Chapter 5 Three Questions
Upon entering Liuzhou city, such a commotion attracted quite a few people who came to watch the play.
The Marquis of Anping of the Su family, a legendary figure who had won every battle for three years, was highly regarded by the Emperor in the capital. Even after returning to Liuzhou, he was a guest of honor in the Prefect's court. It was quite a surprise to see a good show at his house; I quickly followed him to take a look.
The Su family lived on South Street, a wealthy street filled with grand mansions.
The two gilded characters "Su Mansion" hung high, and the Qin family members stood in two rows, beating gongs and drums loudly.
"Lord Anping, Su Chang'an, unjustly divorced his wife who had shared his hardships, and the Qin family is seeking justice for their daughter."
The sound was deafening, but the Qin clan stood tall and proud, showing no fear even though they were dressed in plain clothes.
Such events were rare in the Jin Dynasty, but there were precedents.
There aren't many people who seek justice for women, but they do exist.
Qin Tianhai didn't care whether others did it or not; he was determined to do it because his daughter had encountered such injustice.
At this time, in the Su residence.
I was woken up by the loud noise of gongs and drums outside.
Hearing that resounding shout, everyone looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Father, Mother, Qin Tianhai has gone mad! Now the whole of Liuzhou knows that our eldest brother has abandoned his wife who shared his hardships. What will we do if word gets out?"
Su Changsheng said with a frown.
No one expected that a gentle, seemingly cowardly old scholar would be so daring.
His elder brother is already the Marquis of Anping, so why isn't the Qin family afraid at all?
"Brother, this matter needs to be resolved quickly, otherwise it will affect business."
Su Changshui frowned and said to Su Chang'an, "This matter was caused by my elder brother himself, so he should be the one to resolve it."
"Pah! Which bastard dares to ruin my son's reputation? The Qin family is a bunch of black-hearted bastards. Don't think I don't know what they're up to. Second son's family, third son's family, come with me and drive them away!"
Old Mrs. Yang spat fiercely, displaying the fierce demeanor of a mother hen protecting her chicks; she didn't need her son to get involved in such a trivial matter.
Her eldest son is now the Marquis of Anping. How could that old scholar from the Qin family see his son so easily? Many people have to send invitations to see her son.
Su Chang'an looked at Old Madam Yang and instructed, "Mother, Scholar Qin is usually a man of few words. We originally had a reason for this matter, so don't take action. If we do, we will be in the wrong."
Su Chang'an really didn't want to face Qin Tianhai. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he felt that Qin Tianhai was gloomy and cunning.
"Don't worry, Mother will never let anyone stand in the way of our family's rise to prominence."
Yang was arrogant and proud. The Su family had been farmers for three generations, and now they finally had an undefeated Marquis of Anping. The family had produced a high-ranking official, and the second and third sons were also good at business. The Su family was going to turn their fortunes around completely in this generation.
At this time, if the Qin family wanted to curry favor or cause trouble, Old Madam Yang would resolutely forbid it.
Liu and Lian were named, and they had no choice but to go even if they didn't want to.
Su Yu'e yawned and asked, "Mother, why is that family still coming? It's so annoying."
"They're just trying to get close to our family because your brother's successful. I won't let them succeed."
Old Mrs. Yang snorted coldly and walked outside.
Su Yu'e immediately followed.
Lian and Liu exchanged a glance and each gave a few instructions to their maids.
"Second sister-in-law, do you think we should remind my younger sister?"
As the two walked out side by side, Lian asked in a low voice.
Su Yu'e shouldn't have gotten involved in this situation; as an unmarried woman, she should have avoided any appearance of impropriety.
Seeing Su Yu'e following Old Yang and constantly speaking ill of Qin, Liu sighed and said, "Let's remind her, otherwise Mother will blame us later."
Being a daughter-in-law in the Su family is really not easy, especially when they think about Qin's fate, they all feel chilled to the bone.
A few years ago, when everyone was toiling in the fields, there weren't so many problems. Now that life is better, all sorts of rules and regulations have come into play.
Regardless of anything else, they were wives who had married into the family, while Su Yu'e was a pampered young lady.
There's no comparison.
"Mother, little sister, wait a moment."
After hearing Liu's words, Lian called out to Old Yang and Su Yu'e.
Old Mrs. Yang frowned: "What's wrong with you two? Instead of hurrying up, you're whispering behind each other. What kind of behavior is it to make me, the old lady, rush ahead!"
Old Madam Yang's face turned cold, and she decided to set some rules for her two daughters-in-law.
“Mom, my sister-in-law and I think our little sister shouldn’t go with us. She’s almost fifteen. If she goes and causes a scene, what will people think of her?”
Liu smiled obsequiously and said.
Lian Shi chimed in, "Mother, you know we're not a wealthy family, and we don't know much about these customs. If I've said anything wrong, please don't take it to heart."
The two women have always been close friends, and their collaboration is excellent.
Old Madam Yang frowned, thought for a moment, and then said, "Yu'e, go back. Don't go and join in the fun."
Su Yu'e pouted; she also wanted to go and see what was wrong.
But she knew her mother was doing it all for her own good, so she could only nod and say, "Alright then, Mom, you can talk to me properly later."
Su Yu'e turned back, and Old Yang glanced at Liu and Lian and said coldly, "Stop dawdling and hurry up. That family is banging on me outside and it hurts my ears."
Old Yang walked very fast, and Liu and Lian also quickened their pace.
The vermilion gate slowly opened, and the sound of gongs stopped.
"Don't you have any manners?! banging around so early in the morning, what kind of behavior is this?!"
Old Yang immediately roared, unleashing his aura.
After shouting, she found that there were people all outside the door. Old Yang was stunned. Why were there so many people?
Liu and Lian were also startled; there were far too many people. But what was the use? Qin had already been divorced, and the matter was over.
"Yang Cui of the Yang family, are you in a position to make the decision on this matter today? If you are, then I, Qin Tianhai, and my Qin family will talk to you. If you are not, then call out the person in charge of your family as soon as possible."
Qin Tianhai stepped forward, glanced at Old Madam Yang indifferently, and spoke loudly.
His face showed none of his former politeness or smile, only coldness and indifference.
For some reason, looking at Qin Tianhai like this, Old Madam Yang's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly raised her chin and snorted coldly, saying, "Say what you have to say, and then leave. Your daughter has been childless for three years. She has little fortune. I consulted a fortune teller, and he said she is a jinx to my family and has little fortune. She can't even have a son. It is perfectly justified for her to be divorced."
Old Madam Yang knew perfectly well that no matter how much the Qin family made a show of force, it was useless.
"Fellow villagers, please bear witness that my daughter was divorced without cause. Today, I, Qin, have three questions. If the Su family has a clear conscience before Heaven and the gods, then my Qin family should bow and apologize to the Su family before leaving."
Qin Tianhai turned to all the people who had come to watch the show and spoke loudly.
He clasped his hands in greeting before turning to Old Madam Yang and asking, "My first question is: Has my daughter disrespected her parents-in-law or disturbed the household?"
