Chapter 30 Going to Pick Him Up
Liu Fen responded from the kitchen, "Okay."
Yang Dashu smiled and said to Wu Laicai, "No more, no more. I caught a fat worm today. Come to my house, let's have a drink."
They've been close since childhood. He's lucky today, having caught a big worm, so naturally he's coming to find Wu Laicai for a drink.
Wu Laicai was also tempted, and he immediately stood up: "Okay, then I won't stand on ceremony."
The two walked out together.
Wu Laicai called out to Liu Fen in the kitchen, "Wife, I'm going to Brother Dashu's house for a drink. You guys can eat by yourselves. I'll be back later, just leave the door open for me."
The two houses are not far apart, about a mile apart.
Liu Fen shook her head in the kitchen, but said nothing.
I can just feed the kids myself.
After dinner, we cleaned up and washed up, and the children all went back to their rooms to sleep.
When Liu Fen went to the back of the house, a large gray dog popped out and wagged its tail at her.
Liu Fen took a look and saw that there were four puppies in the litter, all of them chubby. With people living in peace and contentment, many families keep dogs.
Some are used to guard the house, while others are raised to adulthood and sold to dog meat restaurants.
Three of the kittens in her litter were already reserved, and she collected several tens of coins for each.
The remaining leg is lame; it's a congenital condition, and nobody wants it.
After watching Liu Fen for a while, she went back to her room.
She fell asleep quickly, but woke up suddenly in the middle of the night to find the bedside empty; her husband, Wu Laicai, had not yet returned.
Liu Fen recalled what Su Dai had said during the day.
If he hasn't returned by midnight, she should go and pick him up.
Is it midnight now? Maybe not yet, but it shouldn't be too long.
Liu Fen felt anxious and couldn't fall asleep even with her eyes closed, so she got up.
Thinking that the road wasn't too far, I felt at ease going to check it out.
He took the oil lamp, lit it, and went out.
She walked the road to the Yang family's house every day. Because the two families had a good relationship, Shi Chao would give each other gifts, and the children of the two families often played together.
I don't know when it rained, but the road was muddy and had a few puddles.
Seeing that she could already see the Yang family's house, Liu Fen felt a little angry. She shouldn't have come; Wu Laicai wouldn't have had a good time and would complain about her again.
After cursing Su Dai and her daughter several times in her mind, Liu Fen felt much better.
She saw a figure emerge from the Yang family's house, and she breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, the person had already finished eating.
Wu Laicai's face was flushed from drinking, and he swayed a little when Leng Feng blew on him, but he quickly regained his balance. When he saw Liu Fen, he frowned and asked, "Why are you here?"
"I saw you hadn't come back yet, so I came to pick you up because I was afraid you were drunk."
Liu Fen said irritably, "Wu Laicai is drunk right now. She's not that stupid. She came to pick him up because of what a little girl said. If that's the case, Wu Laicai will probably call her brainless."
Wu Laicai didn't lay a hand on her, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything nice; the complaints he heard made her feel suffocated.
Liu Fen decided in her heart that if the Qin mother and daughter dared to come to her door again, she would throw water on them and give them a good scolding.
"Your man is perfectly capable, why are you taking over? You're worrying about things that don't concern you. There are so many things to worry about every day."
Wu Laicai muttered to himself.
Liu Fen followed silently behind. See? She knew it would be like this.
After walking for a while, Wu Lai suddenly collapsed.
Liu Fen quickly turned away and pretended not to see anything.
Seeing him in such a disheveled state, he pretended not to know, even after being scolded for who knows how long.
Wu Laicai's body stiffened, and he suddenly lost his footing and fell, which was already embarrassing enough, but the fact that his face was facing the puddle and the muddy water entering his nose made him even more panicked and in pain.
His body was stiff; he couldn't move at all.
It opened and closed its mouth, blowing muddy water with a "whoosh whoosh" sound.
He could only pray that Liu Fen would pull him up quickly.
Liu Fen heard the noise but didn't dare turn her head, only wondering why she hadn't gotten up yet.
After a while, the noise continued. Liu Fen was puzzled and secretly turned her head to take a look. What she saw made her scalp tingle. She dropped the oil lamp in her hand and screamed, "My husband!"
That night, her shout was like a thunderclap from a clear sky.
Liu Fen, trembling, dragged Wu Laicai up and burst into tears while holding him.
Upon hearing the commotion, the Yang family immediately sent people out with oil lamps to investigate.
The people in the surrounding area also got up upon hearing the sound.
Soon, more than ten people surrounded Liu Fen and Wu Laicai.
"What's wrong with coming here?"
Yang Dashu asked in a panic.
"Waaaaah..."
Liu Fen was terrified and could only cry.
She was truly terrified. Her man had almost drowned in that little puddle if she hadn't come to pick him up.
Just thinking about that scene made her feel like her heart was being torn apart.
"Don't just stand there, quickly carry him home first."
Seeing that Wu Laicai looked weak but was still breathing, the villagers immediately offered their advice.
Yang Dashu bent down to carry him on his back. He was drunk and felt a lingering fear in his heart. They had been close since childhood. If something really happened to Wu Laicai, how would the two families get along in the future? He would feel guilty for the rest of his life.
A woman helped Liu Fen, and a man helped Yang Dashu hold Wu Laicai up so he wouldn't fall, and together they walked towards the Wu family's house.
When Wu Lai returned to the Wu family home, he had already recovered.
"Thank you everyone, I'm alright now, but I really almost lost my life just now."
Wu Laicai was still shaken after recovering from the shock; the feeling of not being able to breathe was incredibly painful.
"Lai Cai, what exactly happened?"
Someone asked, "Wu Laicai doesn't seem to have any illness; he smells of alcohol and is drunk."
Wu Laicai looked at Liu Fen, who was still crying, and said awkwardly, "Wife, thanks to you for coming to pick me up, otherwise I would have lost my life on the way."
Wu Laicai then recounted how his legs gave way and he had fallen into a puddle.
People were surprised and also sighed.
A puddle that doesn't even reach your ankles can drown a person.
Wu Laicai was unfortunate, but he was also lucky because his wife came to pick him up, which saved his life.
"I'll dig sand tomorrow and fill in all those puddles."
Yang Dashu was still shaken.
Even a tiny puddle can be fatal, so we can't be careless.
"Lai Cai, your wife saved your life, so you have to treat her well and stop scolding her all the time."
"Some people sighed."
Wu Laicai felt embarrassed. Everyone in the village knew that he had a bad tongue, and he himself didn't know why he could never say anything nice.
He looked at Liu Fen, wanting to thank her, but when he opened his mouth, his words changed: "She's my wife, she must have owed me something in her past life, and she should repay me."
"It wasn't me who saved you."
Liu Fen finally calmed down. She didn't care about Wu Laicai's harsh words. She thought of Su Dai and felt a deep respect for him. She dared not take credit for him.
If it weren't for Su Dai, she wouldn't have answered the call at all.
“During the day, Qin Xiucai’s family came to our house, saying they wanted to see the puppy, but before they even entered, their daughter suddenly said that if you hadn’t returned by midnight, she would ask me to come and pick you up. So it wasn’t me who saved you, it was that little girl named Su Dai. She is your savior, she is our family’s benefactor,” Liu Fen said solemnly.
