Chapter 30 Fish Strips

Shen Jiaojiao nodded, "I understand. I hate scum like Lu Xiaoyun. I feel disgusted just talking to him. I won't pay any attention to him."

Afterwards, under Shen Jiaojiao's cover, Wenxi retreated behind the thorn bushes. Once everyone had walked away, she turned and ran in the opposite direction, quickly disappearing into the woods.

No wonder no one catches the fish in that river anymore. Apparently, nobody knows there's a river there. Everyone usually runs in the opposite direction. I guess apart from the hunters in the village, nobody knows there's a river in the valley. That's great, then all the aquatic resources in that river will be hers.

Wenxi jogged along the way today, which saved a lot of time compared to walking slowly before. It only took him a little over two hours to reach the waterfall.

She quickly tried to lift the fish trap, but it was too heavy to budge. Wenxi had no choice but to put it in the system's storage. When she saw that the long fish trap was full of white fish, just like the spectacular winter fishing, Wenxi was shocked. But she didn't have time to be shocked, so she quickly emptied the fish, added two earthworms to the trap, and threw it back into the river.

The river is so far from her home, which has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that no one else has discovered this place, and all the fish in the river belong to her. The disadvantage is that it's not easy to come here. Once she starts working, she won't be able to come here anymore. She can only wait until spring to see if she can apply to cut pig feed, so she can live on the mountain every day.

Wenxi then collected the fish from another fish and shrimp net, and then picked out ten large silver carp weighing about one pound each from the warehouse, put them in a basket, put the basket in the warehouse, and jogged back home.

The round trip took four or five hours. The people who came to the mountain to collect firewood had long since gone back and wouldn't be waiting for her. Since Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue had to cover for her, they naturally followed everyone down the mountain early.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Wenxi found a secluded spot behind a tree, took out the basket containing fish and firewood, and then carried the basket home.

Seeing Shen Jiaojiao standing by the courtyard gate, looking anxiously waiting, Wen Xi quickly pushed her inside and then closed the gate.

When Shen Jiaojiao saw that Wen Xi had returned unharmed, she finally felt relieved. "Xiao Xi, you're finally back. Do you know how worried I was about you?"

"Don't worry about me. These are small hills, not a continuous mountain range. There won't be any jackals, tigers, or leopards here." Wenxi put down the basket, removed the firewood from it, revealing the white fish. "Look what I brought back for you!"

When Jiang Yue saw Wen Xi return, she quickly ran over to check. She was overjoyed to see so many big fish inside, and even swallowed hard in an exaggerated manner.

Although fish is cheaper than meat, it still costs five or six cents a pound in the city, and you need fish coupons to buy it. Sometimes when the family buys a fish to improve their meals, Jiang Yue can only eat a few bites, and Shen Jiaojiao is even worse off; she can't even afford to eat fish.

Because all the money and tickets in her family were in her grandmother's hands, and her grandmother used them to subsidize her own family and uncles in the countryside, she would not treat her granddaughter Sun Jiaojiao any better.

Other people's boys are better and more important to her than her own granddaughter.

Seeing their exaggerated swallowing, Wenxi gave them a piece of her mind, saying, "Is it really necessary to be so dramatic? Since we went to the countryside, have we not eaten meat every day?"

We get an egg every day, and yesterday we even had pork belly and rice with every meal. You could say our life now is probably better than it was in the city before, since supplies were rationed there.

Jiang Yue covered her head and smiled sheepishly, "That's different!"

"You two clean the fish, I'll cook it for you tonight," Wen Xi instructed, then went to the kitchen, grabbed a plate, and went next door to find Chang Qingqing. "Sister, do you have any pickled vegetables made from cabbage or radish greens?"

"Yes, I'll pack it for you." Without asking, Chang Qingqing knew she was there to exchange for pickled vegetables, so she took the plate from her and went to the kitchen to pack the pickled vegetables for her.

A little while later, she brought out a plate of pickled vegetables that looked so delicious it made your mouth water. Wenxi quickly took it with both hands, "Thank you, sister. I'll bring you some good food tonight."

"If you need anything, just come find me. Don't be shy," Chang Qingqing said.

"Thank you so much, sister. I don't know how to repay you. If you don't mind, you can let me teach Yuanyuan and Huihui to read and write, since I only have a high school diploma."

Chang Qingqing was overjoyed. "Great! Thank you, Xiaoxi. I'll tell Yuanyuan and Huihui about this when they get back."

Wenxi hadn't expected Chang Qingqing to be so enlightened. She said she would teach Yuanyuan and Huihui to read and write, and Chang Qingqing immediately agreed. Others would have said that if reading and writing were useful, why would they need to go to the countryside?

Wenxi returned with pickled vegetables. Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue were processing fish by the well. One was responsible for scaling and gutting the fish, while the other was responsible for cleaning them. Wenxi instructed, "Remove the gills as well, so you can eat the fish head. The fish head is also a very delicious thing."

"Understood." Jiang Yue waved to Wen Xi.

Wenxi returned to the kitchen, put down the pickled vegetables, and took out the lunch that Wen had left in the pot to eat: a bowl of sweet potato rice and a bowl of shredded potatoes. She was more active than the others, so she was naturally hungry.

After eating and drinking her fill, Wenxi washed the pots and pans and then went to the yard to check the chicken coop. Since it was built at night and it was hard to see clearly, she needed to check for any problems and make adjustments as needed.

Wen Xi walked around the chicken coop. Jin Changfeng's craftsmanship was really good. The chicken coop was built perfectly, and there was nothing wrong with it.

Now all they have to do is wait for Aunt Meihua to bring the chicks over in the spring.

After taking a stroll in the yard, Wenxi poured herself a cup of hot water and went back to her room. It was still early before she could make dinner, so she could rest for a while.

After running around in the mountains for several hours and having just eaten, Wenxi felt sleepy and soon fell asleep.

After waking up from a nap, Wenxi lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, quietly thinking that it would be so great if she didn't have to work and could relax like this every day.

Unfortunately, that's impossible. Not to mention the beginning of spring, we'll have to work even at the end of the year. We'll probably have to start work once all the snow in the wheat fields has melted.

After a while, Wenxi got up. After drinking a glass of warm water, she felt much more awake and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
