Chapter 4: Propose Separate Living Arrangements

Fang Chengxin pointed to the tractor parked next to him and said, "Get on the tractor, and we'll set off once everyone is seated."

"Thank you." After expressing his gratitude, Jin Changfeng boarded the tractor first and asked Zhao Jianguo to hand him everyone's luggage. He arranged the luggage and then reached out his hand to Wen Xi, "Comrade Wen, come on, let me pull you."

He was a great soldier, so Wenxi didn't think much of it and simply reached out her hand. Jin Changfeng grasped Wenxi's cool little hand and pulled her onto the tractor.

Jin Changfeng was overjoyed to hold Wen Xi's hand. Her hand was so soft and smooth, as if boneless. But as soon as they got on the tractor, Wen Xi let go of his hand, leaving him feeling disappointed. He really wanted to hold her hand forever.

Everyone got on the tractor and waited for a while. Several other educated youths arrived. After Fang Chengxin called out their names to make sure everyone was there, he got on the tractor and drove everyone away.

There was too much luggage on the tractor, and there was nowhere to sit, so everyone had to stand on the tractor. The cold wind blew in our faces, down our necks, and into our chests, making it feel icy cold. Moreover, the wind filled our noses, making it difficult to breathe.

Suddenly, Wen Xi was surprised to find that the wind seemed to have stopped and her breathing was not so difficult. When she looked up, she saw Jin Changfeng standing in front of her, shielding her from the biting cold wind.

Just as Wen Xi was about to thank him, she was suddenly bumped hard from behind, causing her to fall forward and into Jin Changfeng's arms.

Jin Changfeng quickly reached out to support Wen Xi. Once Wen Xi was steady, he asked worriedly, "Comrade Wen, are you alright?"

The road conditions were bad, so it's no one else's fault but ours. After all, everyone was unsteady on their feet, and it's normal to wobble around like that.

Wen Xi shook her head. "I'm fine. How about you? Did I hurt you?"

Jin Changfeng really wanted to say, "You didn't hurt me, you crashed into my heart," but he was afraid of scaring her, since it was only the second day since they met.

After that, everyone struggled to stay upright, their toes curled inside their shoes, trying to grip the tractor tightly with their toes, afraid that such an embarrassing incident would happen again.

Half an hour later, the tractor stopped in the courtyard of the commune office building. Everyone got off the tractor, their legs felt weak, and they all groaned and complained.

Several oxcarts were already waiting in the courtyard, sent by various production teams to pick up the educated youth.

Jin Changfeng put down Wen Xi's canvas bag, went inside for a moment, and then came out again. Judging from the upturned corners of his mouth, he was in a good mood at the moment.

Fang Chengxin took out the list of educated youth from the educated youth office, took a roll call, and found that some people were missing, so he marked them with an X.

Then the assignments began. Wen Xi, Shen Jiaojiao, Jiang Yue, Song Lan, and Zhou Bai were assigned to the Harvest Brigade, just like in their previous lives. Fang Chengxin handed the list to the captain of the Harvest Brigade and said to Wen Xi and the others, "This is Captain Qian of your Harvest Brigade. You can go to the brigade with him!"

Captain Qian spotted Jin Changfeng and Zhao Jianguo, who were carrying canvas bags, following behind the five educated youths. Just as he was about to say something, he saw Jin Changfeng shake his head at him, so he didn't waste any time.

Jin Changfeng and Zhao Jianguo put everyone's luggage on the oxcart, and then the two of them went to the side to talk.

Zhao Jianguo patted Jin Changfeng on the chest, "Changfeng, you haven't really fallen for Comrade Wen, have you!"

"Hmm." Jin Changfeng succinctly admitted, then looked at Wen Xi with a smile in his eyes, "Don't talk nonsense when you get back to the village, or don't blame me for dealing with you."

Zhao Jianguo chuckled sheepishly, “Such a joyous occasion should definitely be announced by you yourself. I absolutely won’t say a word more than necessary.”

Jin Changfeng gave Zhao Jianguo a threatening look, implying that if he broke his promise, he wouldn't be polite.

After taking attendance, Captain Qian looked at everyone carefully to make sure he remembered them, and then said, "Our Harvest Brigade is not far from the commune, less than two hours away. It's still early, so we'll be going back in a while. If you need anything, you can buy it now. If you don't want to buy it today, you can come back tomorrow."

Song Lan hurriedly said, "Captain Qian, I'll go to the post office to pick up the package. Please wait for me a little longer."

Captain Qian nodded. "Go!"

"Thank you, Captain Qian." Song Lan hurriedly thanked him and turned to leave. Zhou Bai felt embarrassed to stay with the three girls, so he caught up with Song Lan, intending to help her later.

Captain Qian looked at the five delicate-skinned children. Although he was not happy, their well-behaved manners made his displeasure disappear.

It doesn't matter if they can't do things properly, as long as they don't cause trouble. That was his only requirement for them, but none of the young people who came before could do it.

Shen Jiaojiao happily hugged Wen Xi's arm and said with a smile, "Xiao Xi, it's so great that we're assigned to the same place."

Wen Xi nodded thoughtfully. Everything else was fine, but if she went there, she would meet those people from her past life, and then...

Wenxi shook her head, deciding not to think about these things anymore. She would deal with whatever came her way, and even if things got really bad, it wouldn't be as terrible as in her previous life.

Then Wenxi opened her smallest canvas bag, took out six coarse grain steamed buns, put them in an oil paper bag, added ten White Rabbit milk candies, and secretly slipped them to Captain Qian.

"Captain Qian, this is Wenxi. Some people from our neighborhood have been sent to the countryside, so we know a little about what's going on there. The educated youth come from all over the country, with different lifestyles and languages. It's easy for conflicts to arise when there are too many people. So we'd like to rent an empty house in the brigade so we can live there and cook for ourselves. I wonder if the Fengshou Brigade has any empty houses?"

When Captain Qian saw the steamed buns inside, he wanted to refuse, but he still swallowed his saliva without any self-respect. "There are indeed two houses in the village where no one has died, and you can stay there. As long as you are not afraid, you can choose a house to stay in when we get to the village."

"Thank you, Captain Qian. We'll buy the house directly. If we go home in the future, we'll return the house to the village. We'll need Captain Qian's help with the paperwork." There were too many people at the educated youth settlement, and it was a large communal dormitory with no privacy at all. I suffered a lot living there for two years in my previous life.

Now that she has a sign-in system, how can she get special treatment if she lives in a crowded place?

She only wanted to give special lessons to Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue; everyone else was irrelevant to her.

Seeing how sensible the girl was, Captain Qian was quite satisfied. "Comrade Wen, don't worry, I promise I'll take care of everything for you. If you need anything in the village in the future, remember to come to me or your aunt."
