Having been given a second chance at life, Wenxi didn't want to become an unfortunate passerby like in the original story. If she could find a good love to accompany her on her journey of building her career, she would consider this life worthwhile.
When they arrived at the place where everyone had gone to the market, Wen Xi hurriedly said, "He Chen'an, stop here, I'll get off here."
He Chen'an put both feet on the ground and stopped the bicycle.
Wenxi jumped down, went to the back to get the basket, and then carried it across the road to the countryside. She turned around and waved to He Chen'an, saying, "Go back now! Be careful riding your bike."
He Chen'an didn't look away until he could no longer see Wen Xi's figure. He then rode his bicycle back home at breakneck speed, leaving a trail of sparks and lightning in his wake.
We still need to find out about work as soon as possible and get Wenxi transferred to the county town so they'll have time to spend together and date.
With He Chen'an escorting her all the way, Wen Xi arrived at the Harvest Brigade before noon. Wen Xi went home first, took a basket of wild vegetables from the system warehouse, handed them over to the pigsty, and then went to the canteen.
It wasn't time to cook yet; everyone was doing the preliminary preparations.
Seeing the dried fish drying in the open space outside the cafeteria, Wenxi walked over and touched them. They were ready to be processed. Today at noon, she would make a spicy dried fish dish for everyone, which would be both delicious and appetizing.
Seeing Wen Xi return, Shen Jiaojiao hurriedly came forward, took Wen Xi's arm, and said with a smile, "Xiao Xi, you're back."
"I'll give it to you when I get back," Wenxi said softly.
When they woke up in the morning and found the bamboo shoots were gone, they could probably guess that she had taken them to exchange for money.
Shen Jiaojiao was overjoyed. "Today, the brigade leader brought back a set of pig offal. We had dried fish for lunch, so we'll save the pig offal for dinner."
Wenxi nodded and carried the dried fish into the dining hall. When she saw the smelly pig offal in the bamboo basket, Wenxi's expression turned somewhat unpleasant.
Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue were busy preparing the ingredients, while Wang Xiaoju and Sun Mei only needed to cook. After rinsing the rice, putting it in the pot, and starting the fire, they didn't need to keep an eye on things. One of them could even take a break to clean the pig offal, but...
Wen Xi pouted, put down the dried fish and the basket, and together with Shen Jiaojiao, carried the pig offal to the river bend. Then she put the bamboo basket directly into the water and left it to soak. "Jiaojiao, let's not wash the pig offal for now. We'll wash it this afternoon. You stay here and catch fish. I'm going back to cook."
As soon as the pig offal was put into the water, the oil splattered everywhere, and then schools of small fish swam over. Wenxi didn't plan to cook the small fish she caught for everyone; she planned to dry them and preserve them for the three sisters to eat themselves.
Wenxi returned to the canteen, took out the piece of pork fat from her basket, and rendered it in an iron pot. She asked Jiang Yue to watch over it, and then started cooking. The first dish was spicy dried anchovies. The dried anchovies, which were already half-dried, wouldn't break no matter how much she turned them. They were quite chewy when cooked!
When it was time to eat, everyone lined up to get their food. Liang Zhaodi looked at the clean and tidy Wenxi, and then at herself covered in mud, and felt terrible.
However, Wenxi traded a large wild boar for the jobs of cutting pig feed and cooking, and even received commendation and praise from her superiors, leaving Wenxi with nothing to do.
She was certain that if she tried anything underhanded with Wenxi, she would be in deep trouble.
However, she is now pregnant, so all she needs to do is protect Lu Xiaoyun. When the Lu family arranges for Lu Xiaoyun to return to the city, he will definitely take her with him. At that time, she and Wen Xi, this peasant, will be from completely different worlds.
Thinking of this, Liang Zhaodi gave Wen Xi an arrogant look.
The man Chu Wan'er married had three sons, who were quite mischievous. Chu Wan'er had to work and do housework, taking care of the three children during the day and the old man at night. She was exhausted and looked like she had aged ten years compared to before. She was tanned and haggard, and had lost all her beauty. Now she looked quite well-matched with the old man.
Chu Wan'er had long regretted it and had even gone to see Qian Qiusheng. After all, Qian Qiusheng was younger and had better conditions, and most importantly, he didn't have three sons to burden them. However, when he saw the haggard Chu Wan'er, Qian Qiusheng didn't feel sorry for her; instead, he sobered up. He didn't understand how he had been bewitched by such a woman and ended up dumping his fiancée of two years.
Now, comparing the two of them side by side, Chu Wan'er is not even as good as one of his fiancées' fingers. However, his ex-fiancée doesn't give him any chance. Since they separated, he hasn't even seen her face.
"It smells so good, Comrade Wen, is this rendering lard?" The aroma of rendering lard is particularly strong; you can smell it as soon as you enter the door, but some people just don't say anything!
While serving the dishes, Wenxi said with a smile, "Yes, I went to the pork stall early this morning and bought five catties of pork fat. I'll use it to fry everyone's stir-fries tonight."
"Xiaoxi, did you buy this pork fat?" Lin Yiwan asked curiously.
"Yes, I bought it with my own money. I just wanted everyone to be able to eat some oily food, so I bought pork fat with my own money. I don't know if Captain Qian would be willing to give me a few work points in return."
Wen Xi understood Lin Yiwan's intention to help her, so she followed up on Lin Yiwan's words, letting everyone know that she had paid for the pork fat, and that the rendered pork fat and pork cracklings belonged to her. She could distribute them however she wanted, and no one should covet her things.
Sure enough, upon hearing this, everyone suppressed their ulterior motives. Since Wenxi had bought the pork fat herself, they really had no right to demand a piece of it.
Everyone lined up to get their food, then found seats to sit down and eat. When they tasted the spicy dried fish, everyone's eyes lit up. The people at the educated youth settlement already knew that Wenxi was a good cook on the first day of spring plowing, and now they were even more impressed by her cooking skills. They immediately regretted not befriending Wenxi properly back then.
Song Lan, Zhou Bai, and Tian Shengnan were the smartest; they quickly built a good relationship with Wen Xi so they could enjoy her cooking often in the future.
After the meal, the dining hall quieted down. Wenxi and Jiangyue looked at the lard, since both lard and pork cracklings were valuable. Wenxi was also worried that someone might steal it. Afterwards, Wenxi took some wood ash and went with Shen Jiaojiao to the river bend to clean the pig offal. There was also some pig offal in the bamboo basket to attract wild small fish.
Wenxi decided to take the small fish she caught today home so that the three sisters could eat them themselves.
