Chapter 55 I Want to Be Your Sister-in-Law

Chapter 55 I Want to Be Your Sister-in-Law

Huang Shan stared blankly at Qu Jie and said, "Qu Jie, are you kidding me?"

“This is no joke,” Qu Jie said seriously. “I never joke about feelings.”

After a few seconds of stunned silence, Huang Shan suddenly realized, "Holy crap! Qu Jie, you haven't been using me to get close to Shen Luo all this time, have you?!"

"No wonder you're so enthusiastic, accompanying me to intercept Chen Luo every day. When I was chasing Mo Chi, you ignored me completely."

"Did you already have feelings for Shen Luo? Then why did you trick me into pursuing him? What were you thinking?"

Qu Jie felt a little awkward and cleared her throat before saying, "You can only understand his character by getting to know him better. I'm different from you; I only care about looks."

Huang Shan pointed at Qu Jie with her finger, "Qu Jie, you're really something, you're truly my good sister. The daughter of a capitalist is just different, you know how to exploit others while they still have to thank you."

Qu Jie glanced at her casually and snorted, "You talk as if your dad isn't a capitalist."

Huang Shan snorted, "But I'm innocent and kind. Aren't you afraid I'll actually win Shen Luo's heart?"

Qu Jie shook her head, "We've known each other for over ten years. I know what you're going to do the moment you bend over. Shen Luo isn't your type."

"You're disgusting!" Huang Shan pouted. When she talked about her food, Shen Yan's face came to mind. "I want to be your sister-in-law."

Qu Jie: ...

“You’re thinking a bit too far ahead. You haven’t even had a chance to get to know Shen Luo’s older brother,” Qu Jie earnestly helped her best friend come up with a solution. “You need to understand his personality, hobbies, and job first. Most importantly, he’s not young anymore, so is he married?”

Qu Jie's words were truly devastating. Huang Shan was deeply hurt and hadn't considered the issue. "Let's come to the hospital to see Shen Luo again tomorrow and find out some information while we're at it."

Hospital ward.

Not long after Shen Yan made the call, Shi Jingman and Shen Minghui rushed over.

Seeing her youngest son injured like this, Shi Jingman couldn't help but cry, "Xiao Luo was fine when he left this morning, how did he become like this by noon!"

Shen Minghui's brows were also furrowed, his heart aching. His youngest son was the one he loved most. "Where is the driver who hit him?"

“They escaped,” Mo Chi replied from the side. “That van had a fake license plate, and the police are now checking the surveillance footage to track its whereabouts.”

With red eyes, Chu Rou said, "The friend who was with Xiao Luo at the time said that the car deliberately hit Xiao Luo, knocked her down, and then tried to run her over a second time, trying to kill her."

Upon hearing this, Shi Jingman cried even harder, "Who did Xiao Luo offend that they're trying to kill him?!"

“Minghui,” Shi Jingman grabbed Shen Minghui’s arm, “What should we do? What if they try to harm Xiao Luo again?”

Shen Minghui reassured Shi Jingman, "No, no one would dare to be so brazen as to make a move in a public place like a hospital."

Shen Yan stood to the side with his eyes lowered, his right thumb constantly rubbing the watch on his left wrist, lost in thought.

Mo Chi thought for a moment, "I'll hire a few bodyguards to guard the ward door."

The Shen family members, including Chu Rou, all looked at Mo Chi. Chu Rou asked timidly, "How much does it cost to hire a bodyguard?"

Seeing the reactions of those present, Mo Chi touched his nose and said, "I know someone here, it's very cheap, only a few hundred yuan a day."

Chu Rou could accept it. She nodded and whispered to Mo Chi, "Tell me how much money you need when we settle the bill, and I'll transfer it to you."

Mo Chi wanted to say no, but then he remembered that his salary card was with her, so he smiled and agreed, thinking of it as pocket money she was giving him.

Shen Yan looked at Mo Chi with a meaningful gaze. Hiring bodyguards was not something an ordinary person could afford. He glanced at Shen Luo on the bed, then walked out of the ward to make a phone call.

He walked to a secluded corner, took out his phone, glanced at the time, hesitated for a moment, and then dialed the number. It rang many times before the other end answered.

"Hey, Xiao Yan, do you know what time it is?" A somewhat resentful voice came from the phone.

Shen Yan lowered his voice and said, "Mom, Shen Luo was in a car accident."

After a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone, a calm voice asked, "Is he dead?"

“No,” Shen Yan took a deep breath and continued, “Someone deliberately tried to run over Shen Luo, but he hasn’t offended anyone else.”

"Shen Yan, what do you mean by this?" The voice on the phone became agitated and shrill. "You don't suspect that I did it, do you?"

"Am I so heartless in your eyes that I would lay a hand on an innocent child?"

The reaction on the other end of the phone relieved Shen Yan. "I'm fine now, you can go back to sleep!"

"How can I possibly sleep?" Shen Yan's mother roared. "Don't forget what you promised me. If you can't get married in China within two years, you'd better get back here and get engaged to Heidi."

"Also, I'm fine with marrying anyone, just not that burden from the Shen family."

"Mom, what nonsense are you talking about!" Shen Yan said helplessly, pressing his nose.

Shen Yan's mother snorted, "Don't think I don't know. You've been hiding her photos ever since you came back ten years ago. That girl is like a tomboy. I don't know what you like about her."

"Mom, how could you rummage through my things like that!" Shen Yan said, embarrassed and annoyed.

"Alright, alright, you'd better watch yourself, I'm hanging up."

Hearing the "beep...beep..." sound, Shen Yan took the phone away from his ear, looked out the window, and recalled events from ten years ago.

That year, he had just been admitted to university. Shen Minghui negotiated with his mother for a long time before she allowed him to return to China for a month.

Returning to his familiar yet unfamiliar home, he began to feel somewhat awkward. Apart from Shen Minghui, who was his father, everyone else should be considered an outsider.

Fortunately, they were all very enthusiastic towards him, especially Shen Luo, who followed him around all day asking him all sorts of questions. Chu Rou would also sit next to him and listen attentively as he talked about things in Country A.

Aunt Shi was very beautiful and gentle with him. At that time, he could understand why his father would remarry and marry a woman with a child.

If it were him, he would also choose Aunt Shi, rather than waiting for a strong woman to return to China and remarry, which would be an indefinite wait.

His mother was like that; she felt like she was the sun, the center of everything, and everyone had to revolve around her.

He had a great time during his time back in China. He liked to travel around with his camera, taking pictures everywhere. He loved the place and thought everything here was wonderful.

Until one day, he was cornered in an alley by a group of thugs.

Those thugs stole his camera and tried to extort money from him. He knew he couldn't fight off five or six of them alone, so he obediently handed over all his money.

But humans are greedy; once they get what they want, they want more. One of the stronger men lifted his chin with his dirty fingers.

He stared intently into the man's eyes, and he understood the man's intentions. This made his stomach churn, and he felt like vomiting.

"Take off your pants and lie down!" The man patted his face. "Be good, and I'll make your suffering less."
