When Chu Juan saw her take a bite of the ginseng, his gaze froze for a moment. This was even more shocking than when he saw her bring back a pile of medicinal herbs.
She ate the ginseng...
He almost instinctively rushed forward and snatched the ginseng from her hand, but he was too late; a piece was already missing from the middle.
This ginseng was about three fingers thick and looked to be at least a thousand years old. It could save lives if necessary. Yet she just snapped it in half. This wasn't biting the ginseng; it was biting its flesh and drinking its blood.
Su Yuxi slowly chewed the ginseng in her mouth, looking at the person in front of her with a puzzled expression, wondering what he was so excited about: "What are you doing?"
Chu Juan's face contorted in anger, his nostrils flaring slightly. He looked at the ginseng in his hand, then at her chewing mouth, and his eyes reddened. He really wanted to dig the ginseng out of her mouth.
Fortunately, he was sensible and knew that these things belonged to her, so he had no right to say anything.
But we can't let her keep eating like that.
"You're hungry, I'll take you to eat something. You can't just eat this." It really is true, you can't just eat this. Whose body can withstand biting into a thousand-year-old ginseng?
Su Yuxi swallowed the ginseng, clutching her empty stomach, her little face full of bitterness: "But I need something to eat now."
She was already starving, and after carrying so much stuff, she could eat a whole cow if they brought her here.
Chu Juan pursed his lips, glanced at the night outside, and wondered where he could get her something to eat in the middle of the night.
But if they don't find it for her, and she's been eating ginseng, he thought for a moment, then gritted his teeth and took two steps outside: "I'll go ask the neighbor in front if they have anything to eat."
Su Yuxi nodded vigorously: "Okay, go ahead."
Chu Juan placed the ginseng in his hand on the small counter at the edge, and started to walk out. Just as he stepped out the door, he suddenly turned back and pulled up Su Yuxi, who had just squatted down to look for medicinal herbs: "Why don't you come with me? I'm a grown man, and I'm afraid people will think I'm a bad guy."
The truth is, he was afraid that if he left her here, she might eat something else, which would be the death of him.
Su Yuxi frowned slightly and glanced at her current clothes. If she went out like this, people would be more likely to think she was a bad person.
"I'm so dirty, I'm so tired, I don't want to go. You go, I'll wait for you at home."
This time, Chu Juan didn't care whether she wanted to or not, and directly pulled her outside: "It's okay, it's not far, just a short distance."
As he went outside, he saw a somewhat dilapidated Wuling Hongguang parked in front of his house. The car was covered in mud, and its original appearance was no longer visible.
Compared to her, the car looked like it had rolled through a mud pit; I have no idea how the security guards let her in.
It's past 3 a.m. now. On the secluded and quiet path, the moonlight is thin, only enough to outline two hurried figures. Apart from the occasional whistling of the wind, there isn't a single ghost in sight.
Soon they arrived at the house closest to their own.
The house is inhabited by a recently retired couple who are researchers. It's currently the old couple's time to sleep soundly. Normally, he would never do something so despicable as to disturb their peaceful sleep, but there's a reason for this. In order to protect the pile of medicinal herbs, he has no choice but to bite the bullet and ring the doorbell.
The doorbell rang, its sound amplified countless times in the quiet night.
Perhaps the elderly are light sleepers; as soon as the alarm rang, the lights upstairs immediately turned on, and they could hear the hushed conversations from upstairs while standing below.
Before long, the two elderly people came down hand in hand.
"Who is it? Who's outside?" The two elderly people were quite vigilant, and naturally dared not open the door rashly without confirming who it was.
"Hello, I'm Chu Juan from next door. I'd like to come over and borrow something from you two," Chu Juan replied politely.
The two elders listened with some disbelief. Who would come to borrow something in the middle of the night? Although they were wary, they were still afraid that he really was there to borrow something. They looked through the peephole and confirmed that it was indeed Chu Juan before opening the door.
"Hello."
The two old men squinted at the two people in front of them. Besides the handsome Chu Juan, there was a dirty girl standing behind him. At first glance, she looked like she had just been picked up from a garbage dump.
"Little Chu."
What are you doing here?
"Excuse me, sorry to bother you." Chu Juan had the air of a refined and upright gentleman, provided that he took off his slightly dirty pajamas.
"My friend is a little hungry. Do you two have any snacks or anything that you could lend me?"
The two elderly people exchanged a glance. In their memory, Chu Juan had always been a gentle and steady person. The fact that he was dragging someone over to ask for food so late at night meant that he was probably really starving. Judging from the young girl's attire, she did seem to have been hungry for quite a while.
They didn't ask anything: "Okay."
"Wait here for a moment, I'll go get it." The old woman turned around to gather some snacks and fruit, while the old man chatted with them.
Soon the old man brought out a large bag of fruit and some biscuits and snacks.
"Child, take this, don't go hungry." The two elderly people were very kind. When they handed him the things, they looked at Su Yuxi, who was so hungry she was almost fainting, with heartache.
Chu Juan's lips remained curved in a smile as he stiffly accepted the bag of fruit and snacks.
"Thank you, I'm sorry to bother you. I'll come to thank you another day."
"Go on, go back, eat something, wash up, and go to sleep. It'll be dawn soon."
"Okay, sure." Chu Juan thoughtfully closed the door for the two elders and then led them home.
As soon as she got home, Su Yuxi couldn't wait to open the cookies and began to wolf them down without any regard for her image. However, given her current state, there was no point in talking about her image.
Seeing that she was really hungry, Chu Juan went to the refrigerator and got her two bottles of water.
"Eat slowly, your takeout will be here soon."
"Okay, you go ahead with your work," Su Yuxi replied hastily.
He stood to the side and took a deep look, then hugged the wooden frame of the building.
He immediately took out his phone and called Fu Huaijin.
I don't know if he was awake or still awake, but his voice sounded very clear.
"What's up?"
Chu Juan cleared his throat and told him about Su Yuxi's sudden return.
There was a long silence on the other end, then a curt reply of three words, "I understand," was given, and the call ended.
Although it was only three words, he could hear a sense of relief in them, as if a great burden had been lifted.
Since the person didn't die and came back, it means that he will have good days ahead of him.
Chu Juan smiled and tossed aside his phone to look at his three precious medicinal herbs.
Su Yu was eating snacks downstairs until the takeout arrived. The snacks in her hand lost their appeal, and she started devouring other delicious food instead…
When Chu Juan went downstairs, he saw a table full of empty takeout boxes and a little person sleeping on the sofa.
He didn't wake her, but turned around and went back into the room to get a thin blanket and covered her with it.
There was no trace of disgust on her face, but rather a hint of barely perceptible heartache.
