Chapter 7: Getting Eggs
However, Ji Zhisui flipped the lid of the pot to prevent the mouth-watering aroma from spreading. She then cut the cabbage on the stove into pieces and planned to make stir-fried cabbage and cabbage and egg soup.
The cabbage was cut and the bacon and bracken in the pot were ready. She lifted the lid of the pot and sprinkled wild onions in to enhance the flavor.
The aroma of meat wafted in the air along with the scent of wild onions, making the taste even more tempting. Many yamen runners did not even bother to rest, but came to the stove and stretched their necks to look into the pot.
Not only the yamen runners, but even the other people in the cave were attracted by the overbearing smell of meat, and their eyes could not help but look in the direction where the fragrance was spreading.
“It smells so good!”
“It’s the smell of meat!”
"It smells so good, grandma! I want to eat! I want to eat meat." Pei Yuxuan smelled the aroma of meat, and started crying while pulling his grandmother's clothes, as if he would not give up until he was satisfied.
Mrs. Pei Er looked at her crying grandson and immediately felt distressed. She comforted him in a gentle voice, "Okay, okay, Xuanxuan, don't cry. Grandma will send someone to check on him."
Pei Yuanyuan looked in disbelief at the direction of Ji Zhisui. Although she couldn't see the person because of the yamen runners, she knew that this was the work of her third cousin's wife.
Does she actually have some skills?
But she was not jealous. Cooking was a job for the lower class. She was so precious that she would not do such a thing that would lower her status.
In his heart, he felt even more contempt for Ji Zhisui.
"Yuanyuan, go over there and see if you can ask those yamen runners for some food." Old Madam Pei Er instructed her granddaughter when she saw her stupidly standing there.
After hearing this, Pei Yuanyuan's face turned ugly and she ran away without caring about what Mrs. Pei Er was calling out to her. She didn't want to ask those inferior people for food, especially in front of her third cousin whom she looked down upon.
Ji Zhisui took out the bacon and bracken fried in the pot, left some meat oil in the pot, added the chopped cabbage and started stir-frying, and the stir-fried cabbage was also completed successfully.
Next is the cabbage and egg soup. The soul of this dish is to pour boiling hot water into the eggs when frying them. This way the soup will turn milky white and taste fresher and better.
When the pot is boiling, add cabbage leaves, simmer for a while, sprinkle with wild onions and salt, and a cabbage and egg soup is ready.
Ji Zhisui's operation was smooth and pleasing to the eyes, making everyone's eyes nod along with the movements of her hands, their eyes shining and their stomachs rumbling with hunger.
Lao Wutou couldn't help but think in his heart that this young lady didn't know any cooking skills at all. He dared to guarantee that it would take several years of practice for her to master such skillful and effortless movements.
The yamen runners who had been waiting for a long time could no longer wait any longer. They lined up in a hurry and began to enjoy the delicious food in the evening.
Ji Zhisui was also very tactful and did not stay any longer, but returned to where the Pei family was. She was also a little hungry.
The Pei family did not eat first, but waited for Ji Zhisui to come back.
"Sui Niang, you're back. Come sit down and have your meal." Old Madam Pei came forward and pulled Ji Zhisui to sit next to her.
The Pei family's dinner was simple, consisting of a can of red mushroom soup, half a white flour bun, and corn dumplings.
But this is already a hearty meal for the family, with white flour buns and hot and delicious red mushroom soup.
Ji Zhisui received a whole white flour bun. She knew that the Pei family was taking special care of her, but she couldn't eat so much by herself. She divided the bun into three parts and gave them to the Pei family's children, Pei Tiantian and Pei Xinghai.
These two children used to be so cute, but now they have little flesh on their faces and look a little malnourished.
Pei Tiantian looked at the extra half of the steamed bun, her almond-shaped eyes sparkling as she looked at Ji Zhisui, "Thank you, Third Sister-in-law."
Although her third cousin's wife didn't speak or pay attention to anyone along the way, Pei Tiantian even suspected that she couldn't speak. But today she heard her third cousin's wife talking, saw her making delicious food, and even shared some steamed buns with her.
Pei Xinghai looked at Ji Zhisui timidly, then quickly lowered his head, his eyes fixed on the white steamed bun, and he had no other reaction.
Fearing that people would think too much, Madam Pei explained, "Sui Niang, Xingxing has always been like this. Don't take it to heart. He likes you."
Ji Zhisui looked at Pei Xinghai's reaction and knew that he could not speak since birth, but he looked like he had some autism.
However, nothing else could be seen from this contact, and further observation was needed. Suppressing this thought, Ji Zhisui began to prepare dinner.
The corn balls are a bit rough, but when paired with red mushroom soup, they have a unique flavor.
This meal, which consisted of white flour buns and a bowl of red mushroom soup, was enough to satisfy everyone in the Pei family.
After the meal, the Pei family cleaned up the dishes consciously without letting Ji Zhisui interfere.
The yamen runners had a delicious meal in this wilderness. The bacon was sliced into thin slices and fried to perfection, making it shiny and oily. The fat burst out when you took a bite. The refreshing bracken was paired with the salty and fragrant bacon, and paired with a bite of solid steamed buns. It was so delicious.
After eating, have a bowl of cabbage and egg soup. The sweetness of the cabbage is stimulated, and when it enters the stomach, it warms and satisfies you very much!
The yamen runners devoured this meal so voraciously that they wanted to clean their plates. There was meat, vegetables and soup. Even those restaurants probably didn't have such good food. If they could have a meal like this every day during their exile, it would be so comfortable!
They also didn't expect that the young lady, who looked so young, had such cooking skills.
The appetite was greatly satisfied, and people's mood would involuntarily improve. Everyone made a unanimous decision.
When Lao Wutou came to find Ji Zhisui, she was sorting the ingredients in the basket. These could last for a few meals. If she could cook for those yamen runners, even if she didn't get any reward, she would at least get food.
Apart from anything else, she was also craving for bacon.
But the Pei family was extremely poor. After arriving in Lingnan, they probably didn't even have enough money to settle down. It was a problem for them to have enough food to eat, let alone meat.
"Miss Ji, please keep these eggs as a reward for cooking for us tonight." Lao Wutou handed the five eggs in his hand to Ji Zhisui. She had been a great help tonight. If he had come on stage, those ingredients would have been wasted.
"That's too polite." Ji Zhisui declined politely, but he had already started thinking about what to do with the eggs.
Eggs are also good things, they are full of treasures.
"Take it, this is what you deserve. That... Miss Ji, I need your help with something else. Can you please cook for us? Of course, we will pay you." Lao Wutou explained his purpose.
Miss Ji's cooking skills are even better than those in restaurants. Even though he is full now, he is still a little greedy.
Ji Zhisui agreed to this matter without any hesitation. He could get paid and establish good relationships with these yamen runners. Why not do it?
