Chapter 198 In my eyes, you are an eternal hero

This can be extended to the long river of time and human civilization. The birth of carbon-based life is inextricably linked to human civilization; it is the beginning of everything.

There's a line in The Three-Body Problem: "Give civilization to time, not time to civilization."

Here, Jiang Cheng realized that life carries meaning, rather than meaning carrying life.

We fill our stomachs, we talk about mountains and seas, about poetic ideals, about the lush grass and soaring birds.

Create a cozy room, record civilization in books, spend a wonderful night with your loved one, get drunk and stand on the street acting crazy, and cry with snot all over your face after being rejected by the girl you like.

Life encompasses all of this, so it is such a wonderful thing to be alive in this world.

Even though human civilization has its flaws and shortcomings.

Even though human nature has its dark, perverse, and selfish aspects.

Even though this colorful world has many disappointing aspects, I still want to advise those who have lost faith in their terrible lives: there are still some things worth praising.

Jiang Cheng and Luo Xiaoli returned home and did the things they used to do, washing up as usual, without feeling any sense of unfamiliarity, even though the couple hadn't been in the same room for several months.

But their tacit agreement was outrageous.

At nine o'clock at night, the lights of thousands of homes outside came on, but due to the clouds, the myriad stars could not be seen in the sky.

The lights were on in Luo Xiaoli's room. She was lying on one side of the bed, holding up her phone.

Jiang Cheng was on the phone, dealing with a multitude of tasks. Although he had left his post, he was still remotely overseeing the research progress of the plasma cannon. Gu Qingwan had compiled and reported many things to him, and he needed to nod and personally instruct each one before the plan could proceed smoothly.

Although she said she was playing on her phone, Luo Xiaoli's eyes weren't on the screen. Instead, she kept looking at Jiang Cheng, watching him intently arranging things with a touch of longing. Her gaze lingered on his eyes, eyebrows, and the wet hair that lazily lay on his forehead.

Luo Xiaoli licked her lips.

"By the way, I heard from a lot of people at school that we're facing a very tense situation right now, and that some kind of federation has been established to resolve this crisis. They say we might all be doomed if things go wrong. Is that true?"

She had asked the right person; the most central figure in this terrifying vortex was Jiang Cheng.

The person Luo Xiaoli likes, her boyfriend of over eight months, the guy she sleeps in the same bed with, is the one who was just recently considering whether or not to become the Federation's Commander-in-Chief.

When it comes to understanding the situation, no one knows more than Jiang Cheng.

After a slight hesitation, Jiang Cheng pulled off his bath towel and dried his hair. Luo Xiaoli's eyes suddenly lit up, but then dimmed immediately because he didn't see what he wanted to see. The other person came out of the bathroom wearing shorts again.

Jiang Cheng said, "The current situation is indeed not very optimistic. It is no exaggeration to say that all the forces are on high alert. Humanity has fought for thousands of years and experienced two world wars, with rivers of blood and people dying on the battlefield, but none of them have been as serious as this crisis. Most of our tension stems from a lack of understanding of their attack methods, modes of existence, and level of civilization. Even if we only understand 10% of their capabilities, we wouldn't be in such a distress."

He paused and continued, "However, there's no need to worry too much. The most capable people in the world have been concentrated in the Federation. Our efforts, our current vigilance and defense are rapidly increasing, reaching the limits of what modern civilization can achieve. If we still can't deal with invaders after all this, it can only mean one thing."

Jiang Cheng draped the bath towel on the balcony, turned his face, and shrugged. "That only shows that the demise of our civilization is inevitable. It's like a country with cold weapons fighting against a country with hot weapons. They're not even in the same league. So any more worrying is pointless."

Luo Xiaoli seemed to understand something and nodded seriously. She had just been listening to Jiang Cheng's phone call. Although Gu Qingwan had simplified the trivial matters to an extremely low level, it still sounded like gibberish to her.

She asked with a hint of concern in her voice, "Are you this busy now?"

Jiang Cheng sat down on the edge of the bed. "Yes, it's a good thing I didn't become the Federation's Commander-in-Chief, otherwise I would be ten times busier than I am now. Even so, as the head of the Federation's Science and Technology Group, I'm still incredibly busy. Today is considered a relatively good day."

"Ah...it's so hard."

Luo Xiaoli had only ever seen Jiang Cheng working tirelessly on his research, which was already the limit of what a person could do that she could understand.

If she knew what it meant for Jiang Cheng to be in charge of all the Federation's technology supply, she would be utterly shocked.

"Commander?" She keenly sensed the key information in the other person's words. "You've been asked to become the commander?"

"Yes, but I abstained."

"That guy from the Goose Country who was on TV the other day, he became the commander-in-chief. Is that the position you gave up?"

"Otherwise what?"

Luo Xiaoli suddenly couldn't speak. Her phone fell from her hand and landed on the bed. Her small, moist mouth was slightly open, and her eyes were filled with disbelief.

She knew her brother was extraordinary, highly regarded, and exceptionally talented in scientific research, but she could never have imagined that Jiangcheng had reached such a level; it was truly astonishing.

Is that something an ordinary person could even imagine?

Luo Xiaoli's reaction was relatively good. If Jiang's parents knew that their son had been nominated for the position of Alliance Commander-in-Chief, they might have fainted from excitement.

"Give up? Why?"

"It's very simple. I don't think I can do it," Jiang Cheng said with a sneer.

"Is there anything in this world that you can't do? I never think so."

She suddenly leaned in, her beautiful face full of seriousness, and gave Jiang Cheng a hard kiss on the lips.
