Chapter 145 One Flew Over the Asylum (Part 4)

Inside the research base.

The argument grew increasingly heated.

Jiang Cheng sat in the main seat of the conference room, his head down as he listened quietly to the argument on either side of him. The opposing sides were Chen Ang and Shen Yiran.

No, that's not all. The research group of fifty people split into two factions, each vying for power, and they were expressing their own views. The main topic of discussion was whether or not to continue with the brain-like implantation chip process.

Just hours earlier, after the chip was implanted, the first experimental subject correctly executed the instructions, astonishing all the researchers with amazing results, before rapidly decaying and dying.

The RBN test subject seemed unable to tolerate the intervention of external objects. In order to confirm this, Jiang Cheng conducted a test on the second one.

The scene was the same: the robotic arm accurately embedded the chip into the fixed position, and after struggling for a while, the second chip received the instruction and then died.

The entire process took less than five minutes, and the Brain-Inspired Project had already lost two test subjects. These two test subjects had taken researchers two months of cultivation time, as well as expensive time and research costs.

In her extreme heartache, Shen Yiran reached a consensus with several researchers: since the experimental subjects did not want their emotional modules disrupted, or rather, they had a rejection reaction, they should simply use an external link chip, without disturbing any of the original modules of the RBN, giving them absolute freedom.

This might make the brain-like experiment successful; otherwise, forcibly implanting a third RBN would only lead to greater losses.

Shen Yiran stared at Chen Ang, who disagreed with her. The two had been arguing for about half an hour, neither able to convince the other, and the stalemate continued.

Actually, she had another selfish reason that she didn't mention. From beginning to end, she witnessed every tiny growth of the experimental subject. This feeling of nurturing a life made her unable to bear seeing any more necrotic materials. Therefore, Shen Yiran wanted to seek other solutions.

For example, if we don't erase the emotional component and keep it as a complete entity, wouldn't that perfectly solve the problem?

However, Chen Ang had concerns. He and Jiang Cheng had previously reached an agreement that no inanimate individual should possess the same emotional value as humans. They should not have feelings of joy or sorrow, nor the ability to think independently. A puppet is a puppet, and this involves an ethical issue.

If a brain-like state were perfected and granted a high degree of freedom, how would it be defined?

"A creature created by humans?"

"Non-living matter that is equivalent to human beings?"

It can rival humans anywhere, has the ability to process massive amounts of information, works like a supercomputer, and even has emotional responses? It's not a living being, yet it fits the concept of a perfect being.

“Since we can use an external chip, we can control the experimental subjects. Why worry about their resistance? They will obey as long as we issue a command. Why not try a new idea? Do we have to stick to one path and never turn back until we hit a wall? Scientific experiments need to be flexible. I hope Dean Jiang will consider my suggestion.”

Shen Yiran said to Jiang Cheng very sincerely that she knew that no matter how much she argued with Chen Ang, it would be useless, since they could not reach a consensus anyway.

Of the fifty researchers present, everyone knew that in the end, Jiang Cheng was the one who made the final decision; only his suggestions could be implemented. Therefore, everyone's gaze involuntarily turned to this key figure.

Jiang Cheng remained silent for a while, and only raised his head when everyone was quiet. He first looked at Shen Yiran very seriously.

All eyes were fixed on him, waiting for an answer.

"I've decided to give it one more try. If Subject 3 fails again, we'll consider other options. RBN is expensive, but not ridiculously so. We can afford to train a hundred of them. That's all for now, meeting adjourned!"

"Dean Jiang!"

Upon hearing the reply, Shen Yiran jumped up, looking very anxious, wanting to say something but unsure how to change Jiang Cheng's mind.

She had witnessed this more than once; once Jiang Cheng made a decision, very few people could change it. He spoke with conviction and unwavering resolve, because he was very determined, extremely determined.

From the very beginning of the plan, his primary consideration was to remove the emotional component; even if the experimental subject was rendered useless, he was unwilling to change this idea.

The key to breaking the deadlock lies in the success and failure of number three. If the situation is exactly the same again, then Jiangcheng may need to devise another plan.

Inside the laboratory, a group of researchers gathered together, silently watching Jiang Cheng operate the equipment on the observation platform.

People had slightly different opinions. Chen Ang and Wan Xingyan, among others, firmly believed that there were no mistakes in any step and that something must have gone wrong somewhere else. They had worked with Jiang Cheng to refine the theory countless times, so they were naturally convinced of it.

Jiang Cheng began operating on the third experimental subject. Shen Yiran stared nervously at his hands, then turned to look at the culture tank, her gaze shifting between the two. She truly did not want to witness her hard work go to waste time and time again.

This feeling is extremely agonizing.

The robotic arm starts, cuts the culture vessel, locates the RBN material module, destroys the neuron, and then implants it—all in one smooth motion.

This time, Jiang Cheng didn't even test the calculation speed for linear equations. He knew that if the experimental subject decayed, even the fastest speed would be useless...

Shen Yiran and the other researchers watched intently, holding their breath and not blinking.
