Chapter 19 I Became a Beast God in the Beast World (9)
After Zhou Jue finished speaking, looking at the fiery eyes of the beasts, he directly pressed the wooden stick against the dead tree root and began to drill rapidly.
Making fire by friction is much more difficult than imagined.
Zhou Jue was so exhausted that he was covered in sweat and his hands were almost blistered, but only a wisp of smoke escaped from his mouth.
"I'll do it! Master Wu, just spin it like this quickly, right?" Benyue couldn't stand it anymore and snatched the wooden stick. He was strong and fast; the stick spun so fast in his hands that it almost left afterimages.
"It's smoking! It's smoking!"
"Quick! Blow on it!"
Amidst gasps of surprise, a small spark was finally ignited, and then with a "whoosh," it turned into leaping flames.
"It's a success!"
"We actually managed to create fire ourselves!"
A deafening cheer erupted from the tribe, more excited than if they had killed a ferocious beast. This meant they no longer had to worry about their fire going out, and that they had finally gained control of warmth and light.
The old chieftain was so moved that tears welled up in his eyes. Looking at the newly kindled flames, he seemed to see the hope for the tribe's future.
Zhou Jue smiled with satisfaction. Although the process was tortuous, the goal was achieved. She instructed Benyue to teach this skill to all the strong orcs in the tribe; everyone had to master it.
Those who are not very strong, well... those who want to learn can also learn!
The next day, Zhou Jue led the collection team out again.
This time, she set her sights on a more remote mountain valley. According to Grey Ear, the soil there was moist, and perhaps she could find something different.
In the team, Xiaobai and Luoying are still the main force. They can now identify most of the plants that were taught yesterday.
"Lord Wu, look, it's an amethyst flower!"
"There are golden vines here!"
Zhou Jue nodded in satisfaction; the feeling of passing on knowledge filled her with a sense of accomplishment.
"Everyone spread out, be careful, and look for some plants we haven't seen before," Zhou Jue instructed.
The team quickly dispersed and searched carefully in the ravine.
"Lord Wu! Come and see!" Giant Tooth shouted in a gruff voice, his voice tinged with excitement.
Zhou Jue strode over and saw that the giant tooth was pointing at a patch of green vines. The plant had heart-shaped leaves and small, pale purple flowers. Hmm, it was a plant he had never seen before.
Before Zhou Jue could even have the system perform the test, Giant Tooth quickly added,
"Look at its roots!" he said, using a stone knife to dig into the soil beneath the vines.
As the soil was turned over, a cluster of oval-shaped, yellowish-brown lumps of varying sizes was revealed.
Zhou Jue's heart skipped a beat.
This...this is just a potato!
She immediately squatted down, picked one up, and examined it closely. Both its shape and texture were exactly like the potatoes she knew.
"Brother Tongzi, get the test done quickly!" she excitedly cried out in her mind.
[Detection in progress... Detection complete.]
[Species Name: Sweet Potato. Edible, rich in starch and trace elements, non-toxic. Characteristics: High yield, highly adaptable, and easy to store.]
"That's great!" Zhou Jue almost jumped up.
This is practically the beastman version of a potato! It's a god-tier crop that can completely solve the problem of food and clothing! With it, the rabbit-beastman tribe will never have to worry about going hungry during the cold season again!
"Giant Tooth, how did you discover it?" Zhou Jue looked at Giant Tooth, his eyes full of admiration.
Giant Tooth scratched his head憨厚ly: "I've eaten this leaf before, it's not good, but Master Wu said he wanted to collect things he hadn't seen before, and seeing this reminded me of it. I originally wanted to dig one up to show Master Wu, but when the roots came out, I didn't expect there to be so many clods of soil. I almost threw the clods of soil away."
Zhou Jue felt a wave of fear; he had almost missed out on such an important crop.
"Quickly! Dig up all the sweet potatoes around here! Remember, don't damage the vines, we're taking them back!" Zhou Jue immediately ordered.
"yes!"
Although no one understood why Master Wu was so agitated, they immediately got to work. Soon, they dug up a large pile of sweet potatoes, enough to fill three large baskets.
Upon returning to the tribe, Zhou Jue immediately instructed his people to build a bonfire.
"Master Witch, are these mud lumps you brought back edible?" an orc asked curiously.
"Of course you can eat it, and it's delicious!" Zhou Jue smiled mysteriously.
She directed her people to wash the sweet potatoes clean. Some were thrown directly into the fire to roast, while the rest were cut into chunks and skewered with the remaining meat to roast. Actually, they would also taste good boiled, but they didn't have a pot!
Before long, a scent mingled with the fragrance of earth and the aroma of charred starch wafted from the fire. The skewers and meat, too, emitted an enticing aroma.
"It smells so good!"
What is this smell?
The beastmen's mouths were practically watering.
When the first roasted sweet potato was peeled open, revealing its golden-yellow, steaming interior, everyone gathered around.
Shi Tou was the first to get a piece. He imitated Zhou Jue, blew on it, and carefully took a bite.
"Hmm!" Stone's eyes lit up. "It's soft and fluffy, much tastier than the fruit we usually eat!"
"I want one too!"
"Let me have a taste!"
The roasted sweet potatoes were quickly devoured, and all the orcs who ate them praised them highly.
Next, the skewers were distributed. The sweet potato chunks, having absorbed the meat juices, were even more delicious and melted in the mouth.
"It's so delicious!" Benyue exclaimed, his words muffled as he ate heartily. "It's even better than eating pure meat!"
Seeing the satisfied looks on the faces of his people, Zhou Jue smiled and announced an even more important piece of news.
"This kind of sweet potato is not only delicious and filling, but also easy to store. Most importantly, we can grow it ourselves!"
"Grow it ourselves?" The old clan chief was stunned.
"Is it something we grow ourselves, so it can grow in the tribe?" Gray Ear asked tentatively.
“That’s right!” Zhou Jue picked up a sweet potato and said loudly, “If we clear a piece of land, plant them, and by harvest season, one sweet potato can become a whole clump! We’ll never have to worry about not having food during the cold season again!”
The entire tribe fell silent instantly, all the orcs were stunned by the blueprint Zhou Jue had drawn up.
Growing your own food?
Never have to go hungry again?
This is something they wouldn't even dare to dream of.
"Lord Wu... are you telling the truth?" The old clan chief's voice trembled.
“I guarantee it in the name of the Beast God’s messenger, it’s true,” Zhou Jue said, looking at him and enunciating each word clearly.
The next second, deafening cheers echoed throughout the entire valley.
Zhou Jue immediately took action. She led her people to choose a sunny and flat piece of land near the cave as the tribe's first experimental field.
She taught them how to till the soil, how to dig ditches, and how to cut sweet potatoes into pieces, ensuring that each piece had an eye.
"Master Wu, is this the right way to plant it?" Luo Ying asked earnestly, holding up a slice of sweet potato.
