Chapter 22 Taking Advantage of the Situation

“Liang, Nie, you say Wen stole your things, but you need to make a list of what you’ve lost before you can search us, right? You haven’t even figured it out yourselves, how can you search us? First, make a list of everyone’s missing items!”

Wenxi and her two companions were much more reliable than the others, so Captain Qian naturally trusted them. However, he couldn't directly defend them; they had to provide evidence first.

"Captain Qian, I'm short ten yuan." Liang Zhaodi was a little uneasy, but the thought that as long as she was allowed into the courtyard, she could successfully frame Wen Xi made her more determined.

"Captain Qian, my watch is missing." Nie Xiulan looked at Wen Xi's wrist, her eyes gleaming with a determined light. Today, she was determined to make sure that Wen Xi was a thief.

"Captain Qian, I lost fifty yuan." Xu Huaying also joined in the fun.

Seeing this, Chu Wan'er hurriedly said, "I lost a bag of grain."

Wenxi and the others have just arrived, so they must have borrowed some food from the team. It would be good if they could get a bag of food, so she could eat a little more at each meal.

Captain Qian nodded. "I know what you lost, but we can't just say that Wen Zhiqing stole it. You need to provide evidence to prove that the items are yours. Nie Zhiqing, please tell me the brand of the watch, the markings on it, and please provide the invoice for the watch."

"And Liang and Xu, please think about it too. What are the denominations of the money you lost? What numbers are on each bill? The numbers on each bill are different. We can't just take other people's money and say it's yours, can we?"

"Chu, what kind of bag did you use to store your grain? What color and material was the rope used to tie the bag opening?"

Captain Qian's words caused the three women's expressions to change. This was a fabricated story, so how were they supposed to provide evidence?

Just then, a clear bicycle bell rang out. Everyone turned to look and saw five police officers riding bicycles towards them. The bicycles stopped only a meter away from them. Yan Zheng shone his flashlight over everyone and asked, "What happened over here?"

Captain Qian was so nervous that sweat beaded on his forehead. "Officer, nothing has happened here. It's just a minor matter. Please don't trouble yourself."

For the sake of the village's reputation, the village officials wanted to keep the peace no matter what happened. However, Wenxi had suffered enough grievances in her previous life and was unwilling to suffer these undeserved grievances again in this life because of others.

"Officers, I need to report a case." Wen Xi said hurriedly, "Officers, you've come at just the right time. I just needed to report a case. Three educated youths here have falsely accused me of stealing their things. I hope you can help me. I came to the countryside to support rural development, not to be framed and slandered."

When Yan Zheng and his colleagues arrived, Wen Xi immediately reported the situation truthfully: "Nie Xiulan, a former educated youth, falsely accused me of stealing her new watch; Liang Zhaodi, another former educated youth, falsely accused me of stealing ten yuan from her; Xu Huaying, a former educated youth, falsely accused me of stealing fifty yuan from her; and Chu Wan'er, another former educated youth, falsely accused me of stealing a bag of grain from her. They insisted on searching my house without my permission. I asked them to empty their pockets before going in, but they refused. Officers, I would like to request that you conduct a professional search to clear my name. Otherwise, I will be too ashamed to face anyone in the team."

“Comrade, if you have truly been framed, we will naturally clear your name and give you justice. As for the person who framed you, we will take them away and punish them severely.” Yan Zheng stood there, his tall stature and powerful aura making everyone’s hearts tremble. Yan Zheng pointed to two colleagues and said, “You two go and ask the three people who lost their items what they lost.”

"Yes." The two comrades received the order and walked towards Nie Xiulan and the other two.

Nie Xiulan took a few steps back in fear. "Wen Zhiqing didn't steal my watch. I wanted her watch. I wanted to send her to a hardship area so that Lu Xiaoyun wouldn't see her again, because Lu Xiaoyun is mine."

Upon hearing Nie Xiulan's words, the surrounding villagers were in an uproar, never expecting the truth to be like this.

“Nie Zhiqing, since Lu Xiaoyun is yours, then stay with him and don’t let him harm others. It was just that Lu Xiaoyun glanced at me during dinner, and you’re framing me like this? You’ve been here for two years now. In these two years, have you framed other people?”

Wen Xi stared intently into Nie Xiulan's eyes. Unexpectedly, the system was quite effective; it actually managed to get Nie Xiulan to tell the truth.

Nie Xiulan shook her head.

Xu Huaying quickly waved her hand, "Wen Zhiqing didn't steal my money. I don't have any money at all. I just saw that Wen Zhiqing bought a house in the team and thought she was rich, so I wanted to swindle some money from her!"

Chu Wan'er and Liang Zhaodi quickly nodded in agreement. To be honest, they just wanted to take advantage of the situation, while Nie Xiulan wanted to send Wenxi to a more difficult place.

Yan Zheng said seriously, "Take the person to the police station and investigate this matter thoroughly."

So several people stepped forward, each handcuffing one of Nie Xiulan, Xu Huaying, Liang Zhaodi, and Chu Wan'er, and pushed them toward the bicycle.

“Wen Zhiqing…” Captain Qian hurriedly looked at Wen Xi, his unspoken words all in his eyes.

Wen Xi understood what he meant; Captain Qian didn't want to escalate the situation.

“Captain Qian, I know you want to resolve this privately, but I came to the countryside to support rural development, not to be wronged, slandered, and mistreated. If you help them today, what about us victims? How can we trust you in the future?”

Actually, this isn't a big deal. The four of them won't be severely punished. At most, their reputations will suffer, but after a while, everyone will forget about it.

Wen Xi's words were also a hint to Captain Qian that it was not impossible for him to let the four of them go, but it would depend on how attractive the offer from Captain Qian was.

But what if they come back and do it again if we don't punish them severely?

“No matter who makes a mistake, they must be severely punished. These girls made a mistake, so they naturally must be severely punished as well. How about this, I will punish Nie Xiulan and Xu Huaying by carrying manure for a year, and Liang Zhaodi and Chu Wan'er by cleaning the pigsty for a year. If they make a mistake again, they can be sent back. Is that okay?”

"Captain Qian, what about the injustice I suffered today and the damage to my reputation?" Captain Qian was naturally satisfied with their punishment, but many people had already prejudicially assumed she was a thief. Shouldn't we clear her name?
