Chapter 40 Heartbeat

Luo Sheng had just finished revising the manuscript when he picked up his phone and saw a WeChat message from his father.

He looked at the photo—a couple? Zooming in, he realized it wasn't; it was Song Ci and Yu Nian, both dressed in racing suits. But Yu Nian seemed to have eaten too much; her stomach looked rather large.

Luo Sheng stared at the photo for a very long time. Although they were wearing racing suits, to Luo Sheng it looked like couple outfits, and the smiles on their faces were particularly irritating.

Luo Sheng knew the meaning behind his father sending him this photo; it was a way of putting him in a difficult position. His father and mother still wanted Yu Nian to become a member of the Luo family. Luo Sheng chuckled to himself, thinking that if Bai Jiu were here, he wouldn't be in this state of confusion.

After Song Ci left, Yu Nian ran back to her room, avoiding her parents' gossipy little eyes.

She hopped onto the bed, lay down, and stared at the painting Song Ci had given her. She took out her phone, snapped a picture of the painting, opened her WeChat Moments, edited the caption, then thought for a moment, picked out a photo of herself and Song Ci at the racetrack from her phone's album, and clicked post.

Yu Nian's WeChat Moments today:

"Racing with Brother Song today~"

In just five minutes, it received over 50 likes.

Of the dozen or so comments, Yu Nian picked a few to reply to.

Song Song Song Ci: Great shot!

Yu Yu Yu Nian: It's not that the photos are good! It's that I'm naturally beautiful!

Chen Ruan: Yu Tou Nian! You still say you didn't steal my man?!

Yu Yu Yu Nian: You have so many men! How many of them should I snatch?

Jin Yan: What the hell! How dare you race against my idol?!

Yu Yu Yu Nian: By strength.

Father Yu: My daughter is the most beautiful! But who is that homeless man next to her?!

Yu's mother replied to Yu's father: Where are the homeless people? Aren't we just my daughter and my future son-in-law here?

Yu Nian scrolled through her WeChat Moments for a while, and only at the bottom did she see that Baijiu, who hadn't been heard from for almost two or three years, had posted a message. Only Luo Sheng and a few classmates liked it.

Baijiu: The weather is great today. (Photo: Baijiu taking a selfie on a street corner in the US)

Yu Nian also gave it a thumbs up. It had been a long time since she last saw Baijiu, and she seemed to have changed a bit. However, Yu Nian couldn't quite put her finger on what was different, but she felt that Baijiu looked a little more haggard than before.

After exiting her WeChat Moments, Yu Nian opened her photo album. Today at the racetrack, Song Ci had taken many photos of her, along with photos taken by many staff members. She hadn't noticed while the photos were being taken, but now, looking at them, Yu Nian realized that her poses with Song Ci were somewhat ambiguous.

Rather than saying their postures were ambiguous, it would be more accurate to say that Song Ci's gaze towards Yu Nian was ambiguous. In these photos, Song Ci is either pulling Yu Nian along or looking at Yu Nian with extreme affection, staring intently at her with undisguised deep emotion in his eyes.

Scrolling to the last picture, Yu Nian couldn't remember when it was taken. In the photo, Song Ci was holding Yu Nian, his eyes closed with his head buried in her neck, his hands on her waist, and his slightly upturned lips showing contentment.

Yu Nian recalled how tightly Song Ci hugged her today, and how his warm breath captivated her at that moment.

Her heart pounded as she looked at the photo. Yu Nian touched her face and found it burning hot again, even though she had just rinsed it with cold water for so long.

She placed her phone face down under the covers, rolled around in bed, and then saw the painting of her and Song Ci standing under the Eiffel Tower again. Suddenly, Yu Nian calmed down. She carefully recalled the days she spent with Song Ci and realized that he was indeed a very reassuring person. Even someone as slow to warm up as Yu Nian could tell from their interactions that Song Ci was expressing his feelings for her.

Gradually, an idea began to form in her mind: Could she have fallen for Song Ci?

Once this strange thought surfaced in Yu Nian's mind, it was difficult for it to disappear.

Just then, Song Ci sent a WeChat message. The man's simple sentence instantly stirred up Yu Nian's heart, which had finally calmed down.

The man sent a voice message, and Yu Nian didn't even dare to turn the volume up too high; she held the phone's earpiece to her ear.

"Niannian, when are you going to be my girlfriend?" Song Ci on the phone must have just taken a shower, her voice was still damp, and her lazy tone carried a hint of coaxing.

Yu Nian admitted that she had feelings for Song Ci, but her focus was entirely on her work. She could find another man, but where would she find a job if she lost hers?

So she went downstairs and poured herself a glass of ice water to sober up.

"I'll wait until I'm eighty." By the time she's eighty, she'll probably have won a grand slam of music awards.

"good."

Undeterred by the second rejection, Song Ci thought, "Well, when we're both eighty, he'll be her boyfriend."

Yu Nian's Diary 19

How would you describe that moment of heart-fluttering excitement?

"It was destined."
