Chapter 69 Chu Rou is missing
Shen Yan took Huang Shan back to the law firm to continue working.
As it was getting dark, Huang Shan's stomach started growling. She checked the time and wondered why Chu Rou had said she would treat everyone to dinner that night, but there was still no sign of food.
She thought for a moment and sent Chu Rou a message, but didn't receive a reply for a long time.
Huang Shan was starving, so she went to find Shen Yan. "Brother Shen Yan, didn't Sister Chu Rou say she was treating us to dinner tonight? Did she give you any information?"
Shen Yan took out his phone and checked it. Chu Rou hadn't sent any messages. He hesitated for a moment, then called Chu Rou.
The phone rang many times, but no one answered. Shen Yan put down his phone and tapped his fingers on the table.
After waiting a few minutes, he tried calling Chu Rou again, but no one answered.
Knowing Chu Rou's personality, she would definitely do what she said she would do. She wouldn't stand them up for no reason. Since there was still no news, Shen Yan felt something was wrong.
He checked the time; it was 6:30 PM. If Chu Rou hadn't been working overtime, she should have already gone home.
Shen Yan stood up and said to Huang Shan, "I can't get in touch with Xiao Rou. Let everyone disperse for now. Don't wait up. I'll go to her house to check on her."
Huang Shan also sensed something was amiss. "I'll go with you; it'll be more convenient."
Shen Yan paused, realizing that Huang Shan's words made sense. If Chu Rou was in the bathroom or with Mo Chi, it would indeed be inconvenient for him to be alone.
Let's go!
Shen Yan and Huang Shan arrived at Chu Rou's door and knocked a few times, but there was no response from inside.
"It seems like Sister Chu Rou isn't home. Where else could she have gone?"
Shen Yan thought for a moment, then called Shen Minghui to ask if Chu Rou had gone home. When he received a negative answer, he called Shen Luo, "Xiao Luo, is Xiao Rou in the hospital?"
"No, I messaged her at noon and she hasn't replied yet. I don't know what she's up to."
"I couldn't reach Xiaorou by noon?" Shen Yan felt increasingly uneasy. "Could she be with Mo Chi?"
"Mo Chi went back to City B yesterday." Shen Luo also became anxious. "My sister is missing, we can't get in touch with her?"
Shen Yan hummed in agreement. "No one answers the phone, no one's home, and Mo Chi isn't here either. Where else could she be?"
"Could they be at the company?" Shen Luo asked anxiously. "Brother, I'll call Mo Chi and ask him to check with the people at the company."
When Mo Chi received Shen Luo's call, he was in the hospital room with Qiao Siying.
Seeing that it was Shen Luo calling, he answered, "Hello, Shen Luo!"
"Mo Chi, my sister is missing!"
"What do you mean 'disappeared'?" Mo Chi was so shocked that he stood up from his chair.
Qiao Siying was startled. She wanted to ask what had happened, but Mo Chi went to a corner and continued making phone calls.
Shen Luo explained the situation, and Mo Chi's heart began to race. "I understand. I'll call the people at the company right away."
Mo Chi hung up on Shen Luo and first called Chu Rou, but no one answered after several attempts.
He then called one of the company's male secretaries to ask if he had seen Chu Rou today, and the answer was no, Chu Rou hadn't gone to the company at all today.
Mo Chi couldn't sit still any longer and paced back and forth in the ward.
Qiao Siying noticed her son's unusual behavior and became suspicious. She wondered who Mo Chi, who was usually so calm, was so agitated for.
Mo Chi scratched his head, feeling like there were some clues in his mind that he couldn't quite put together. He was thinking about recent events and who Chu Rou had offended.
Mo Xing'an? He wouldn't dare; he had already warned him.
Mr. Liu from Fuqiang Electronics? That's even more impossible; he's in prison right now.
He Yin? After the incident at Fuqiang Electronics, she disappeared without a trace. Besides, Chu Rou has always been wary of her. Who knows who might get hurt if they meet again?
Then there's that guy surnamed Wang, the honey badger; he's also in jail, but that's unlikely.
Mo Chi suddenly realized something: Ye Xia's bed photos had been exposed, Shen Luo's car accident, Chu Rou's disappearance...
He's the only one missing. The four of them were arrested together by that crew-cut guy that day. It was because of the four of them that the crew-cut guy was caught and sentenced to death. This is someone retaliating against them.
Mo Chi's mind raced. He thought of Qi Hang, who was Qi Hang's subordinate. He should be able to find out who was behind this.
...
Chu Rou, whom everyone was searching for, was lying in a van with her hands tied behind her back and her mouth taped shut.
The truck was traveling on a bumpy road, which woke Chu Rou up. She slowly opened her eyes, but it was pitch black and she couldn't see anything clearly. She could only see a faint halo of light not far from her.
Chu Rou followed the circle of light to find the source of the light and saw a small hole about the thickness of a finger in the wall of the carriage. It was probably left there in case she suffocated from lack of oxygen.
With the faint light shining in through the hole, Chu Rou's eyes adjusted to the darkness and she could vaguely see some things.
She sat up and tried to free her hands, but they were tied too tightly, and even with her wrists chafed, she couldn't loosen them at all.
There was a lot of cargo piled up at the entrance of the carriage, keeping her at the very back. Chu Rou sidled up to the cargo and nudged it with her shoulder; they were all cardboard boxes.
Undeterred, she tried each one one by one until she finally came across an iron frame. Chu Rou turned her back and began to rub the rope against the edge of the iron frame.
She didn't know how effective it would be, but this was the only way. Repeating the same action was tiring, and her arms ached. When she got tired, she would rest for a while, and when she felt a little better, she would continue grinding.
After an unknown amount of time, Chu Rou felt the rope on her hands loosen. She tried to move her wrists and pulled hard, and the rope broke.
She slowly peeled off the tape from her mouth, leaned over onto the carriage, and tried to peek through the hole to see what was happening outside.
If she encounters the police, she can call for help in time.
To her disappointment, the car drove on an empty avenue, with only dim streetlights on both sides.
Chu Rou kept glancing outside. The truck eventually stopped in a yard.
"The person is inside the carriage, blocked by the cargo."
"Hurry up and bring him inside, Brother Qiang is getting impatient."
It sounded like there were five or six people. Chu Rou moved her body, feeling weak. She hadn't eaten all day, and she felt like she couldn't fight off so many people.
Hearing the sound of the carriage door opening, Chu Rou put the tape off her face again, found the rope, tied her hands behind her back, and then lay down on the ground pretending to be asleep.
The car door opened, and several men unloaded the goods at the door, making the light much brighter.
Two men walked over to Chu Rou, lifted her to the carriage door, and threw her to the people below.
Damn it, Chu Rou's heart skipped a beat; she was terrified of being thrown to the ground.
Fortunately, the people below caught her and carried her on their shoulders as they went inside.
Chu Rou squinted as she looked around at the surroundings; it seemed to be a suburban villa.
The man beneath her carried her into the villa, up to the second floor, and to a room. He knocked on the door, and someone inside opened it.
The man threw Chu Rou to the ground. Luckily, there was a carpet on the ground, so the fall didn't hurt too much, but Chu Rou still let out a muffled groan.
The man sitting in the main seat on the sofa crossed his legs and looked down at Chu Rou, his voice icy, "If you're awake, stop pretending to be asleep."
