Chapter 7 "Trying to Cover Up the Truth"

The next day, Wen Hemian found a martial arts instructor for Xie Lang.

He was one of her bodyguards, named Changzhu. He originally served by the side of the Prince of Huailing and had fought on the battlefield. He was specially assigned to her after learning that she wanted to stay in the capital.

It's reassuring for our own people to use it.

After finishing the morning lessons, Wen Hemian took Xie Lang to the horse farm in the afternoon and specifically instructed Changzhu: "Don't think that he is His Majesty. Teach him as you normally would."

It should be a long bamboo.

He had always trained in the army and had his own methods. Considering that the young emperor was a beginner, he first had him practice horse stance to test his endurance. Xie Lang was stubborn and refused to give up. Half an hour had passed, and his legs were trembling, but he still persevered until Changzhu called for a stop. Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief. When he got up, he staggered a little, but quickly regained his balance.

Of course, this was just the beginning. After that, some other activities were carried out one after another. After half a day, Xie Lang was obviously quite tired. Wen Hemian chuckled and took a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his forehead.

It's still cold outside, and I'm afraid of catching a cold.

Feeling the other person's gentle touch, Xie Lang blinked uncomfortably and suddenly asked, "Did the Grand Tutor go through this before?"

Since last night, the two of them had suddenly become much closer. Xie Lang was no longer awkward and was even willing to call him Grand Tutor. Wen Hemian was very gratified.

“Not at all.” Wen Hemian’s eyes curved into a smile. “Father pitied my weak health and always believed in gradual progress. At first, he only wanted to help me improve my health, but he has become more shrewd since then.”

In modern times, Wen Hemian was always sick and never experienced a normal life. Unexpectedly, after transmigrating, she discovered that she actually had a talent for martial arts. Since the system didn't interfere, she continued to learn and was able to protect herself at any time.

See, it came in handy last night!

"Therefore, Your Majesty should not be stubborn. If you really can't hold on, tell Changzhu. You must not damage your foundation because of this."

Wen Hemian cherishes her health very much.

Xie Lang pouted: "I wasn't trying to be brave."

He just wanted to become stronger as soon as possible.

Thinking of this, Xie Lang glanced silently at his tutor. The tutor was slender, so he had to be taller and stronger than her.

Wen Hemian nodded: "Alright, give His Majesty an extra bowl of rice tonight."

-

This was the best winter Xie Lang had ever experienced.

Before this, he never believed that anyone could be wholeheartedly good to him, but Wen Hemian did.

Every time he asked, Wen Hemian would just smile calmly and say, "Firstly, as the Grand Tutor, this is my duty. Secondly, the court has suffered from treacherous officials for too long, and I hope to train a wise ruler to clean up the court and restore peace to the world."

To put it bluntly, it's about building a foundation for one's future retirement.

Xie Lang frowned, wondering if he could become a wise ruler.

But seeing that the Grand Tutor insisted on cultivating him in this direction, he could only pretend to be obedient, as a way of repaying her kindness.

The teacher and student each harbored their own ulterior motives.

In the third month of spring, the weather begins to warm up.

Wen Hemian tried every means to meet with several capable court officials to see if he could secure more power for Xie Lang. He couldn't just leave him in the court as a figurehead, all show and no substance.

Ye Zhaoxuan was a shrewd man, like a social terrorist. Before long, he became familiar with several censors and persuaded them to say a few words for Xie Lang in court.

There will never be a shortage of censors in this world; you can't kill them all. They don't have much real power, but they are tough and unyielding, making them people that even Ning Hechu can't control. They keep nagging in front of him all day long, which gives him a headache. So, in the end, he pretended to show Xie Lang some unimportant memorials, which barely managed to stop the rumors.

When Xie Lang received the memorial, he initially read it carefully, but after glancing at it a few times, he tossed it aside.

Xie Lang said sarcastically, "All show and no substance, it's utter nonsense!"

"Not bad, you can use idioms now." Wen Hemian praised her teaching results and calmly sat down on the soft couch. "It's already good that he gave in. If he does it once, he'll do it again. If he backs down this time, we can think of other ways next time."

It's impossible to achieve success overnight.

Xie Lang hummed in agreement: "What has the Grand Tutor been doing lately? Is it that fun outside the palace?"

Wen Hemian saw a faint and shallow longing in his eyes, but it vanished in an instant, like an illusion.

She nodded: "Of course it's fun outside the palace. Would Your Majesty like to go out and have a look?"

Xie Lang hesitated: "Is it alright?"

Wen Heming: "Don't worry, nobody cares about you."

Xie Lang: "..."

Okay, forget you're a puppet.

Realizing that her words might hurt the child's self-esteem, Wen Hemian added, trying to cover up the truth, "It's because nobody cares about us."

"Grand Tutor, there's no need to comfort me." Xie Lang took a deep breath. "Sooner or later, I will make those who look down on me utterly astonished."

Wen Hemian rubbed his fluffy head: "Why do you care so much about them? You are an emperor."

Xie Lang gave a forced smile: "Then could you please ask the Grand Tutor to remove his hand from my head?"

Wen Hemian smiled kindly: "No."

Kids are fun when they're young; they're not fun when they grow up.

Xie Lang was powerless to refute her and could only let her do as she pleased.

After the last incident, Huo Ping seemed to have been convinced by Xie Lang and decided to wholeheartedly assist the new emperor. In the past two days, he and Xie Lang have been discussing how to deal with many people, including those who had bullied him in the past. They were all arrested and imprisoned, an eye for an eye.

However, when he came to report on this matter, he vaguely sensed that the timing of his arrival was not quite right. He stood frozen at the door, looking inside, unsure whether to go in or not.

Xie Lang, with his sharp eyes, cleared his throat and resumed his serious, unsmiling demeanor: "Come in."

Wen Hemian withdrew her hand as if nothing had happened.

Huo Ping, keeping his eyes downcast and seemingly oblivious to his own thoughts, presented a piece of paper: "This is a list of traitors that I have compiled. Please take a look, Your Majesty."

Xie Lang quickly got the hang of it and intended to work with Huo Ping to make the palace their domain. They couldn't interfere in the court, but they needed a place to stand so as not to be overly passive.

"Keep these few, and find an opportunity to rotate the rest out."

After reading the book, Xie Lang also understood the principle that "if the water is too clear, there will be no fish." Rather than eliminating all the hidden agents and having new people planted in, it would be better to select a few unimportant ones to keep under their noses and keep an eye on them.

Huo Ping agreed with the young emperor's approach: "May I ask if Your Majesty needs any people transferred to your side?"

As he said this, his gaze seemed to casually sweep over Wen Hemian. The area around Taiji Hall was still guarded by Wen Hemian's men. Since ancient times, where has there ever been a precedent of an emperor being protected by an outside official?

Wen Hemian stated his position: "Lord Huo, please send people as you see fit. I won't mind."

Xie Lang paused for a moment, then affirmed, "Let's do as the Grand Tutor says."

They found themselves on the same side, unknowingly.

Huo Ping remained unfazed: "Your subject obeys."
