Chapter 16 Misunderstanding
Ji Zhisui didn't notice Pei Yian's change, and exclaimed in amazement: "You're quite impressive! I thought you were the kind of young master who never touched women!"
This voice also pulled Pei Yian back from his thoughts. He said jokingly, "It seems that my wife has a deep misunderstanding of me. You must get to know me better in the future."
Ji Zhisui smiled awkwardly, thinking that there was no need to understand so well. She lowered her head and began to fiddle with the herbs, preparing to boil the medicine. She dripped some spiritual spring water from the space into it, hoping that Pei would get better soon.
But she felt a little strange. Why did she feel that there seemed to be a little more spiritual spring water in the space?
She quickly dismissed the thought, thinking she must have remembered it wrongly. Looking carefully, she found that the amount of the spiritual spring was no different from before.
There was no one else near the medicine stove at this time, and the two of them returned to silence, with only the crackling sound of the firewood burning in the stove.
Looking at the idle stove on the other side and thinking of Pei lying on the hospital bed, Ji Zhisui had other ideas.
She went to the shop assistant to explain the reason, and the assistant looked a little embarrassed. Their shop did not provide this service and could only boil the medicine.
Ji Zhisui understood immediately and handed the five coins in his hand to the waiter, "I know the rules."
The waiter looked at the copper coins in his hand, smiled happily, and agreed to let Ji Zhisui requisition the kitchen. Anyway, there was no one in the kitchen at this time, and it was not the time for guests to eat.
Ji Zhisui took out some rice, mixed it with brown rice, and some dried red mushrooms, intending to make brown rice and red mushroom porridge.
Along the way, they picked a lot of red mushrooms and dried them. As for the rice, it was given to them by the yamen runners before. The quantity was not much, but it was more than enough to make porridge.
While Ji Zhisui was cooking porridge, Pei Yian took the initiative to light the fire. Ji Zhisui was very satisfied with this tool who was trouble-free and understood his instructions.
Pei Yian, who was burning a fire, felt the change in Ji Zhisui's eyes. He always felt that the look was like an object of satisfaction.
Ji Zhisui cooked a lot of red mushroom porridge. She had already planned to eat half of it at noon and the remaining half at night. She also had a few steamed buns, which were perfect with it.
Pei Yian fed the prepared medicine soup to Pei. After drinking a bowl of warm medicine, Pei felt her stomach softened and comfortable. Her originally listless spirit became much more energetic after swallowing the bowl of porridge.
The old lady and the second sister-in-law had already washed the two children clean, and everyone gathered around the table, drinking the red mushroom porridge contentedly.
After dinner, Mrs. Pei asked everyone to sit around the table and began to count the recent expenses in detail. Even the two children were listening.
Ji Zhisui looked at this scene and a smile appeared on her lips unconsciously. She really liked the feeling of the whole family sitting together and planning for the future.
She is an orphan and has never enjoyed the warmth of a home since she was a child. Although the director's mother and other children are good, they are different in the final analysis.
After growing up, I also ventured alone. I didn’t expect to come to this strange world and experience this.
The old lady explained the recent expenses and also deliberately emphasized that Ji Zhisui earned one tael of silver today and handed it over. After deducting the expenses, the Pei family now has less than six taels of property.
Pei Tiantian and the second sister-in-law, who were holding Bai Xue, were the most supportive and praised Ji Zhisui without hesitation. Even Pei Xinghai's eyes were shining, as if she was the backbone of the family.
Only Pei, who was sitting aside, had a look of loss and guilt on her face. Her useless body required her to take medicine frequently, and buying medicine cost a lot of money.
Along the way, she has lost count of how much of a burden she has brought to her family. She has been spoiled since she was a child and was still pampered after she got married. She can't do any work or earn money, and can only spend money.
Sensitive and self-blaming emotions surged up in her, and she suddenly felt a little regretful. She wondered why she had not tried to commit suicide like her eldest daughter-in-law. That way, she would not have become a burden to everyone, and maybe they would be better off now.
Pei was sitting opposite Ji Zhisui. When she looked up, she saw Pei's somewhat sad and guilty expression, and she could probably guess what he was thinking.
"Grandma, I plan to set up a food stall when we get to Qizhou County, and I may need help from my family then. Although Qizhou is not as prosperous as Huizhou City, it is a county town after all, and it is also by the sea. There are many merchant ships coming and going. I think a food stall should be quite popular." Ji Zhisui began to talk about his plan.
Her words attracted everyone's attention. Everyone followed her words unconsciously and their thoughts turned, including Pei who was feeling sorry for herself.
"Sui Niang, you have such good cooking skills, this food stall will definitely be successful." Pei Ersao responded. She was very confident in Sui Niang's cooking skills. The food she made tasted as good as those in big restaurants. Maybe she could open a big restaurant in the future!
"But making these things must cost a lot of money! What if..." Pei said with some worry. After all, making something requires investment. What if it fails? They didn't have much money to begin with.
"I believe in my wife's craftsmanship." Pei Yian expressed his opinion.
Madam Pei finally made the decision and said, "We can give Sui Niang a try. It's just some food, how much can we invest? Besides, she earned a tael of silver by cooking for the yamen runners. I have confidence in Sui Niang."
"You! Don't worry too much. Take good care of yourself and keep your body healthy so that you can be of help." Old Madam Pei said to Pei.
The old lady had made the decision, so Pei Shi couldn't continue to refute it and restrained her hesitant nature.
She is no longer the general's wife who had everything handed to her. She needs to be self-reliant. If she takes better care of her health, maybe she can be of help.
Now that the way forward was clear, everyone's faces rarely showed smiles, and their eyes became more lively.
Of course, Pei Yian was not among them. His eyes were always indifferent and distant, as if there was some barrier between them, excluding him alone.
But the expression on his face was the same as everyone else's, and no one noticed anything unusual about him.
Ji Zhisui happily ran to another room and started washing up. The journey was really inconvenient, but fortunately it was spring and the weather was relatively mild.
She happily took a bath in the tub, and only stood up reluctantly and changed her clothes when the water turned cold.
After washing up, she ran to call Pei Yian. Now he was the only one who hadn't showered yet.
Pei Yian sat on a stool by the window, looking out, alone, not knowing what he was thinking.
Ji Zhisui leaned forward and patted his shoulder, "You can go wash up now."
Her hair was now loose and still wet. It swayed with her movements, and some of it fell on Pei Yian's back and shoulders.
The two people's hair was entangled, and Ji Zhisui also realized that the distance between them was too close, even their hair was entangled.
