The boy paused, stared at her for two seconds, and then took out two fifty-yuan bills from his pocket and gave them to her.
That's all, there's no more.
Su Yuxi's eyes lit up when she heard him speak Mandarin: "You can understand what I'm saying."
The boy rolled his eyes at her. He had already said it; why did he need to ask again?
Su Yuxi also realized that her question was a bit stupid. She clutched the money in her hand and tried to reason with him in a gentle tone: "Um... could I borrow your phone to make a call? I can pay you."
She handed back one of the two fifty-yuan notes the boy had just given her.
The boy's beautiful eyes were fixed intently on the girl in front of him: he couldn't possibly refuse a phone call for fifty yuan.
He pulled a slightly worn cell phone out of his pocket and gave it to her, while also taking fifty bills from her.
Su Yuxi took the phone and said softly, "Thank you."
She took her phone and walked to the side. She had learned her lesson last time and memorized Wan Qianqian's phone number when she got home, just in case. And now it came in handy.
She dialed the number she had memorized, but the call was immediately disconnected with a beep.
Puzzled, she tried several more times, but still couldn't get through.
As she was wondering what was going on, the boy came over and took her phone. When he saw the number she had dialed, he looked at her like she was an idiot for three seconds.
Su Yuxi found this person inexplicable, and then she saw the boy enter a few numbers unrelated to the number on his phone, and then dial Wan Qianqian's number. Sure enough, this time a dial tone sounded.
Unfortunately, no one answered the phone.
She tried several times, but still couldn't get through.
Su Yuxi paced anxiously in circles: "Qianqian, answer the phone."
You're driving me crazy!
Under the dim streetlights not far away, several burly black men staggered over, supporting each other. They were holding bottles of liquor and uttering indistinct curses and boisterous laughter, which sounded particularly jarring in the quiet alley.
The boy's eyes flashed with disgust when he saw these people. He zipped up his bag, snatched the phone back from Su Yuxi's hand, returned the fifty yuan to her, and kindly warned her, "If you don't want to die, get out of here."
After leaving those words, he picked up his things and left.
Before Su Yuxi could react to what he meant, the group of black men walked up to her.
Her appearance and clothing were too eye-catching. They noticed the girl from afar, and seeing that she was a beauty, their eyes flashed with greed and malice.
"Hey, baby, how much for one night?"
Su Yuxi frowned. She didn't understand and didn't want to pay attention to this group of drunkards. They stank horribly, like rats in a sewer, their whole bodies reeking of stench.
She turned to leave.
But they weren't about to let the young woman from the East leave so easily. The group scattered and surrounded her, their faces showing wicked smiles.
"Don't go, stay and play with the brothers!"
Su Yuxi felt even more disgusted, and her fist clenched at her side. Just as she was about to kick them away, a black man was suddenly attacked. He was kicked hard, lost his balance, and fell hard into the arms of one of his companions.
Before Su Yuxi could even see what was happening, her wrist was grabbed and she was pulled by a strong force, rushing out of the crowd and desperately moving forward.
The people behind him were cursing and swearing loudly as they staggered after him. They had already drunk quite a bit, and several of them fell down after running for a few minutes.
Some of them probably didn't drink much, but they chased after the enemy very quickly.
But they ran fast too. The boy had already developed a fast running speed, and Su Yuxi was also quite fast. Before long, the two of them disappeared from the sight of the group of people behind them.
The boy pulled Su Yuxi to a secluded corner, threw the large bag he was carrying to the ground, and braced himself on his knees, his chest heaving as he gasped for breath.
When he had recovered, he looked up and saw Su Yuxi with a calm expression, without the slightest panic. Even her long hair remained unchanged, still as beautiful as ever, as if the chase just now had nothing to do with her.
The boy stared at her with wide eyes, swallowed hard, and asked in a hoarse voice, "Aren't you tired?"
Su Yuxi shook her head, not even knowing why he ran away. If those men were really that bad, why not just beat them up? There were no security cameras here, why exhaust himself like this?
The boy took a deep breath, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and picked up his backpack: "Alright, it's not safe here. If there's nothing else, you should leave now."
This was his last friendly piece of advice; he would never help her again if it happened again.
"Oh, thank you," Su Yuxi said casually.
The boy gave her a strange look, then ignored the rich young lady, picked up his things, and turned to leave.
Su Yuxi had no destination and didn't know where to go. She watched the boy's figure disappear around the corner, then slowly squatted down, a sense of frustration creeping over her: she couldn't get through to Qianqian on the phone, what should she do, and where should she go?
Just as she was wondering where to go, a pair of black sneakers stopped in front of her. She thought it was someone looking for trouble again. She was already annoyed, so she decided to take it out on this person.
When he looked up, he saw it was the boy who had just left.
The boy didn't know what had gotten into him, but he was worried that a girl he didn't trust would be dragged away here. Perhaps it was his humanity that hadn't been completely extinguished that was causing him to come back.
"Have you forgotten the way home? Do you want me to take you?"
This was the greatest act of kindness he had ever shown in his life; he admitted that he had taken the wrong medicine that day.
Su Yuxi shook her head, wondering why he had returned: "I have no home."
Just because she said those four words, the boy, in a moment of madness, took Su Yuxi back to his residence.
He didn't believe Su Yuxi didn't have a family. Someone who couldn't speak a foreign language and dressed so beautifully was probably a young lady from a wealthy family who had gotten separated from her family or had run away from home.
Regardless, he would at least do himself some good karma by taking her away from this cannibalistic den of demons and letting her leave after daybreak.
Su Yuxi stood in the slightly cramped living room and looked around. It was a typical two-bedroom apartment. Although the room was small, it was spotless and exuded warmth and cleanliness.
After the boy brought his men in, he left her there, then went into the kitchen and started banging on things. Soon after, the aroma of food wafted over.
