Chapter 15
Lu Shang was blaming himself for not paying more attention and was just busy sulking with himself. He turned around and went to bed, not caring how hot it was under the quilt in the summer, and hid away.
Jiang Wanning stood up in a daze: "...Husband?" No one answered, and she didn't dare to shout again.
Just as she was wondering if she had said something wrong, she heard a muffled sound coming from under the quilt.
Lu Shang rarely showed a bit of depression: "It has nothing to do with you, it's my fault, just let me be alone for a while."
"Don't go out. When Second Mother and the others come back, they'll definitely order you around again. Just sit inside. There are some books in the cabinet next to you. If you like, read them. If not, you can do something else."
"Aning, wait for me to figure it out."
Jiang Wanning hesitated: "...Okay."
Even though Lu Shang told her to do whatever she wanted, Jiang Wanning just sat back and glanced at the bed from time to time. Seeing that Lu Shang didn't move, she didn't move either.
It was not until Lu Laoer and others came back from outside and there was a commotion in the yard that Lu Shang crawled out from under the quilt.
After just a short while, his head and face were covered in sweat, and his originally pale face now looked a little rosy.
Jiang Wanning stood up immediately and looked at him nodly.
Lu Shang walked up to her, pressed his big hand on the top of her head, and smiled: "Sorry for the long wait."
But after saying this, he refused to explain any further and instead said, "I'll see if I have any spare money later. Tomorrow you and I can go to town and see if there's any hand ointment. I'll buy it for you."
Jiang Wanning was stunned, thinking about the conversation before he became autistic, and suddenly came up with an absurd guess.
But before she could investigate further, Lu Shang had already dragged her out.
Nearing noon, every household in the village started to light their stoves. There were people living on both sides of Lu Laoer's house, and the aroma of food could be smelled through the wall.
Lu Laoer and his men had been busy in the fields all day. As soon as they entered the house, they found a shady place to sit down, drew some cold water from the well, drank a sip, and poured the rest over their heads, feeling refreshed.
Grandma Lu went to the village entrance to chat with someone in the morning. She didn't even need to find a topic, the villagers came up to her on their own.
"How's your Lu Shang?"
Grandma Lu raised her head and said, "It's all healed!"
"How, how come everything is healed? What do you mean by completely healed?" With this cry, all the people at the village entrance gathered around.
Grandma Lu wasn't shy either. She shook her head, looking both happy and boastful: "Thank God, Shang'er has been getting better day by day since that night. Although he's still a little weak, he's much better than before."
"Just yesterday, Shang'er personally stewed a big rooster for us. The dish was so delicious. He even got up early this morning to practice martial arts. He looks so energetic!"
Everyone knew that Grandma Lu cared about Lu Shang. If Lu Shang hadn't really recovered, it was hard to imagine that she would come to the village entrance and sit there with such a happy face.
Grandma Lu spent the entire morning spreading Lu Shang's situation throughout Lujia Village.
Now everyone in the village knows that the sickly Lu family member who had pretended to be dead has recovered!
On her way home alone, she received congratulations from many people, who congratulated her on her eldest grandson's recovery and wished her to become the grandmother of the top scholar as soon as possible.
Grandma Lu didn’t dare to think about whether he would be the top scholar or not. As long as Lu Shang was fine, she would be satisfied.
Thinking of all the congratulations along the way, Grandma Lu felt overjoyed when she saw Lu Shang. Even Jiang Wanning, who was following beside him, liked him more and more the more she looked at him.
Seeing the three of them gathered together again, Wang Cuilian curled her lips. Seeing Ma coming out of the room, she pointedly cursed: "Why isn't the meal ready yet? We've been out here for so long, and we don't even have a hot meal when we get home. Are you trying to starve us to death?"
Ma explained: "That's not true, mother. I was taking care of Shuang'er this morning, and she was crying the whole time..."
"Why are you crying? She's just a little girl. If you don't coax her, she'll naturally behave. Go and cook. There's no point in raising you!"
Wang Cuilian cursed and swore, and Ma's face became more and more ugly.
Lu Xian wanted to speak for his wife, but as soon as he opened his mouth, Wang Cuilian slapped him on the head.
But no matter how fiercely she scolded him, Lu Shang did not miss the glares she kept throwing at Jiang Wanning.
Seeing that she was getting more and more angry, Lu Shang said calmly: "Okay."
His voice was not loud, but it was enough to stun everyone.
Lu Shang said, "I'm at home too, and I'm not doing any work. Second Mother might as well scold me too."
As soon as he opened his mouth, Lu Lao Er followed suit. He threw the ladle of water on the ground with a crisp sound: "Okay, why are you making a fuss? They didn't do it, just do it yourself."
Even without mentioning any names, Wang Cuilian knew who he was talking about.
Wang Cuilian took a deep breath and looked at the people in the yard watching the excitement. No matter how patient she was, she could no longer hold back. Her chest rose and fell more and more. After a long while, she uttered, "Lu Laoer, don't be such a jerk!"
After saying that, she threw down the basket behind her, and the basket full of wild vegetables and mushrooms fell to the ground.
She ran straight to the room and slammed the door. After a while, she heard sobbing sounds from inside the room.
The rest of the group looked at each other in bewilderment. Lu Lao Er frowned and said unhappily, "What a temper."
Wang Cuilian quit her job, but her family couldn't go hungry.
Ma was about to go to the kitchen to cook, but her daughter's crying was heard again in her room. She was in a dilemma. At this time, Lu Shang stood up again and said, "Sister-in-law, go and take care of the child. I will make lunch."
"Ah?" Ma was stunned.
Lu Shang made the decision without much hesitation. He skillfully took Jiang Wanning's hand and turned to run to the kitchen.
Even though he had just made a pot of delicious braised chicken yesterday, the other members of the Lu family still found it difficult to accept him entering the kitchen. As soon as Lu Shang entered, the others followed him.
Lu Shang looked back and was almost frightened by the group of people blocking the door.
Seeing the difficulty on their faces, Lu Shang quickly figured out the crux of the problem. However, he said nothing about it. He just walked to the door, pushed them out, and closed the door.
It might be unthinkable for a man to cook in this place.
But for Lu Shang, since they are a family, nothing is a must. Whatever a woman can do, a man can do too. As for the other people's deep-rooted ideas, he cannot change them, but he will not go along with them either.
After Lu Shang closed the door, he turned around and looked at Jiang Wanning: "Do it simply?"
"Whatever you say, I'll help you." Lu Shang said as he rolled up his sleeves. Then Jiang Wanning washed the vegetables while he lit the fire, and Jiang Wanning steamed the rice while he cooked. The two of them worked together and made three dishes and a soup in just half an hour.
Jiang Wanning had never thought that a couple could cook together. She was so immersed in the novelty that she didn't notice the heat and fatigue at all.
As it turned out, Lu Shang was still a little too weak.
They made a simple lunch and just as they finished eating, Lu Shang lay down again. He rested for most of the day before he managed to regain his energy. He was still listless during dinner.
This made Jiang Wanning very nervous. She paid close attention and treated him even more attentively.
The next morning, if it weren't for the fact that he had to go to town today, Lu Shang would not have wanted to get up at all.
As for the early morning exercise he prescribed for himself—
Jiang Wanning practiced twice in an orderly manner, but she didn't see Lu Shang until she returned to her room.
Until Jiang Wanning woke Lu Shang and asked, "Husband, are you still going to town? The oxcart to town will leave in half an hour."
Lu Shang suddenly sat up with a somersault: "Go!"
