Jiang Cheng was living a peaceful life in Lanjing, unaware that a momentous event was unfolding thousands of kilometers away in the United States. The country's top research leaders were currently facing a predicament and actively seeking a way out.
Everything is related to the scientific satellite that went missing that night.
Humanity, in an attempt to observe the vastness of the universe, painstakingly built a ladder to the heavens step by step. Looking up at the sky, some often wonder: is this sky, which we take for granted, truly as we understand it?
Perhaps not.
Goering stood at the window on the tenth floor of the Astronomical Institute, with an old woman cleaning beside him. As always, he smoked, letting the damp smoke drift outside through the half-open window.
He is the main character today, but he hasn't made his appearance yet.
Göring was trying to calm himself down. He wasn't nervous, but he didn't know how to describe what he had experienced, everything he had seen in the Black Tower where the Origna and Monrommehra rivers met that day.
He was mentally preparing his speech.
In fact, the original Göring was an outstanding young man who could speak eloquently in any situation. He could have been quite composed, even when facing the top figures in the scientific community.
There are countless kinds of people. Some are good at talking, but deep down they absolutely dislike all kinds of social occasions. After experiencing some things in his youth, Göring suddenly realized that hypocrisy and flattery were not suitable for him. He gave up the possibility of a direct promotion in the scientific research field and went to that remote observation station.
He willingly remained silent for more than a decade. This was not an escape, but simply a choice to live a life he enjoyed. The days there were peaceful and serene, a rare and precious experience.
However, this kind of life has now been disrupted.
The H-012 experimental scientific satellite, designed to observe extraterrestrial visitors, has been in space for over five years. At the time, this satellite represented the pinnacle of astronomical technology. Even today, some aspects of it remain at the forefront of technology, such as its transmission and observation equipment.
However, this advanced satellite, which has been studied and imitated by countless researchers, has now lost contact with the Black Tower in Pittsburgh, and its situation in space is unknown. Experts speculate that it is completely unreliable for reference.
It could be damaged by impacts from space debris, or it could be derailed from its original orbit due to unforeseen circumstances. But what everyone tacitly agrees on is, what kind of situation could cause the embedded signal chip to be damaged? That's almost impossible; only deliberate interference could occur.
Without restoring contact with the satellite, all speculation is useless. Therefore, the astronomical research station convened experts from various fields who had participated in the research and development to discuss the issue together.
In the office at the far end of the tenth floor, the atmosphere was solemn and dignified. Many people were deep in thought with their heads down. They had just finished their discussion, and now no one was speaking.
Everyone was waiting for the head of the observation team, Göring, to arrive and explain the situation in detail before they could discuss it further.
"Has anyone arrived yet? What time is it?" an elderly man sitting in the front asked his assistant in a low voice.
"Team Leader Goring has arrived and is outside. I'll go and urge him now."
"ASAP."
Goring, who was by the window in the corridor, finally finished his cigarette, exhaled deeply, and walked towards the conference room.
Even though I hate these things, there's nothing I can do about it.
He just wanted to get through the process as quickly as possible, report the situation, and wait for the bigwigs to make a decision.
Those two young men working under Göring were also unlucky. They had only been working for two years when they encountered such a major event, and they even experienced it firsthand. He wasn't even there at the time; to be precise, he was a step too late.
According to Goring's philosophy of "lying flat," nothing should happen, and he could simply collect his salary peacefully, mow his lawn on his days off, feed the pigeons by the river, and drive with friends to a beer town on the edge of the state for a good drink. That's what life is all about.
After the scientific satellite lost contact, the two young men would be busy for a while, and he, as the team leader, was not spared either.
When Göring pushed open the door, he almost instantly felt all eyes on him. The old men's gazes were sharp and inquisitive, making him very uncomfortable. He forced himself to endure their stares; it had been a long time since he had experienced anything like this. The silent black tower of Pittsburgh felt much better to him.
He stood in front of the stage and looked around.
Many prominent figures he had previously seen in scientific journals were present, including his astronomical idol from his youth, Buschnien—an elderly man in his eighties with white hair.
In addition, there was Mallory, who was hailed as the "businessman" at the pinnacle of the scientific community.
Ai Jincheng, the research group leader of new energy utilization technology, a rising star in the field of physics, and a young researcher who participated in the G10 summit, wore gold-rimmed glasses and had a calm expression, though he looked somewhat weak.
Having just recovered from a serious illness, the scientific community knew why: he had suffered a great blow from Jiang Cheng, a genius young man in the same field. After a period of recuperation, he finally recovered completely.
Göring withdrew his gaze.
"Distinguished leaders, I am the leader of the second team at the Pittsburgh Black Tower observation station. My name is Göring. I believe you have all seen the documents in your hands. Just the day before yesterday, a horrifying incident occurred at the observation station. According to my team members, the H-012 satellite experienced an anomaly that day. Its signal was interfered with, and within seconds, the Black Tower lost its connection with the satellite. After a period of cluttered footage, wavy stripes appeared, and then the connection was completely lost. I have brought the video recording with me."
