Chapter 6 Settling In

"Comrade, if you don't want your butt anymore, I'll cut it off and stew it to feed the dogs, how about that?" Wen Xi turned her head and looked at Mo Qiaolin, who was messing around beside her, with a cold gaze.

This is utterly baffling!

If you want to seduce a man but he doesn't take the bait, why get angry with him?

Mo Qiaolin was about to retort when she felt a cold, piercing gaze. She looked up and saw Jin Changfeng staring at her with an icy expression. Startled, she shrank back and didn't dare say anything more or make any further moves.

Bumping along in the oxcart, Wenxi quickly became drowsy. Just as she was about to fall asleep, the oxcart finally arrived at the village office of Fengshou Brigade.

Mo Qiaolin got off the oxcart, snorted coldly at Wen Xi and the other two, and quickly left. Wen Xi touched her nose, thinking that this woman was really crazy.

None of the three of them know her, okay?

"This is the village office of Fengshou Brigade. If you need anything in the future, you can come to the village office to find the village cadres. Of course, you can also go directly to the village cadres' homes." Captain Qian drove the oxcart to the village office, let Song Lan and Zhou Bai take down their luggage, and then whispered to Jin Changfeng, "Changfeng, could you please take the two male educated youths to the educated youth settlement?"

"Let Jianguo take them, I have other things to do." Jin Changfeng refused. He was too lazy to go to the educated youth settlement. It was right that Wenxi and the other two didn't stay there.

"Jianguo, take these two male educated youths to the educated youth settlement," Captain Qian instructed. "Educated youth Song and Zhou, you go to the educated youth settlement first and settle in. Come to the village office this afternoon to collect your grain."

After Zhao Jianguo left with Song Lan and Zhou Bai, Captain Qian drove the oxcart to take Wen Xi, Shen Jiaojiao, and Jiang Yue directly to the village, where he showed them the two empty houses of families who had died out.

After looking at the houses, Wenxi chose the last empty courtyard at the foot of the mountain.

It's convenient to get up the mountain here, and there's a well in the yard. Most importantly, the yard wall is made of stone, which is sturdier than the fences used by other people. Another thing is that the neighbors on both sides are nice people, so if the smell of meat wafts out of the house, no one will say anything.

Although she only stayed in the village for two years in her previous life, she still understood the character of a small portion of the villagers.

They spent 100 yuan to buy the house, completed the formalities, and the house became theirs.

Afterwards, Captain Qian called a few people from the village to clean the house. They would get work points for it, so everyone was very enthusiastic. In less than half an hour, the house was cleaned inside and out, and even the weeds in the yard were removed.

Wenxi handed out two milk candies to each of them. "Uncles, thank you for your hard work. Otherwise, we definitely wouldn't have a place to rest tonight. Here are two candies to sweeten your mouths. Please don't think it's too little!"

Although the cleaning team would give them some work points for helping with the cleaning, they still wanted to thank everyone.

Everyone took the candy and stuffed it into their pockets, intending to take it home for their children to try.

"Wen, Shen, and Jiang, please settle in first. I'll bring your rations over shortly," Captain Qian said, then drove the oxcart away.

Captain Qian originally wanted them to go to the village office to pick it up themselves in the afternoon, but considering that they had a lot of things to do and probably couldn't leave, he decided to deliver it to them instead.

It wouldn't be difficult for him to drive the oxcart, and Wen Zhiqing had given him so many steamed buns and White Rabbit milk candies, so he should help out.

Jin Changfeng carried Wen Xi's luggage in and placed it on the floor of the main room before leaving. Wen Xi didn't even have a chance to say thank you. She didn't know if she would ever see him again, and she felt really bad if she didn't thank him, since he had helped her a lot today.

Wen Xi also found it strange. In her previous life, she had spent two years in the countryside here and had never heard of Jin Changfeng and Zhao Jianguo. She had no idea where these two people came from.

However, since he is a soldier, he is naturally not a bad person.

Just as Wenxi was packing her luggage, there was a knock on the door. Wenxi quickly went out and saw Zhao Zhiping from next door pushing a large pile of furniture back on a wooden cart. "Wen, I only bought some of the furniture for you. The carpenter said he would deliver the rest to you after he finished making it."

Just now, when Captain Qian asked everyone to come and clean the house, he asked Zhao Zhiping to go to the carpenter's house to buy furniture for them. After all, there was no furniture in the house, and if they didn't buy furniture, they wouldn't even have a place to sleep at night.

"Thank you, Uncle Zhao." Wen Xi quickly went over to help. After Zhao Zhiping parked the wooden cart, she quickly stepped forward to move the furniture down.

The current furniture includes three beds, three mattresses, three washbasins, three bathtubs, three wooden tubs, two cabinets, one washstand, a square dining table with four benches, and three long tables. Although there are still many things missing, Wenxi is content as long as she has a bed to sleep in at night.

After all the furniture was moved into the house, Wenxi counted out the money according to the price of the furniture, handed it to Zhao Zhiping, gave him a handful of White Rabbit milk candies, and asked him to deliver the money to the carpenter's house.

Everyone quickly carried the beds back to their rooms, set them up, and arranged them properly. Then they started making their own beds. Remembering that she hadn't signed in yet, Wenxi hid behind the door and signed in.

Unexpectedly, a six-pound cotton quilt was signed off, and it was even a quilt cover that could be used directly. The quilt cover had a strong vintage feel, so Wenxi didn't have to do anything.

Wenxi was overjoyed and quickly made the bed. First, she laid the mattress on the bed board, then the two old quilts she had brought, followed by the bed sheet. Then she took out the quilts she had signed for and placed them on top as a blanket.

After the bed was made, Wenxi lay down on it and buried her face in the soft, comfortable blankets. In her heart, she kept expressing her gratitude to Captain Qian and the people who helped clean the room and buy the furniture.

Otherwise, with just the three of them, it would take who knows how long to finish cleaning.

After such a long train ride, I'm really exhausted. I can finally get some rest tonight.

Afraid of falling asleep, Wenxi lay on the bed for a while before quickly getting up to pack her things. The sooner she finished packing, the sooner she could rest, and she was sure she would sleep soundly tonight.

Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue were also packing their things in their respective rooms.

Shen Jiaojiao brought the pots and pans she had stolen from home to the kitchen. Wenxi put these things in a wooden basin, carried them to the well, and used a wooden bucket to draw water to wash them so they could be used that night.

The main reason for choosing this place is because there is a well here, making it convenient to use water. I don't have to fetch water myself, and I won't have to worry about others seeing me when I'm cleaning up food at home.
