Chapter 188 Return

The researchers watched almost as the brain-like detector entered the dimension of death, their hearts filled with immense trepidation, as if they had personally thrown what they had created into the mouth of a dark behemoth.

And it swallowed it whole without any hesitation.

The signal was cut off as expected.

They had previously viewed the vast universe on a large screen through the camera of the neuromorphic detector, gazing at that location as they moved forward.

To put it more intuitively, there are tiny black dots on the equator, which are like ink in a vast galactic painting. These things devour the original colors of the painting, and anything that gets stained with these drops of ink will disappear instantly.

Researchers are often awestruck by the twinkling stars. When the stars shine together, they create a striking contrast with the empty and desolate space, exuding a mesmerizing beauty that holds a fatal attraction for astronomy enthusiasts.

However, at the same time, anyone who gazes at the vast and boundless universe, even through a camera transmitting signals, can feel a sense of fear.

The fear of the immense is because it contrasts with the insignificance of humankind.

More than anything, it's the fear of the unknown.

When you know that a burglar has broken into your home in the middle of the night, armed with a weapon, and is about to steal your refrigerator, TV, all your valuables, and even a half-open box of Cheers & Wonderful cookies, you might be a little scared, but not to the point of trembling.

But if an unknown creature makes strange noises and howls in the living room, this creature, which is like a wild beast or a spirit, might find a person's scent and break down the door to eat you, or it might explore and then escape. I'm afraid anyone would lose control of their bladder and bowels.

Even without seeing it, just imagining what the monster looks like is enough to fill one with dread.

Someone once conducted a very interesting experiment. It was a game-like facility where a glass water tank wrapped in black cloth was designated as number one, and another completely transparent one was designated as number two.

Both were tested on the subjects, and it was clear that when people put their hands into the first box, they were filled with resentment. When they touched the slippery, wet thing, they wanted to jump up and pull their arms out and run away.

Jiang Cheng has stayed in the observation room daytime for the past few days. The short wait has made everyone anxious, mainly because no one knows when the brain-like detector will be able to return.

It may be a long way off, or it may be just around the corner.

At night, researchers take turns on duty in the observation room, and the same was true on the night of March 14th...

Jiang Cheng was busy preparing for the plasma cannon project, and when he still received no response from No. 4 in his attempts to communicate, he left work early. He spent the entire afternoon in his dormitory, and after dinner, he continued his research.

At midnight, it was very quiet outside, the river flowed slowly, and only a few lights were on on the second floor of the observation building. The staff on duty could not sleep; they had to keep a close eye on the brain-like detector.

In front of the huge screen, the researcher sitting in the chair was a young man, holding a cup of coffee and a book in his hand.

Those who truly love learning will never stop pursuing knowledge throughout their lives; this may be the difference between researchers and ordinary people.

He took a small sip of his bitter coffee and adjusted his black-rimmed glasses.

"What are you looking at?" My colleague next to me had just returned from the restroom.

"Oh... I read a short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa."

"This night is so long. It's only midnight, and I won't be able to get off work until tomorrow morning."

"I don't think it's long at all; there aren't many quiet times during the day," the young man with black-rimmed glasses said before continuing to read.

The observation room fell silent, with only the occasional sound of a cup being picked up and put down, and the rustling of pages turning.

There is nothing else.

Another researcher stared idly at the large screen, hoping that a small red dot would appear in the darkness, signifying that the brain-like detector had successfully escaped the dimension of death.

But... but this scene seems to never happen, because space is as still as a stagnant pool, with only boundless emptiness, existing for ages and eternity.

As he watched, he got a little sleepy and yawned.

Why were the sounds of turning pages and the dark screen so hypnotic? His eyelids were really drooping, and after closing his eyes for a few seconds... he suddenly opened them again, as if he had already taken a nap. After a brief moment of wakefulness, the "bugs" of sleepiness crawled back into his brain.

When you're at your lowest point, your perception of reality becomes blurred, all sounds seem very distant, and your body sinks deeper and deeper. The researcher, squinting, vaguely saw a red dot of light flash by.

It then immediately disappeared from the screen.

A few seconds later, it flickered again...

Damn it, is it a hallucination?

The observer sitting next to the person reading the book thought vaguely, his eyes gradually returning to clarity from a dazed state, his pupils focusing on the real, flashing red marker.

The observer felt a "boom" in his head, jumped up from his chair, pointed at the cursor, and grabbed his colleague with his other hand, saying, "Detector! The detector signal is back!"

My colleague was pulled so hard he stumbled, his books fell to the ground, and he stood up, staring at the screen with the same shocked expression.

Yes! The fourth probe, which all of humanity has been eagerly awaiting, has finally emerged from the dead dimension after several days! It is on its return journey, preparing to return to its planet!
