Chapter 168 Multiple Events in the Timeline

The assassin, crouching on the air conditioner unit on the balcony, experienced a shock that felt like witnessing his deeply believed reality crumble before his eyes. His mind went blank for a moment, his mouth opened slightly, and his pupils contracted sharply.

When did this woman appear next to him...? As a top assassin, his senses were terrifyingly sharp. How could he not notice her? He only realized there was someone beside him by glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.

Bathed in moonlight, the sword resting on his shoulder gleamed, its sharp edge piercing his very skin. He could feel the stinging cut even in the finest hairs. Perhaps with just a slight exertion, this woman would instantly decapitate him.

In the assassin's view, Gu Qingwan was naked, her knees covering her chest, her entire body as flawless and beautiful as jade. Unfortunately, he had no interest in appreciating her; he had no doubt that he was about to die.

Everything seemed eerie and unreal. The assassin even felt like he was dreaming, perhaps hallucinating. His sins had affected his mind. He closed his eyes once; perhaps when he opened them again, the woman before him would vanish. He continued his mission.

The assassin thought optimistically and did just that, closing his eyes and then calmly opening them again. Gu Qingwan was still looking at him, her eyes cold and devoid of any human emotion.

"Hello, miss, I'm here to fix the air conditioner, please don't misunderstand." The man's voice was hoarse, offering a weak and feeble explanation.

At 3:16 a.m., he was squatting outside the window on the first floor of Huanjiang Residential Area, like a gecko, and said he was repairing an air conditioner.

What a dedicated worker.

The cold wind howled, but Gu Qingwan remained silent. From the moment she appeared and landed here, the assassin's fate was sealed. She meticulously calculated the angle at which to thrust the blade into her opponent's neck, ensuring the blood splattered as close as possible, so that the residents wouldn't wake up in the morning to a large pool of blood on the wall and panic.

She wasn't listening to the assassin; she was completing calculations in those few seconds.

The alloy dagger plunged into the man's neck in the next instant, exiting on the other side, piercing through the entire neck. The assassin instantly felt a chill rush into his trachea, the cold wind contrasting sharply with the numbness and burning sensation at the wound.

Blood spurted out, and in the moonlight, the shadow appeared in the groove of the drainpipe on the first floor. The man looked like a shrimp that had been skewered, his neck slowly tilting to the side, his eyes completely lifeless.

He died.

Just half a second ago, he was still alive, his body was warm, and his heart was beating.

Two mechanical arms sprouted from Gu Qingwan's smooth back, firmly clamping down on the assassin's body. A steel wire shot out with a "whoosh," wedging itself onto the rooftop of an adjacent building. The wire contracted, and she slowly rose, escaping the blood-stained bulge in the floor.

The signals in her brain had already been processed, and sent to the Lanjing police in the dead of night. Before dawn, professionals would climb to the top of the building, wrap up the body, and take it away. The killer's name and identity remained unknown; he was, after all, a parasite living in the shadows, and his disappearance would cause no ripples.

That does save some trouble.

"The assassin infiltrated Huanjiang Residential Area in Lanjing City with the intention of threatening Dean Jiang's personal safety. He has now been eliminated, and the body should be retrieved as soon as possible."

The message was so bland in both tone and narration that it was hard to believe, as if Gu Qingwan had swatted a mosquito on an ordinary day.

In fact, as she moved through the night, leaving the residential area and returning to her charging pod, she was calculating a meticulous set of data in her mind. Then, the emergency command that Gu Qingwan had set was activated after multiple reflexes.

The first assassination attempt on Jiang Cheng demonstrated that some forces already took this leading Chinese scientist seriously enough, and were willing to send threats at any cost. They wouldn't act openly, but no one could predict how many underhanded methods they would employ.

She was reactivated and assigned to "Boss Jiang Cheng's" side for his personal safety. Her first mission was to protect the leader, which was several years ago.

Gu Qingwan is a knife lurking in the shadows. She lies dormant beside Jiang Cheng, an inconspicuous butterfly disguised on the wall, a withered leaf on the ground that no one would notice, but she has the power to kill everything.

In this somewhat quiet night, everything seemed peaceful; humans slept soundly, dreaming fantastical dreams. Jiang Cheng slept soundly, lying flat on his back in the dimly lit room, his breathing steady. Beside him, Luo Xiaoli lay sprawled out, one long leg draped over Jiang Cheng.

On this somewhat quiet night, apart from the bloodstains on the floorboards on the first floor indicating what had happened, Gu Qingwan returned to her hibernation pod, reconnected to the equipment, and began charging. Her eyes remained fixed on the surveillance camera, keeping abreast of everything that was happening in Huanjiang Community.

On this somewhat quiet night, September had just arrived in this unfamiliar city. She was a young girl visiting relatives in Lanjing from elsewhere. The house, which should have been occupied by a real family of three, was empty except for her, who was silently assembling a Chinese M99 sniper rifle, its dark body gleaming.

On this somewhat quiet night, at the American Astronomical Institute, Goring and his deputy leader Mark had just finalized the development drawings for the detector and submitted them to their superiors, urging them to speed up its construction and launch it into orbit to search for the missing observation satellite.
