It's clear she put a lot of effort into it.
Jiang Cheng stared somewhat dazedly at the busy figure in the kitchen.
Is this what life is like?
They "forced" a woman who never lifted a finger to become what she is now, capable of doing everything and willing to do anything.
Is this really a good thing?
He couldn't help but frown and lower his head.
Just as Jiang Cheng was reflecting on everything in his life, Zhao Xuerou came out of the kitchen carrying the last bowl of spicy beef soup. She carefully held the large pot, and through the rising steam, happily called out to Jiang Cheng in the living room, "Honey, let's eat!"
There wasn't a trace of negative emotion in her voice, as if taking care of Jiang Cheng's daily life was what made her happy.
Faced with this special address, Jiang Cheng really didn't know how to respond, so he simply stood up in silence and walked towards the dining table, meeting Zhao Xuerou's overjoyed gaze.
After sitting down, Jiang Cheng glanced at everything on the table that he already understood, then picked up his rice bowl and ate in silence.
After a day of hunger, Jiang Cheng found this meal extremely satisfying.
As he ate a little, Zhao Xuerou would add more to his bowl, and even now, he hadn't managed to eat a single bite of rice.
"Honey, try these shrimp. They're very fresh. When I went to the market, everyone said they were freshly delivered that day. But I got off work too late and missed the first batch. If you like them, I'll go buy them in the morning when I have a day off!"
Zhao Xuerou smiled and pointed to a large box in the kitchen: "I also soaked some seafood in sauce for you, but it's not fully flavored yet. It will taste best if you marinate it in the refrigerator overnight. Tomorrow, I'll steam a pot of mixed grain rice for you to eat with it."
"Okay, sure."
Jiang Cheng simply responded to Zhao Xuerou's words, and spent most of his time eating with his head down.
Seeing Jiang Cheng engrossed in his meal, Zhao Xuerou finally felt a little relieved. She scooped a spoonful of scrambled eggs with tomatoes into her own bowl and ate it with her rice. "Sigh... I'm really exhausted today. I don't know what the boss was thinking. She insisted on keeping me working overtime. Everyone else was still here, but she just had to keep me here."
"Oh, by the way, a colleague gave me a tulip bulb, which I've kept in my office. You don't like other scents in the house, so I didn't bring it back. I'll take a picture and show it to you when it blooms."
"My new cup arrived. It's the glass I told you about, the one that only cost three yuan after I got a coupon. It's very pretty, but you can't drink hot water from it. I have to be careful not to break it again."
After telling Jiang Cheng a lot about what happened at work that day, Zhao Xuerou suddenly seemed to remember something, got up and ran into the kitchen.
Then, she came out carrying a plate of strawberries.
Zhao Xuerou gently placed the plate in front of Jiang Cheng and said softly, "When I went to the market, I saw someone selling strawberries, but strawberries are too expensive this season, so I didn't buy too many. Just try some fresh ones."
As she spoke, she pushed the plate a little closer to Jiang Cheng and looked at him hopefully, saying, "Try it, see if it's sweet."
Upon hearing Zhao Xuerou's words, Jiang Cheng looked up at the small plate on the table.
He might never have remembered this if he hadn't seen the strawberries.
But now, a torrent of memories suddenly appeared before his eyes.
Back in school, when Jiang Cheng had just started pursuing Zhao Xuerou, he knew that her favorite fruit was strawberries, without a doubt. She also had a quirk: she preferred off-season strawberries harvested in late autumn to winter strawberries that were just coming into season.
By then, the temperature had started to drop gradually, and the wind was quite strong.
Jiang Cheng searched all over Lanjing in order to buy fresh strawberries before finally finding out that there was a fruit vendor who supplied strawberries.
So every weekend he would go and buy strawberries for Zhao Xuerou. He would remove the bad ones, wash them thoroughly, and even clean the leaves and stems before carrying a basket of precious strawberries back to the girls' dormitory.
But now, everything has turned out the other way around.
Zhao Xuerou couldn't bear to buy the expensive strawberries, and even pushed the only plate of them in front of Jiang Cheng. How was she any different from Jiang Cheng, who had searched the entire city to buy the last basket of strawberries?
Thinking of this, Jiang Cheng felt a little gloomy.
Just then, Zhao Xuerou put another shrimp into his bowl, and Jiang Cheng sighed slightly: "You don't need to keep putting food on my plate. Just eat your fill. I'm almost full."
"Yes, I know, but..."
Zhao Xuerou put down her chopsticks, rested her chin on her hand, looked at Jiang Cheng across from her, and smiled with extremely beautiful eyes: "Seeing you enjoy your meal makes me very happy. I never get this kind of psychological satisfaction when I eat alone."
Hearing Zhao Xuerou's words, Jiang Cheng fell silent, unsure how to refute them.
In the end, he just sighed and went back to eating.
Seeing Jiang Cheng's lack of interest, Zhao Xuerou suddenly got up, ran to the storage cabinet, opened it and rummaged through it, and returned to the dining table with a bottle of Château Lagoff Grand Cru red wine from Château Cheval Blanc.
Her eyes sparkled as she showed the wine bottle in her hand, looking at Jiang Cheng with a hint of longing: "I've been saving this bottle of wine for a long time, thinking that one day I could take it out and drink it with you. Why don't we open this bottle today?"
Zhao Xuerou wasn't sure if it was just her imagination or if it was true, but it seemed that ever since that night when Jiang Cheng came home drunk and inexplicably woke up twice, his temper had become increasingly mild, and he wasn't as easily emotional as before. Although his speech was still calm and cold, at least he didn't resort to hitting or scolding her.
