With a hint of coaxing, Li Erya went from hesitant to certain.
"Big sister, I'll go right away."
Putting down the clothes she was holding, Li Erya dried herself off and walked slowly towards the door of the main room.
Li Daya vented her frustration by rubbing the clothes in the basin, scoffing at Li Erya's petty schemes.
She was older than Li Erya and was the first child of the second wife. She was doted on by Li Lao Er and Zhao Dahua for a time, until Li Jiafu was born, after which she became virtually unknown.
But regardless, compared to Li Erya, the youngest, her situation in the second wife's household was much better. Zhao Dahua would occasionally show her some concern and tell her things, unlike Li Erya.
Because she was the youngest and a girl, Li Lao Er and Zhao Da Hua both believed that Li Er Ya had prevented them from having any more sons, otherwise why couldn't they get pregnant after giving birth to Li Er Ya?
Li Daya knew more than Li Erya, and naturally she knew that Li Laoda was not like before. He was just trying to make a fool of Li Erya. At the same time, she held a sliver of hope that Li Laoda would really give Li Erya the meat!
"Uncle."
A mosquito-like sound came from the doorway. Jiang Yuting looked into the yard and saw that only Li Daya was there.
"It's Li Erya."
He muttered something under his breath, clearly puzzled by Li Erya's knocking.
The other kids in the family weren't close to them; they only found out about Li Lao Er and Li Lao San's instigation by chance.
What's Li Erya doing here?
[Father, I've packed up the things. Please open the door and see.]
The half-eaten pheasant on the table was put away. Jiang Yuting placed her sewing basket on the table and gestured for Boss Li to open the door.
"Er Ya, is there something you need?"
Li Erya, standing at the door, was barely taller than his knees. Her head was large, her body small, and she swayed precariously, making one wonder if a gust of wind could blow her over.
"Uncle, I want some meat. I haven't eaten meat in a long time."
The smell of meat inside grew stronger. She recalled what Li Daya had told her, and how Li Erya had expressed her wish.
"Uncle, I really want to eat meat."
Li Erya spoke again, looking at Li Laoda expectantly.
"No, no, why are you asking my dad for meat? Don't you have a dad yourself?"
"If you want meat, come ask us. Do we owe you something or what? Do you think my dad is honest?"
[Look at that self-righteous tone! He said it once and then repeated it twice. No wonder he later twisted the truth and smeared my father.]
"Dad, don't give it to us. We'd rather feed it to the dogs than give it to those heartless people."
Li Laoda wholeheartedly agreed with what Li Yiyi said.
After having a daughter, he realized that everyone in the Li family was talented. From the two old folks, Mr. and Mrs. Li, to the youngest, Li Erya, they all liked to seek validation from him.
"Er Ya, if you want meat, you can ask your father," Li Laoda tried to explain.
“My dad doesn’t have it.”
"Fine," Li gritted his teeth and gave up the idea.
"Your father doesn't have any, and neither do I. If you want meat, figure it out yourself. Don't bother me."
Since Li Lao Er didn't have any, he came to find Li Lao Da. He was afraid that he had been taken for a fool too many times, which had made these people complacent.
"Uncle, I can smell it, there's meat in your room."
Li Erya stepped into the room with one foot, glaring fiercely at Li Yiyi with her small eyes. She disliked Li Fuyi and Li Yiyi.
Why is it that all the girls in the family don't have to do any work?
Li Yiyi: She can't even walk yet, how can she do any work? But I can understand, after all, she has good parents, Li Erya doesn't.
"Dad, she's glaring at me."
“Li Erya, if you want to cause trouble, go back to your second wife’s house. This is not a place for you to make a scene.”
Old Li's patience, which was already running out, was finally worn off, especially since Li Erya was glaring at his daughter.
Li Laoda, carrying Li Erya, put her back in the yard.
"Li Erya, I'm not your father. If you want to eat something, go ask your father. Don't bother me."
Without a second thought, Li Erya walked away, still confused as to why Li Laoda wouldn't give her any meat, even though she hadn't asked for much.
"Dad, don't be angry. Not everyone is as concerned about saving face as you are."
We won't bother with shameless people.
"Dad, do you want more food?"
"Honey, get ready and go to sleep! I can't eat anymore."
Li Laoda indirectly responded to Li Yiyi's words. Jiang Yuting glanced at Li Yiyi and, seeing her happy expression, understood Li Laoda's plan.
Go to bed early and give their daughter time to cultivate herself.
"Um."
The kerosene lamp quickly went out, plunging the room into darkness. In the courtyard, Li Erya's tears streamed down her face; she was utterly aggrieved.
"Alright, alright, Uncle has his own child now, he won't give us any more food."
Li Daya added insult to injury from the sidelines, and seeing Li Erya being bullied made her feel much better.
"Big sister." Li Erya didn't quite understand what Li Daya was saying.
"Er Ya, Uncle has a child now, and all his things will go to Li Yiyi, not us."
My uncle has a child. My uncle has a child.
Li Daya's words echoed in Li Erya's mind. She didn't quite understand, but when she thought of Li Yiyi's little face, so fair and tender, unlike her own, she couldn't help but think of her.
Looking down at her cracked hands, covered in wounds and not white at all, Li Erya gradually felt a stark contrast in her mind.
She stopped talking and obediently washed her clothes, while Li Daya looked away disdainfully.
Inside the large house,
Li Yiyi opened her eyes, and heard regular breathing beside her; it was Jiang Yuting and Boss Li.
