Chapter 6 Retraction of the Divorce Letter
After asking his question, Qin Tianhai pointed to the sky and said, "Yang, there are gods three feet above your head. I believe in Heaven, do you?"
Old Yang swallowed back the slander that was about to come out of her mouth.
She moved her lips and said, "You can't say they beat or scolded us, but behind our backs..." We don't know about the curses.
Before Yang could finish speaking, Qin Tianhai shouted again, "Second question: My daughter has been childless for three years. Everyone knows that Su Chang'an has been away on campaign for four years and has returned home only a handful of times. If you accuse my daughter of being childless, then have you taken her to see any famous doctors in these three years?"
Qin Tianhai said this to tell everyone that a man's return home only happens a handful of times every four years, so the probability of him getting pregnant is extremely low. The Su family's attempt to pin a label on his daughter is not something that can be done lightly.
"She wasn't shortchanged, so why can't she go see it herself? Is that our fault?"
Old Mrs. Yang frowned.
Liu and Lian couldn't even get a word in edgewise, because Qin Tianhai's first words silenced them; he only spoke to the person in charge today.
In the eyes of the Su family, they were just outsiders; how could they make decisions?
"This is the third question. My daughter is respectful to her parents-in-law, manages the household well, and guards the empty house. Why did Su Chang'an, after returning from his campaign, not care about his wife and daughter but instead issue a letter of divorce and abandon her? The ancients said that a wife who has shared hardship should not be abandoned. Today, my daughter has suffered such heartless treatment. I, Qin, am heartbroken and cannot sleep at night. If the Su family does not give me an explanation for these three questions, I, Qin, will risk my life to appeal to the capital."
Qin Tianhai spoke with a resounding voice, raising his hands in a fist salute towards the sky.
Old Yang felt a headache coming on. What did it mean to not abandon a wife who had been abused, and what did it mean to take the case to the capital?
Where did the Qin family get the audacity?
Her son is the Marquis of Anping!
"You, how dare you! My son is the Marquis of Anping!"
Old Madam Yang roared these words in anger. Her son was already the Marquis of Anping, so how could Qin Tianhai still be so arrogant and even want to sue? Did he have a death wish?
"What's wrong with Marquis Anping? Isn't Marquis Anping bound by the laws of the Great Jin Dynasty?"
Qin Tianhai looked at Old Madam Yang and asked indifferently.
The Su family made a mistake by letting this foolish old woman out.
Old Madam Yang knew nothing and thought that her son could do whatever he wanted just because he had become a high-ranking official. Little did she know the undercurrents swirling around him.
Some things can't be brought into the light.
Marquis Anping was very powerful, but how many people secretly wanted to bring him down?
Qin Tianhai remained calm. Old Yang was provoked by him and was about to speak when Liu and Lian stopped her.
Lian even reached out to cover Old Yang's mouth, and the two quickly pulled Old Yang back into the house.
"Mother, you can't say things like that, you'll get my brother into trouble."
Both Liu and Lian broke out in a cold sweat.
Old Mrs. Yang hadn't figured it out yet, and only felt very frustrated.
Her son was a high-ranking official, so she could do whatever she wanted. This made Qin Tianhai use sarcastic remarks, and she couldn't retaliate. She was furious and broke free from the two men, pinching them both.
Old Yang showed no mercy, and Liu and Lian immediately cried out in pain.
"What use are you? You're utterly useless, you can't even say a few words!"
Old Mrs. Yang said angrily, feeling that being pulled back like this meant she hadn't won, and outsiders would probably laugh at her.
Liu and Lian remained silent.
The sound of gongs and drums could be heard outside again.
Old Mrs. Yang glared at her two daughters-in-law and ran towards the main room.
Liu and Lian quickly followed.
The whole family was in the main room when they heard the sound of gongs and drums starting again outside, and they all frowned.
“That Qin family is just being unreasonable. They’re asking me three questions and they’re going to take me to the capital. I don’t understand any of their convoluted arguments.”
Old Mrs. Yang was indignant. She thought she could resolve the matter, but instead she felt humiliated and angry.
She had no reason to refute what Qin Tianhai said.
Although she no longer looked down on Qin Shi, Qin Shi had worked hard and diligently when she was her daughter-in-law, and she wanted to say a few words of slander but ultimately didn't say them.
"Boss, go out and resolve this matter as soon as possible. It's not right for everyone to be crowding around our doorstep."
Old Man Su has spoken, so it's no surprise that Old Yang can't resolve the issue.
Su Chang'an nodded, got up and walked outside.
Seeing Su Chang'an leave, Old Madam Yang was worried and immediately followed him.
Su Changsheng and Su Changshui thought for a moment, then got up and followed them out.
Su Chang'an hadn't seen Qin Tianhai many times. He used to feel inferior in front of this scholar, but things were different now.
He held his head high and chest out, exuding an air of authority.
He had a dignified appearance and was considered handsome among the generals.
He opened the door and said coldly, "My fate with the Qin family is over. This entanglement will only make things difficult for them in the future."
Finally, the person in question appeared, but unexpectedly, his first words made Qin Tianhai laugh in anger.
"Lord Anping, you can rest assured. My Qin family only seeks justice and will not cause any trouble. It is hard to find a three-legged toad in this world, but there are plenty of two-legged men. Lord Anping, you don't need to pat yourself on the back."
Qin Tianhai hadn't originally intended to say that, but Su Chang'an was just too funny.
Upon hearing Qin Tianhai's words, the Qin clan burst into laughter.
The people laughed too.
Su Chang'an's face turned cold.
"So what do you want?"
Su Chang'an spoke in a cold voice.
"A wife who has shared hardship should not be abandoned. If Marquis Anping cannot answer these three questions, then I will withdraw the letter of divorce..."
Qin Tianhai was interrupted by Su Chang'an before he could finish speaking.
"The letter of divorce cannot be taken back. Qin and I are disgusted with each other, and there is no possibility of reconciliation."
Su Chang'an interrupted Qin Tianhai sarcastically, saying that it wasn't for reconciliation, but that asking him to take back the letter of divorce was precisely for reconciliation.
"Marquis Anping is too impetuous. I haven't finished speaking yet. They say it's hard to find a three-legged toad, but there are plenty of two-legged men."
Qin Tianhai's eyes were filled with mockery as he taunted Su Chang'an twice in the same spot.
People laughed again.
"According to the laws of the Great Jin Dynasty, a wife who has shared hardship should not be abandoned; only a divorce is possible. But if you can answer these three questions today, then the Qin family will accept this letter of divorce."
Qin Tianhai's expression turned serious.
Su Chang'an frowned and looked at Qin Shi.
Qin held Su Dai in her arms, both mother and daughter looking indifferent, and Qin's eyes showed no affection for him.
Qin Shi never treated her parents badly at home; on the contrary, she was very gentle and filial. She always suffered losses because her second and third younger brothers' wives were more cunning than her, but she never held it against them.
If he hadn't witnessed the splendor of the capital, he might have been able to live a good life with the Qin family. The Qin family had little opinion of their own, but Qin Tianhai did. He was educated and knew the law, so there was no point in arguing and making a scene. Taking it to the capital would only damage his reputation.
"It was my oversight. Let's take back the letter of divorce and agree to a divorce. This will preserve the last bit of goodwill between our two families."
Su Chang'an quickly figured out what to do. Originally, he divorced Qin Shi for convenience. It was a good thing that the Qin family didn't cause trouble. Even if the Qin family did cause trouble, he could change it to a divorce. It wouldn't have a big impact on him.
