Chapter Sixty-Six: People Under the Eaves

Sun Miao'er gently stroked her palm, the land deed in her arms still warm from being held. A surge of emotions welled up within her. "Manager Hu, could you tell me who entrusted you with this?"

Hu San smiled and said with relief, "That person has been a great benefactor to me. As soon as the letter arrived, I set off immediately without delay."

He took out a letter from his pocket, which was probably about that person's situation. Manager Hu's attitude towards Sun Miao'er was also respectful.

Sun Miao'er's gaze lingered on the letter, which was unsigned, bearing only a maple leaf imprint.

She opened the letter, which contained nothing more than what Manager Hu had said.

The white paper and ink words rushed into her eyes—every stroke had a return stroke. She suddenly woke up, turned around and went into the room, and tumbled over at the head of Grandma Sun's bed.

Finally, the crumpled paper was retrieved from the bottom of the cabinet, and after carefully comparing it with the words on the letter, they were indeed identical.

She dared not believe it, yet she had no choice but to believe it.

When she returned to the courtyard, Hu San saw her looking distraught and asked, "Miss Sun, what's wrong?"

"It's nothing." Sun Miao'er lowered her head, clutching the letter, and murmured, "I know who it was, thanks to Manager Hu for making this trip."

Sun Miao'er stared blankly into space, her fingertips repeatedly stroking the maple leaf rubbing. "By the way, Manager Hu, did you bring your personal seal?"

“Those who do business naturally keep their personal seal with them at all times.” Manager Hu took out his personal seal from his sleeve.

Sun Miao'er unfolded the land deed, which still bore Old Man Sun's name. She handed the deed to Manager Hu, saying, "Manager Hu, please affix your personal seal here."

She almost forgot that, just to be on the safe side, she still needed to prove that the land deed had passed through Manager Hu's hands before it came into her possession.

Manager Hu stamped the seal, and Sun Miao'er dipped her finger in ink and pressed it below.

As this set of rules came to an end, the light in Sun Yuanhu's eyes gradually dimmed, and their final calculations fell through.

Sun Miao'er's move was to prevent the two of them from making up stories and distorting the truth in the future.

After saying goodbye, Manager Hu got into his sedan chair and drove away from Fushui Village.

Sun Miao'er's gaze never left the handwriting.

Who else could own this character?

What she found was none other than the prescription her master had written for her grandmother.

The handwriting on the letter was exactly the same as that on the prescription.

The letter was still unsigned, marked only with a maple leaf imprint, just like the one on the envelope.

What exactly is the secret code behind this maple leaf rubbing?

Why has she never met her master, even though she's known him for so long?

Who exactly is the master? Even someone like Manager Hu, who can turn the tide in Pingnan City, obeys him.

Countless mysteries flooded Sun Miao'er's mind in an instant. Although she knew that her master's birth was unusual, she was only now realizing that her understanding of her master was insignificant, just a drop in the ocean.

Sun Yuanhu was thoroughly tricked this time, but fortunately he survived. However, the actions of the couple just now completely chilled the heart of Old Mrs. Sun.

Grandma Sun finally showed herself from the inner room. She walked out slowly with her back hunched over and hugged the still-shaken Xiaoman. "You two, if it weren't for Miao'er today, even the Emperor himself couldn't save you. You think you could drag my grandson into this? No way!"

Jin, having been rebuffed, glanced at Sun Miao'er and said, "She probably bewitched some wealthy man in the city with that vixen-like face, otherwise why would anyone help her? Humph!"

Seeing that she was so stubborn and could not be corrected despite repeated admonitions, Old Mrs. Sun's pent-up resentment finally erupted. She raised her cane and struck her, the blow carrying all the grievances, remorse, and anger that Old Mrs. Sun had accumulated over the years, landing heavily on Jin Shi.

Caught off guard, Jin looked up and glared at him, "You! You old hag! You've gone too far, how dare you hit me?"

Sun Miao'er took a deep breath, raised her chin, and gave a chilling look with a provocative gaze. "Auntie, you've probably lost your mind."

She paused for a moment, then continued, "Now that the Sun family's land deed is in my hands, it has nothing to do with the two of you anymore. I'm keeping you in the Sun family out of consideration for Xiaoman. Xiaoman is still young. If I kick you out, he will inevitably be the subject of gossip. Why don't you know what's good for you?"

"There's a saying: 'When you're under someone's roof, you have to bow your head.' Second Uncle, Second Aunt, it's best if you understand this principle. If you don't, then pack your bags and get out of the Sun family!"

Knowing that she had lost her support, Jin stopped being arrogant and mocked herself, "Ha, well, now you all can shit on my head... If I had known this would happen, I shouldn't have kept you around in the first place."

Sun Miao'er laughed instead of getting angry, but there was no good intention in her laughter. "Yes, you shouldn't have kept me. Aunt is right. You sold Xiao Ning, sold me, and then sold your own son Xiao Man. Isn't that great!"

Sun Yuanhu carefully tugged at Jin's sleeve, trying to remind her to say less.

Jin raised her head, her eyes filled with resentment. "My own son? If it weren't for this son, would I have been dragged into this mess?"

She's right. If she didn't have a son, she could have dumped Sun Yuanhu and remarried. But women who have given birth are unwanted in this area. Nobody wants a wife who's still thinking about someone else's child.

These were Jin's heartfelt words, yet every single one pierced Xiaoman's heart with pain. Although he was used to it, his eyes still welled up with tears when he heard them with his own ears.

“Alright, Auntie.” Sun Miao’er took Xiaoman’s hand. “Grandma and I will take good care of Xiaoman. You don’t need to interfere. Just try not to cause any trouble in the future. Otherwise, I’ve already warned you.”

Sun Miao'er looked around the courtyard. "You've been occupying these rooms for long enough. I sleep in the woodshed, and Grandma sleeps by the stove. Are you all comfortable with that? Why don't we switch places starting today?"

Jin remained silent.

Sun Yuanhu dared not utter a word and listened intently.

The wooden door, sealed for many years, was finally opened. The furnishings inside were exactly as I remembered—it was the room of Sun Yuanyong, the eldest son of the Sun family.

Over the years, Jin has mistreated Sun Miao'er. She would rather lock up the house left by her parents than let Sun Miao'er live there.

At the worst point, they even left Sun Miao'er to sleep in the pigsty.

Now that things have come to this, stepping into this house again brings back the original owner's memories. The happy and peaceful days of the past have been shattered. Sun Miao'er and her younger brother have become orphans, and they have been forced to take over the house, nearly losing their lives several times.

Xiaoman was depressed. His face, which was usually covered with a sweet smile, was now shrouded in sadness. Such a young child could not hide it very well. His intention was not to make his sister worry.

Sun Miao'er knew that saying more now would be useless; only time could slowly heal Xiaoman's inner wounds. "Xiaoman, does your shoulder hurt? Shall I massage it for you?"

Without saying a word, Xiaoman threw herself onto Sun Miao'er's shoulder. Tears welled up and streamed down her cheeks, soaking half of Sun Miao'er's shoulder.
