Chapter 220 The guilt is real, but the goodness isn't necessarily real.

“This is the second letter. It was written to us by Jiang Zuoque after your family was gone.”

Guilt overwhelmed Aunt Jiang and Uncle Jiang. Jiang Zuoming and Jiang Xiaomei, standing nearby, also fell silent, heads bowed.

The Jiang family's downfall was caused by Jiang Zuoque, not by them. However, both by blood and in name, Jiang Zuoque was their elder brother.

Because of this relationship, they couldn't hold their heads up in front of Jiang Yuting at all.

They considered writing a letter to remind her, but it was to no avail. First, they didn't know Jiang Yuting's address, and second, given Jiang Zuoque's character, he wouldn't let anyone see the letter.

By the time they learned of the situation, it was already a done deal. Ironically, they only found out by writing a letter to Jiang Zuoqu.

"The higher-ups...the higher-ups said that your family was defeated because of his report, and you can no longer look down on him. Secondly, he wants us to keep an eye on you and wait until he stabilizes his situation before marrying you."

Speak slowly and deliberately, the letter was even more humiliating than what she had said. Aunt Jiang had already chosen the simpler points to address.

Upon opening the letter and reading the first sentence, Jiang Yuting's face turned cold, as icy and biting as snow in the dead of winter.

Aunt Jiang was indeed being too lenient; Jiang Zuoque's intention was to have her become his concubine.

They said the Jiang family was gone, and Jiang Yuting was no longer the high and mighty young lady she could offer him no help. They said it would only happen after he and Xu Ya's affair was settled.

He returned and married her, giving her a place to stay.

Through the letter, Jiang Yuting seemed to see Jiang Zuoque's ugly face. Was giving her a place to stay meant for her to become a mistress and be grateful?

[That bastard, Jiang Zuoque, that piece of trash.]

[Too lenient. If I had known he was planning this, I would have cut off his third leg.]

[They want to enjoy the beauty of others, without even caring if their own face gets stretched out.]

[Dad, from now on, don't be polite when you see Jiang Zuoque.]

The letter passed from Jiang Yuting's hands to Boss Li's. After reading it, Boss Li looked at Jiang Yuting with heartache.

What did his wife go through before she met him?

It's unbelievable that he'd be targeted by such an ungrateful scumbag as Jiang Zuoqiu. The Jiang family helped him, and not only did he not show gratitude, he even repaid kindness with enmity behind his back.

Afterwards, he even tried to take advantage of people. To describe Jiang Zuoque as a scumbag is an understatement.

"Auntie, what happened next?"

Tears welled up inside Jiang Yuting, preventing them from falling. She reached out her hand, unsure of what to say.

"Later, I came up with an idea. I said I would marry you off to Zuo Ming in exchange for a dowry. Knowing your personality, your aunt knows you will definitely run away. The butcher is the one I found for my little sister. The day you left, my little sister will marry him."

"Yuting, your aunt didn't mean it, but there's nothing I can do. You'll only be safe if you leave here."

After finishing her dry, monotonous speech, Aunt Jiang looked at Jiang Yuting's face as if she were observing her closely.

The truth has come out: the marriage arrangement was exactly as Jiang Yuting had suspected.

Actually, there are clues to follow. If it were true, how could she have escaped so easily and successfully obtained identification with Jiang Xiaomei's help?

But I wasn't happy; another heavy stone had fallen on my shoulders.

"Auntie, I have a question for you."

Staring at Aunt Jiang's face, Jiang Yuting didn't know what to do.

The claim that Aunt Jiang treated her badly is unfounded, as is the claim that Aunt Jiang treated her well.

"Yuting, you can ask."

Clutching her clothes tightly, Aunt Jiang lowered her head.

"Auntie, why didn't you tell me about Jiang Zuoqiu when I first came to your house? You know, Jiang Zuoqiu is your son, you raised him, you know his personality very well."

"Is it really as the letter says, that Jiang Zuoque told you not to talk, and you didn't? Actually, you already sensed something was wrong back then!"

"If we knew Jiang Zuoque's true personality, Auntie, do you think there would be anything more to it?"

Aunt Jiang closed her eyes, unable to speak for a long time.

What are you talking about? Jiang Yuting already asked all that, didn't she? Yes, they all know Jiang Zuoqiu's personality; how could they not guess what he's going to do next?

If they had told Jiang Yuting to write a letter back, the Jiang family would have been on guard and wouldn't have fallen so quickly.

So, what made them obediently listen to Jiang Zuoque and keep quiet?

Aunt Jiang had a vague answer in her heart when she asked herself the question.

Perhaps, perhaps after Jiang Zuoque achieves what he desires and becomes a superior person, he will be satisfied and can then return to be their good son, their proud son.

They are selfish, so when facing Jiang Yuting, they subconsciously treat her well and want to make up for it.

“Aunt Jiang, you are actually the same as Jiang Zuoque.”

A single, casual remark revealed the truth that Aunt Jiang and the others hadn't said.

Jiang's father valued and cherished talent, and Jiang Zuoque had received help from their family. Jiang Yuting didn't believe that her aunt and uncle were unaware of this.

At the same time, it became even clearer what Jiang Zuoque's true nature was, because Aunt Jiang and Uncle Jiang were two people whom Jiang Zuoque had failed to repay.

He knew, yet chose to let Jiang Zuoque do as she pleased, watching her worry and sigh every day about family matters.

When it actually happens, they start making excuses for themselves again. The rest is obvious; it's very simple.

Perhaps he felt too guilty, which is why he let her leave, or perhaps her presence affected Jiang Zuoque, which is why he let her go.

"Yuting, no, it's..."
