Chapter Twenty-Six: Becoming a Disciple

The soaked cicadas were neatly arranged on a sieve and dried quickly under the midday sun.

After finishing writing the prescription, Fu Yuchi stood up lazily, stretched, rubbed his slightly sore shoulders, and leaned against the door frame.

The old door frame creaked as he touched it, and the man's expression was inscrutable. His gaze lingered on the sieve, as if he were filled with apprehension about the lunch.

Sun Miao'er started a fire in the courtyard, with a deep iron pot on top, and poured in just enough oil to cover the cicadas as if counting her treasures.

Once the oil is hot, take out the dried, plump cicadas and put them into the pot one by one. The oil sizzles and boils, and after a short while, the courtyard is filled with a crispy aroma.

Sun Miao'er placed the golden-brown fried cicadas on a plate and handed it to Xiaoman. Xiaoman, who is usually greedy, hesitated to take it today.

"What's wrong? Are you so scared? I'll eat one for you." Sun Miao'er picked up a piece with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth.

Mmm, chicken flavor, crunchy, just like the taste I've had before. My face lit up with a blissful expression; I was thoroughly enjoying it.

Seeing her older sister praising the fried cicadas, Xiaoman shakily reached out and took them into the kitchen.

Before long, the braised carp and vegetarian dishes were ready. Grandma Sun nodded in satisfaction and called her granddaughter, "Miao'er, pour some wine for Doctor Fu."

Fu Yuchi dusted off his sleeves, took the wine glass, and said, "Thank you for your hospitality, Grandma Sun. I'll just have one glass; too much drinking will only lead to trouble."

Grandma Sun's complexion had improved considerably, and she no longer had to gasp for breath several times after each sentence as before. "Miao'er, what kind of dish is this?"

"Grandma, these are the fried cicadas that my sister made! I thought Grandma taught my sister to make them this way!" Xiaoman quickly explained.

Grandma Sun looked surprised and hesitated for a while before speaking, "It seems that Miao'er came up with this herself. Grandma has never seen this way of eating before."

Not only had they never seen this way of eating before, but apart from Sun Miao'er, no one else present thought it was edible.

Sun Miao'er handed the chopsticks to Fu Yuchi, "Doctor Fu, won't you try some?"

"I've only ever heard that cicadas can be used in medicine, I didn't know they could also be eaten as a dish." Fu Yuchi took the chopsticks, naturally unwilling to try it, and placed his first chopstick on the carp.

Mmm, the fish is so tender, it feels like my tongue has been struck, lingering on the fish for a long time, wanting to savor the deeper layers of flavor. The salty and savory flavor is tinged with a hint of sourness, and then has a sweet aftertaste.

It seems that the Sun family girl's cooking skills are indeed quite good.

Sun Miao'er sensed a hint of approval from Fu Yuchi's slight nod, but what did that matter? Before starting her own business, she had washed dishes, learned Western cuisine, sold insurance, and run a restaurant. She had tried everything she could, and it took her many years of hard work and experience in the business world to develop a keen eye for business.

Xiaoman volunteered to pick up a cicada, held it in his hand and examined it for a long time, then suddenly closed his eyes and put the cicada in his mouth. He thought it would taste strange, but it was unexpectedly delicious. It was fragrant and crispy, like fried chicken, with the aroma of beans. It was a taste he had never experienced before.

Xiaoman's furrowed brows gradually relaxed, and she slowly opened her eyes, revealing a smile. "Doctor Fu, you should try one too, it's delicious!"

Fu Yuchi stared coldly at the plate of fried cicadas, seemingly captivated by Xiaoman's expression. For a moment, he felt an urge to try it, but reason prevailed over him.

"Doctor Fu, please give me the honor of trying it."

Under the relentless bombardment from the Sun family, Fu Yuchi finally mustered the courage to eat the strange food.

Indeed, it was even better than the fish from before. His brows relaxed, and a faint smile remained on his face. This time, he nodded solemnly, no longer suppressing his feelings. "I never imagined that Jin Chan could cook such delicious food."

"See? I didn't lie to you." Sun Miao'er was already very confident in this dish, and now that she had received confirmation, she was naturally overjoyed.

Fu Yuchi enjoyed the meal immensely, and Xiaoman also ate her fill, finishing even the vegetarian dishes she usually disliked.

After lunch, it was Fu Yuchi's turn to give Grandma Sun acupuncture. Sun Miao'er stood by, watching Fu Yuchi's every move, afraid of missing anything.

"Miao'er, you're watching so intently, are you trying to steal my skills?" Grandma Sun teased.

Sun Miao'er then averted her gaze and muttered, "Isn't Miao'er just thinking of Grandma? Once I learn it, if Grandma's illness recurs, we won't have to trouble Doctor Fu to make a trip. Miao'er can treat Grandma at home by herself."

Hearing this, Old Mrs. Sun couldn't help but laugh. "Doctor Fu, look how filial my Miao'er is. But acupuncture isn't something you can learn just by looking at it once or twice. I've been married into the Sun family for decades. Your grandfather's family has been doctors for generations, and they've left behind quite a few medical books. I haven't figured anything out even after all these years, but she thinks she can learn it after looking at it once or twice!"

Sun Miao'er blushed slightly as Grandma Sun teased her. She was just curious and wanted to see, but whether she could learn it was another matter. However, Grandma Sun didn't think so.

Since we can't be a perfect couple, it's good to be able to establish a relationship with someone else.

"Miao'er, Grandma sees that you are interested in this medical knowledge, unlike your father and your second uncle. Back then, your grandfather chased after them with a stick, but they refused to touch the medical books. How come it's different when it comes to you?"

Without giving it much thought, Sun Miao'er said directly, "Yes, it's good to learn some medical skills to have some protection. If you ever get sick in the future, Miao'er will know how to do it herself, so you won't have to worry!"

"Since that's the case, then today, in front of Physician Fu, Grandma will act as a middleman. You can acknowledge Physician Fu as your master and have him teach you medicine, how about that?" Grandma Sun thought that since it was Miao'er's own interest, she was determined to make this happen. There wasn't much else she could do for her granddaughter.

If a woman has a skill to rely on, she won't be bullied in her husband's family and will have a job. Moreover, if she knows some medical skills, she can not only rely on herself but also protect herself.

Sun Miao'er hadn't expected that Old Lady Sun would have such a plan. She should have been more careful earlier and hadn't admitted it. But then she thought, learning medicine is also a way to get rich. When she has mastered the skills, she can treat the villagers and earn some capital. Raising pigs and growing vegetables like this will take forever to make a fortune.

Fu Yuchi's hand trembled slightly as she inserted the acupuncture needles, but she quickly regained her composure. After all, having an apprentice who could cook wasn't a bad thing; it was better than cooking herself and ending up burning the kitchen down.
