Jiang Cheng couldn't bear to let her father see her crying, so she stood outside for a long time.
He thought he could hold on, but when he asked, "Have you eaten cake?", he completely broke down in tears.
The first thing Dad did after regaining consciousness was not to talk about his pain, nor to say anything about missing him, and he didn't even call out Jiangcheng's name.
This almost instinctive concern was something he had kept in his heart for a very long time, and even when he was half-conscious, he was still thinking about it. That's why the first thing he said when he opened his mouth was, "I have to say this."
Every year on your birthday, the person who remembers it most isn't your friend, your lover, or even yourself—you might even forget it because you're too busy. But your parents will always remember this day. Because on a certain day of a certain year, the life they had longed for was born into this world, bringing them boundless joy and giving them a new identity. Therefore, this day is forever worth commemorating.
Jiang Cheng sat in the cold hospital corridor, fidgeting with his fingers. The air was thick with the pungent smell of disinfectant. His emotions were complicated, but he forced himself to calm down. He continued fidgeting with his fingers, tightening the twitch, and took a deep breath. Gu Qingwan, standing beside him, handed him a tissue at just the right moment.
He took it, wiped his face, tidied his hair which he had messed up from rubbing his cheeks too much, and waited until he calmed down.
Jiang Cheng entered the ward again.
He stayed for several hours, rambling on and on about comforting words.
He said the hardest part was over, the surgery was successful and there was nothing to be afraid of. He confidently assured everyone that with the current level of medical care, there would be no major problems. He said that the subsequent rehabilitation would be carried out at the top hospital in Kyoto, and that he should cooperate well with the doctors. He said that getting better was only a matter of time.
After repeating similar words several times, Jiang's mother's eyes finally calmed down and showed some relief. She nodded in deep agreement.
When Jiang Cheng came out of the restroom after going to the restroom, he told Gu Qingwan, "The situation on the Federation side is urgent, and I can't get away from here. I'll call Tali later to discuss handling matters remotely. In the next two days, have the hospital set up an office next to the ward, where I will direct the Federation's research progress. After these two days, once the condition is stable enough to be sent to Kyoto, I will rush back to take charge."
"Understood, boss, I'll go find the hospital right away."
"Go ahead."
Jiang Cheng put his hand into the dryer. As the hot air blew out, he closed his eyes, lost in thought.
With federal affairs so busy, and Lan Jing having this incident at this time, if something else were to happen, it would be truly disastrous.
But fate is like that; it's like a murderer who sets fire to a building and then returns, pouring more fuel on it while everyone is putting out the fire, watching the flames grow bigger and bigger with a cruel smile.
The killer that Jiangcheng encountered was even more terrifying; it not only added fuel but also planted a bomb.
On the night he arrived in Lanjing, after finishing his business, he went to the ward to check on his father, who was in a daze. After confirming that there was nothing wrong, he repeatedly told the doctor before he went back to rest.
He had been on a flight for over ten hours and hadn't slept since arriving here. Instead, he had been busy the whole time. Logically, he should have been exhausted and gone to sleep as soon as he got there.
However, when Jiang Cheng lay down on the bed, he felt sore all over, and his eyes were dry and sore. He closed his eyes but couldn't fall asleep.
He simply propped up his pillow, picked up a book at random, and quietly began to read.
When Jiang Cheng reached page twenty-seven, he felt his brain completely shut down. So he put the book on the table next to him, tilted his pillow, closed his eyes, and fell asleep within seconds.
They weren't even properly covered with blankets.
In the room lit only by a desk lamp, the sound of even breathing could be heard. The curtains were half-drawn, with a gap through which the full moon of my hometown peeked in cautiously, its bright light slowly seeping in.
It seems the temperature is rising; if sleepiness were to materialize as butterflies, then butterflies would be flying all over the room.
A dozen minutes later, the door was pushed open very carefully with a "click". The hand holding the doorknob was very fair and tender like jade.
Gu Qingwan quietly entered and saw Jiang Cheng fast asleep on the bed. She took off her high heels and placed them aside, then walked over barefoot, turning off the bedside lamp with one finger. In the darkness, the woman with her hair cascading down was so beautiful. She was still wearing her work pencil skirt and shirt, and a sparkling crescent-shaped earring hung from her right ear.
Things like tonight have happened countless times; it's almost become a habit.
Whenever Jiang Cheng falls asleep, Gu Qingwan would come in to see if the lamp needed to be turned off, or to do something else.
But today is a little different...
As the graceful woman walked past, her eyes filled with a subtle tenderness, she paused abruptly, but still reached for the bedside and gently tucked in the blanket that wasn't properly covering her. She didn't turn around after doing this, as if waiting for something. A few seconds later, the voices of a soldier and a woman talking could be heard from the doorway.
The half-closed door opened.
The light from the corridor shone in, casting the shadow of a somewhat thin woman on the floor. She peered curiously into the darkness and was surprised to see a figure standing by the bed.
Gu Qingwan didn't turn around at that moment, but she saw the scene by the door clearly.
She tucked her hair back, showing no sign of panic, and calmly turned to walk towards the door, not forgetting to put on her high heels.
All of this was done under the woman's gaze.
