they wouldn't be sentenced to death along with their entire clan. Those who were convicted would be imprisoned, and their property would be confiscated. Only the person involved would be sentenced, and their family members wouldn't be implicated."
"That's not enough to appease the public anger." Sui Hu couldn't understand.
"Yes, you also said it was to appease public anger. The court's exile of the three clans is precisely to appease public anger. We are innocent, but the law has forced us to be guilty." Sui Yu had been brooding over this question all the way. She could understand others blaming Sui Wen'an and his siblings, and she didn't mind hitting or pushing them. But in her opinion, they didn't deserve the death penalty.
"Sui Jiushan deserved death for his crimes, but the law's exile of the three clans was wrong. We should hate the imperial court the most. However, no one in the imperial court can resist, so we can only pour our hatred on Sui Wen'an and his two siblings, wishing to kill them immediately. But in my... dynasty with sound laws, they deliberately took lives like this tonight. They have committed a crime, and they are also evil people." Sui Yu was full of confusion. She lowered her head and asked, "Do you understand what I mean?"
"I don't understand. I think it's best if you do what I say. Stay away from everyone. I'll use it if I can." Sui Hu paused and added, "Your dynasty was pretty good."
Sui Yu nodded, "I'll consider it."
Sui Liang listened to their conversation back and forth, his mind becoming drowsy. He felt that the two men were quite peaceful, so he relaxed. As soon as he relaxed, he dozed off with his head nodding off.
Sui Hu turned his head and stared at him without saying a word for a long time. When he fell asleep, he cursed softly, "Fool, your father is going to die."
Sui Yu couldn't hold back her tears. They had been father and daughter for nearly four months. She had rejected him at first, but later she willingly called him dad. She couldn't bear to see him die.
"I entrust him to you." Sui Hu said again.
"Well, I have a bite to eat, and he has a bite to eat." Sui Yu tilted her head and wiped her tears.
Sui Hu felt relieved. There was a bright spot in the sky. He had learned a lot tonight, so he didn't have to watch the sunrise.
"Call your cousin over," he said.
"If you hadn't tried so hard to protect Sui Hui, you wouldn't have been bitten by the wolf." Sui Yu couldn't help but say. No matter how harsh his words were, his actions couldn't deceive people.
Sui Hu laughed, "I thought you were a spirit, so you must have some magical powers."
Sui Wen'an and his two siblings came over and saw that his face was pale but he had a smile on his face, which made them feel very uneasy.
"Wen'an, I entrust Yu Jie'er to you. Please find a way for her to live a clean life." Sui Hu held his nephew's hand and pleaded.
"Don't worry, Third Uncle. Sister Yu is my biological sister from now on, and Brother Liang is also my biological brother." Sui Wen'an burst into tears. For the first time, he hated his father. "Third Uncle, my father and I have let you down."
Sui Hu looked over the person lying on him and winked at Sui Yu. Done.
After letting go of his worries, Sui Hu suddenly felt that he had lost a lot of strength. His thoughts were clear one moment, but the next moment his speech became slurred and his vision became cloudy and distracted.
Sui Yu woke Sui Liang up, and the brother and sister knelt together to see him off.
"Auntie is here to pick up Dad, don't be afraid." She said soothingly.
Sui Liang cried silently, Sui Hu smiled at him, and the last tear slid down the corner of his eye.
Fool, you didn’t even shout when your father was dying... It’s okay to be a fool, as long as you have a life.
The morning glow began to shine in the east, and the mountains immersed in the dark night were covered with rosy glow. The wind and dew became warmer little by little, but they could not warm Sui Hu's body at all. He closed his eyes and lay peacefully on the grass. The smell of blood on his body attracted insects and flies.
Half of the escort officers went to chase those who had escaped during the chaos last night, while the others rested on the spot. No one urged them to hurry up. Sui Yu and his sister Sui Wen'an dug a hole together, digging it as deep as possible.
When the sun was approaching overhead, the four brothers and sisters worked together to pick up Sui Hu, put him in a pit, and buried him on the grassland.
The last handful of soil fell, Sui Yu looked around, she went to the river to get some bluestone and buried it under the soil.
"If I pass by here again in the future, I will come to pay my respects to you," she said softly.
