In November, Nanyang had already begun to enter winter.
The distant mountains were shrouded in mist, dusk was falling, and scattered fallen leaves covered the road home. Luo Sheng looked up at the gray sky, and a cold wind swept by, ruffling the stray hairs at his temples.
The door was flung open with a bang, and Luo's mother, who was watching TV, saw her son return. She quickly stood up and walked briskly to him.
"Oh my goodness, you finally came back! If you hadn't come back, your father and I would have gone looking for you. The temperature has dropped drastically lately, and I was thinking of bringing you some warm clothes myself, but I didn't expect you to come back first." A mother can't stay idle when her son only comes home once in a long while.
"I'm not a child anymore, Mom." Luo Sheng's gaze darkened as he looked at his mother, a bitter smile failing to reach his eyes.
Ironically, I was fuming just moments before, but the moment I stepped into my house, my frustration dissipated considerably.
He didn't know how to start a conversation, and could only watch his mother busy herself for him.
"Son, what do you want to eat tonight? How about I cook you coconut chicken? Look how thin you've gotten lately, you must have been staying up late a lot."
"Um."
"Mom, Baijiu is back." Luo Sheng's Adam's apple bobbed slightly, and it took him a long time to finally speak.
As soon as she finished speaking, the once lively hall fell silent. Mother Luo also stopped pouring coconut juice and replied in a somewhat indifferent and ordinary tone, "Oh, the child is back. Time flies. Two years have passed in the blink of an eye."
Perhaps the topic was too sensitive, the two remained silent for a long time before Luo's mother spoke again.
"Luo Sheng, tidy up the table. Your father should be back soon. This coconut chicken was cooked a little late, but it's okay, you can have it as a midnight snack later."
Luo's mother glossed over the topic, deliberately changing the subject, seemingly unwilling to discuss anything related to baijiu (Chinese liquor) anymore.
Hearing the sound, Luo Sheng remained motionless. Instead, he took a step forward, suppressing the dull pain that swept through his heart, and walked towards the kitchen, standing steadily in front of his mother.
His voice held a hint of suppressed emotion: "Why did you do that?"
Luo's mother suddenly felt a sense of panic, and Luo Sheng clearly saw the evasive look in her eyes.
Her answer was vague, but it was also a warning.
"I don't understand what you're talking about, but Luo Sheng, let me remind you again, I don't want to repeat myself. We don't need to cause unpleasantness in the family over an outsider."
Luo Sheng took in his mother's expression, his eyes dimmed, and a hint of self-mockery crept into his heart.
"Mom, you know perfectly well what I'm saying. Didn't you go to Baijiu back then and force her to break up with me? Mom, why did you do that? You clearly stopped interfering in my relationship with her, yet you still did that? And you kept it from me for so long." The helplessness in his heart reached its peak, and he closed his eyes, trying to hide the bitterness in them.
"If it weren't for what you did back then, she and I might not have broken up."
Knowing that her son already knew everything, Luo's mother sighed before saying:
"You ask why? It's simple. Your father and I don't like that girl, and we don't approve of you two being together. The way you were about to break ties with the family did make us want that girl to leave you, so I thought I'd test her. But there's something you need to know: that girl did accept five million from your father and me before she agreed to break up with you."
At this point, Luo's mother chuckled, glanced at Luo Sheng whose expression wasn't quite good, and continued speaking.
"After you two broke up, seeing your listless and depressed state, your father and I regretted it. But when we think about that girl, who so readily accepted five million and agreed to break up, and how she might have approached you just for your money, child, please forgive your parents. We, as your parents, simply cannot allow someone like that."
"Five million is no small sum, but she didn't pass our test. Humph, otherwise she would have gotten even more."
After hearing his mother's explanation, Luo Sheng stood frozen in place, his eyes reddening. His mother's words were etched into his mind again and again, like sharp blades, cutting deeply into his already healed wounds.
"She did indeed receive five million before leaving you..."
"She's only after your money..."
The hurtful words lingered in his ears. Luo Sheng didn't know how he got out of his house. At this moment, his heart felt like it had been twisted tightly, pulled into knots, and shattered.
His phone kept vibrating in his pocket. He glanced at it blankly, then pressed the power button.
On the other side...
Yu Nian is discussing the concert in a few days with Lu Ge, the new representative of her studio.
Today is the day of the weekly meeting, and in principle, all employees of the studio should attend the weekly meeting.
Especially in these tense times, with the Inspiration Music Festival just around the corner.
However, today's meeting was postponed from 3 pm to 4 pm, and Yu Nian and the others still did not see Luo Sheng.
Lu Xi was getting impatient after making dozens of calls. He turned to Yu Nian and asked, "Did you get through to Luo Sheng? Or do you know where he is?"
After making more than a dozen phone calls without receiving any response, Yu Nian shook her head: "No, I don't know. He didn't tell me, but he came by this morning and disappeared this afternoon. I just called Aunt Luo, and she said she couldn't get through to him either."
Either something happened, or he was lured away by the liquor, Yu Nian guessed.
