Chapter 214 Send Umbrella
Gu Zhao didn't feel uncomfortable for too long.
Because the old doctor urged him to get to work, he arranged his work in the shortest time possible. He copied books in the morning, identified medicinal materials in the afternoon, and spent the rest of the time tending to insects.
After such a careful calculation, Gu Zhao did not even have a moment of free time.
Gu Zhao, with his little face slumped, was stared at by the old doctor as he copied books in front of his family.
The others stayed for a while, then got up and left when they thought the time was about right.
Before leaving, Shen Changfeng took a look at the herbs drying in the yard and said, "Old Yan, it's going to rain soon, do you still want the herbs?"
The old doctor also knew that Shen Changfeng was good at observing the weather. Just as he was about to get up and run out, he suddenly turned back, picked up Gu Zhao, and said, "Come and give me a hand."
The Gu family wanted to come over to help, but the old doctor stopped them and said, "Let the child do it. He needs to get familiar with all kinds of medicinal herbs as soon as possible."
The Gu family listened to the advice.
The old man lives alone in Baiyun Town. On weekdays, only an elderly woman comes to help with cooking and cleaning, so Gu Zhao doesn't have much work to do.
The group returned to the outside of Baiyun Academy and continued waiting.
"Without Gu Zhao, my ears are suddenly quiet. I feel a little uncomfortable." Zhang Yuniang whispered to her husband.
Every time I take my youngest son out, he seems to have a stomach like a bottomless pit. Basically, everything he sees on the street is what he likes to eat, and he won't make a fuss but just keeps pestering for it.
Gu Mingda comforted him, "Look at the bright side. The children will have to separate sooner or later. Let's just consider it as an early start."
Zhang Yunniang looked down at Niuniu. It was okay that her sons left home, as she didn't have to worry about them suffering. But if her daughter got married and left home in the future, she would never feel at ease, always fearing that the child would be bullied by her in-laws.
When pedestrians were holding up their umbrellas, Gu Yan came out of Baiyun Academy.
Non-candidates are not allowed to enter, and many candidates did not bring umbrellas.
Gu Yan held an umbrella and walked a young man of similar age to his family. He then went back with the Gu family, got several umbrellas, and brought the other children out.
"Run slower and don't get wet in the rain," Zhang Yuniang reminded.
Gu Yan responded and rushed into the rain again. He didn't pick up all the children until the corners of his clothes were soaked.
Zhang Yunniang looked at him distressedly and said, "Why do we need you to run around? The academy can't watch so many people get wet in the rain. We have to arrange for someone to pick them up later."
Gu Yan chuckled and said, "I saw that they were anxiously waiting, so I didn't think much about it."
The Gu family didn't ask Gu Yan how he did in the exam, but he took the initiative to say: "I tried my best to answer the questions. If I didn't pass, it's just that I'm not as good as others. I don't have any regrets."
Gu Yan is now in a relatively relaxed state of mind, and his family members are also relieved to see him like this.
"Don't think about these things. Drink a bowl of hot soup to drive away the cold." Zhang Yuniang handed a bowl of hot soup to her son.
They were currently staying at a restaurant outside Baiyun Academy. Since they had reserved a seat early, most of the dishes they had ordered had already been served, so Gu Yan could enjoy a ready-made meal.
After Gu Yan took the bowl of soup, he did not drink it immediately. Instead, he looked around and asked, "Where's Ah Zhao?"
After learning that his younger brother had become his disciple, Gu Yan was very happy for him.
"If you pass the exam this time, you and your brother will have someone to take care of you in Baiyun Town. Doctor Yan's grandson is about the same age as you, and he is said to be studying in the academy." Zhang Yunniang said with a smile.
In fact, Gu Yan was almost certain that he would pass the exam, but he was always modest and did not exaggerate.
"The whole family will go to Zhuangyuanlou for dinner tonight. Changfeng should not be absent. This is to congratulate Ayan for his good performance in the exam." Gu Mingda said.
Zhuangyuanlou is a restaurant in Beijing that is as famous as Zuixianlou. Gu Mingda booked a private room in advance.
When Shen Changfeng heard Gu Mingda specifically mention his name, he felt happy as if he had become a member of the family, and said, "Okay, then I'll go home and rest after dinner."
He was really afraid of Gu Zhao's room, fearing that there might be some poisonous insects that had not been cleaned up.
Gu Yan frowned slightly and reminded: "Dad, the exam results will not be announced until three days later, and I may not be able to get into Baiyun Academy."
Gu Mingda said: "This is not to celebrate your admission, but to celebrate that you finally broke through the shackles and took your first exam."
Gu Yan was slightly stunned.
He saw his father failing the exams repeatedly and became afraid of exams, but he didn't expect that his father had always seen it but did not force him.
Gu Mingda patted his son on the shoulder and said, "It's amazing to have the courage to take that step. Success and failure are human nature."
Gu Yan nodded vigorously and said, "Don't worry, father. I'll remember this."
Niuniu waited patiently for them to finish speaking before asking with a troubled look on her face, "We're having dinner at Zhuangyuanlou tonight, isn't Third Brother going?"
The little girl still remembered Gu Zhao's instructions and was thinking about any delicious food.
Shen Changfeng heard this. Today, Doctor Yan forced Gu Zhao to stay. Gu Mingda would probably not bring him back to the capital. Unexpectedly, Gu Mingda said:
"We will wait until the evening in Baiyun Town and then return. We will take him back with us and send him back tomorrow morning. We can only make him suffer."
Gu Mingda downplayed the hardships he had inflicted on his own son.
Shen Changfeng did not realize the hardship that Gu Zhao had gone through in his journey, he just felt very moved. The Gu family really attached great importance to family reunion!
After lunch, the rain outside stopped.
"I've asked the restaurant owner, and there's a peach blossom forest to the south, and behind the forest is the Baiyun Temple. We could go there for a visit," Gu Mingda suggested.
Everyone left the restaurant without noticing that two old gentlemen in long gowns were sitting by the window on the second floor, staring at Gu Yan who was walking on the street holding his sister's hand.
"He has an umbrella, but he also remembers to take care of others. He is a child with a good heart." The long-faced old man praised.
The round-faced old gentleman heard this and said, "Do you like this child? This child is here to take the exam for our academy. If you agree to stay, I will make the decision about this disciple and give him to you."
The long-faced old man had not yet made up his mind whether to stay in the academy to teach or return to his hometown. Hearing this, he said, "Just because you have a good character doesn't necessarily mean you have good talent."
The round-faced old man said, "Then you wait. If he passes the exam, you can stay. How about that?"
The long-faced old man hesitated.
The round-faced old man rolled his eyes, held his hand tightly, and said, "Come on, don't keep hanging on to one tree. You have nothing to do these few days, why don't you read the papers together and see if there are any good candidates."
The long-faced old man really liked Gu Yan. When he heard this, he said, "Why should I interfere with your college exams?"
But his steps were light and he was pulled into the academy by his old friend.
