Chapter 117 Cherishing Life

Wen Xi was slightly taken aback, but then she understood. Once the family reunion banquet was held, they would be real siblings. Her admirers would not be able to make a move on her, since she was her 'sister-in-law'. And the villagers would not dare to do anything to her because of Jin Changfeng, unless they were scoundrels. Scoundrels are not even afraid of the law, so how could they be afraid of Jin Changfeng?

Jin Changfeng is rarely home, and with the emperor far away, who would be afraid of him?

Wen Xi smiled and nodded. "Okay."

Then, Wenxi noticed that the nurse's expression softened a bit. Sure enough, the nurse had just treated her as a rival in love and probably had already thought of countless ways to get rid of her.

She hates people like this the most. They treat others as rivals in love without knowing anything about them, and they want to kill them, acting as if there's only one man in the world and everyone else is trying to take him from her.

"Jianguo, go find Captain Qian and Aunt Meihua for me. Tell them that we're going to have a family reunion banquet with Comrade Wen starting tomorrow at noon, and become sworn siblings. Ask them to come and be our witnesses." Jin Changfeng coughed weakly and said, "Could you please go and buy some meat for me first thing tomorrow morning, and then exchange it for some vegetables at the village's houses?"

Zhao Jianguo nodded, "I understand. Don't worry, I'll make sure your family reunion banquet goes perfectly."

As he spoke, he touched his face. He wasn't bad-looking, so why hadn't any woman possessively claimed him as her own and wouldn't allow anyone else to get close?

He thought Jin Changfeng would be able to win over Comrade Wen, but before he could even start, a roadblock appeared, and neither of them could match her.

After giving the key to Jin Changfeng, Wen Xi went straight back without lingering. Didn't she see how domineeringly the nurse treated Jin Changfeng as her own possession?

Jin Changfeng cannot have even a single female mosquito around him.

Fortunately, she didn't accept Jin Changfeng just because he was handsome and had a good job. Otherwise, she might not even know how she died. It was really terrifying. She never had any intention of dating or getting married in the first place, and now she dared not have any intention of doing so.

After all, life is only once. Cherish life and stay away from men.

The next day was the Lantern Festival. At noon, Wenxi took Shen Jiaojiao and Jiang Yue to a family reunion banquet. There weren't many people, just two tables. At this time, it's not appropriate to hold a grand celebration, no matter what the occasion.

While others performed the rites of marriage before portraits of leaders, Wen Xi and Jin Changfeng performed the rites of brother and sister. With everyone as witnesses, the two became half-siblings with different surnames today.

"Big Brother," Wenxi greeted politely after the ceremony.

Jin Changfeng is older than her second brother, so from now on, Jin Changfeng will be the eldest brother. As for the eldest sister, forget it, she doesn't have a sister who would frame her younger sister.

"Little sister." Jin Changfeng looked at Wenxi and called out gently. Now they could be considered family. He would have a reason to write to Wenxi and send her things in the future.

Wen Xi didn't think too much about it. She just thought of it as playing house with Jin Changfeng. Having another brother wouldn't affect her at all. After all, he was only in name, not on the household register. In the future, if there were any good or bad things, he would ask his real sister Jin Changqing, not her, the fake sister.

However, with this relationship in place, the villagers will have to think twice before trying to scheme against her.

Jin Changfeng and Wen Xi became siblings. Everyone who came to the family reunion banquet congratulated them on becoming a family. Wen Xi even received several red envelopes. Even the nurse who regarded Wen Xi as a rival in love prepared a red envelope for Wen Xi, probably because she felt that Wen Xi's existence posed no threat to her!

Wenxi didn't open the red envelopes in front of everyone, so she didn't know what everyone had given her. After having lunch at Jin Changfeng's house, the three of them went back to the house next door.

Lying in bed that night, Wenxi took out the red envelopes that everyone had given her. Captain Qian, the deputy captain, and the accountant's family all gave her one-yuan red envelopes, while Jin Changfeng's brothers Zhao Jianguo and Zhang Yong each gave her five-yuan red envelopes. Nurse Zhu Ying gave her twenty-yuan red envelopes. She hadn't expected her to be so generous.

Finally, there was the red envelope from Jin Changfeng, which contained fifty yuan. In an era when the average salary was only twenty or thirty yuan, this amount was equivalent to two months' salary for most people. Jin Changfeng was truly generous to his sister who was not related to him by blood.

Once the Lantern Festival (January 15th of the lunar calendar) is over, the New Year is truly over, and preparations for spring plowing will begin immediately. This is not Northeast China, so spring plowing will not start until April or May.

In the central plains region, spring plowing usually begins around March.

Wenxi is busy making money, but doesn't have time to go to the fields every day to earn work points. How can she apply to not have to go to work?

Upon seeing the over 400-pound wild boar stored in the system's warehouse, Wen Xi had a sudden inspiration. She quickly took out paper and pen and began writing an application.

By handing over the wild boar, she naturally wanted to gain some benefits for herself. She wouldn't hand over the wild boar for nothing; otherwise, wouldn't it be better to take it to the black market and exchange it for money?

A big wild boar should be worth several hundred yuan, right?

That morning, Wenxi borrowed a machete and an axe from the village office's tool shed. Then, carrying a basket on her back, she went up the mountain. To avoid revealing the waterfall, Wenxi went in the same direction that the villagers usually went, but she ran a little further ahead.

It wasn't the season for grass to grow and birds to sing yet, so the mountain was still as desolate as in winter. However, many wild vegetables sprouted on the ground, especially shepherd's purse, which was lush and green and looked very fresh and delicious.

Wen Xi found a secluded spot, released the wild boar she had hacked to death from the system warehouse, smeared the boar's blood on her body and face, and also on her machete and axe. Then she hurriedly ran down the mountain, pretending to be terrified.

Wenxi came down the mountain covered in blood and ran wildly through the village, frightening the villagers. They all followed Wenxi, wanting to find out what had happened.

But Wenxi didn't say anything, and just kept running forward as if something terrible was chasing her from behind.

When they arrived at Captain Qian's house, Wenxi leaned against the gate, panting heavily. Aunt Meihua, seeing Wenxi covered in blood and in such a disheveled state, gasped in shock. Walking up to Wenxi, Aunt Meihua's eyes trembled. "Xiaoxi, what happened to you? What happened?"

"Aunt Meihua, is Captain Qian home?" Wenxi asked, sounding listless.

"Yes, yes, I'll go call them for you right away." Aunt Meihua quickly turned back, calling out as she went, "Old Qian, Old Qian, something's happened, come out quickly..."
