Chapter 9 What Good Luck
In the morning, Su Dai got up and sat in the courtyard.
Her aunt, Zhao, came over to comb her hair. By the time she finished, the eggs in the kitchen were cooked, and her mother peeled them for her.
Su Dai felt very happy. She could eat eggs at the Su family home, but they were all boiled in sweet water, which she didn't like.
Su Jingui and Su Jinbao like to eat sweet boiled eggs.
"Aunt, would you like a little girl just as much if you had one?"
Su Dai asked Zhao Shi while eating an egg.
Su Dai knew that there weren't many people who liked girls in this area, but her aunt might really like her.
She secretly kissed her own hair several times.
"Yes, Su Bao is so cute and well-behaved."
Zhao adored Su Dai; he was so well-behaved and adorable, with fair skin and a very endearing appearance.
Sitting here, I look like a New Year's picture doll.
The Su family all said that Su Dai was weak and sickly. Zhao felt that the Su family had been mistreating him, because in the past few days, Su Dai had been eating well and was not picky about food, and had obviously gained some weight.
Su Dai looked at the faint light in Zhao's uterus and smiled, saying, "Aunt, you're pregnant."
Su Dai didn't know who was good and who was bad, so she decided to bless whoever made her happy, depending on her mood.
She was very happy staying at the Qin family's house; she received her blessing, but she wasn't very tired.
This is a completely different feeling from before.
"Su Bao, what... what did you say?"
Upon hearing Su Dai's voice, Zhao was stunned. When she came to her senses, she asked again in disbelief.
"My aunt has a baby in her belly, a very small one..."
Su Dai stretched out her small hand to compare, and it was smaller than a sesame seed.
But she knew it was a child.
Zhao suddenly laughed, but then she started crying again. She quickly wiped away her tears and said, "Su Bao, don't be afraid. Your aunt is just happy."
She regained her senses and realized that she couldn't take a child's words completely seriously. Her period had only ended half a month ago, so even if she was pregnant, it wouldn't be noticeable. But adults always say that children's words are very accurate because they might be able to see things when they are young.
Zhao was filled with anticipation and styled Su Dai's hair into beautiful pigtails.
Qin came out with the eggs, and her heart warmed as she looked at her clever daughter: "Sweetie, time to eat eggs."
Su Dai skipped happily over: "Mom, thank you for cooking the eggs for me. Mom's eggs are the most fragrant and delicious."
Su Dai always had a sweet tongue, because every time she said that, Madam Qin would smile happily.
Qin's smile was very warm, and Su Dai liked to see her smile.
"Then eat more, my sweet baby, so you can stay healthy."
Qin peeled the egg and handed it to Su Dai.
Su Dai took the eggs and went to eat them.
Qin noticed that Zhao's eyes were slightly red, so she went over and asked softly, "Sister-in-law, what's wrong?"
Zhao smiled and lowered her voice, saying, "Auntie, Su Bao said I'm pregnant. I'm so happy."
Qin was somewhat surprised, but soon became worried.
Before she could say anything, Zhao patted her hand and said, "Don't worry, Auntie. What Su Bao said is auspicious. It makes me feel at ease."
She said this to reassure Qin Shi that she had taken Su Dai's words seriously, but she wouldn't blame Su Dai for not having a child.
Qin was relieved.
The two of them went into the kitchen laughing.
When Qin Tianhai, Zhang Shi, and Qin Yulin returned from their half-day work, it would be time for dinner.
It was June, the busy season for farmers to weed.
Qin Yulin was weeding in the field of golden corn, and Qin Tianhai was there too. The father and son each managed one mu of the two mu of land.
Qin Yulin suddenly discovered a wild bird's nest. He dug half of the nest out with a hoe, revealing a nest of eggs inside.
"Dad, I found a nest of wild eggs!"
Judging by its size, about the size of an egg, it's definitely a pheasant.
Qin Tianhai heard the sound and popped his head up from the embankment. He jumped down and looked at it, then smiled and said, "You're really lucky, kid."
Qin Tianhai picked up the egg and shook it; it was still very fresh and he could take it.
If this nest is exposed, the pheasants will run away.
"Go get a basket to put these in. There are more than ten of them. Tell your wife to cook them and we can have a couple more."
Qin Tianhai said to Qin Yulin.
Wild game is a delicacy from the mountains and is highly nutritious.
Qin Tianhai couldn't stop smiling.
Qin Yulin smiled and took a basket to help pick up the rubble. After picking it up, he put it aside and continued working.
As the sun rose higher and the scorching heat intensified, the father and son, like other villagers, carried baskets and hoes on their backs and hurried home.
The wild eggs were covered with weeds, which were meant to be taken home to feed the pigs.
Just as he turned the corner, Qin Yulin saw Su Dai playing in the yard and called out with a smile, "Su Bao, come and see, your uncle has something good to show you."
On the way back, Qin Yulin wove a grasshopper out of weeds, thinking that Su Dai might like it.
Su Dai was watching ants in the yard. She was still young, and her mother, grandmother, and aunt didn't let her do anything.
Upon hearing the shout, Su Dai immediately smiled.
She ran out of the yard to Qin Yulin's side: "Uncle, Grandpa, you're back."
"Oh, what is this?"
Su Dai was amazed by the grasshopper in front of him, his eyes shining brightly.
This was something she had never seen before.
Qin Yulin was also very happy to see Su Dai's expression. He put down his basket and patiently explained, "Su Bao, this is called a grasshopper. Your uncle made it for you out of grass. You can play with it. Later, your uncle will take you to the field and catch some live grasshoppers for you to play with."
"Thank you, Uncle."
Su Dai carefully took it; it was extremely interesting to her. She took it aside and played with it happily by herself.
Both Madam Qin and Madam Zhao came out of the house.
Qin felt a surge of warmth in her heart as she watched this scene.
"Lan'er, I dug up a pheasant nest today and collected a nest of wild eggs. Dad said they're very fresh. You should take them and cook them quickly so we can have them as an extra dish for lunch."
Qin Yulin walked towards Zhao and said with a smile.
Zhao came over to look and exclaimed in surprise, "You're so lucky! These really are wild eggs. There are more than ten of them. You can cook one for each of you, and I'll make an egg soup with the rest."
Qin Yulin nodded: "Okay, you can arrange it however you like."
Qin followed her into the kitchen, saying, "Sister-in-law, let me help."
Zhao nodded.
Qin Yulin and Qin Tianhai went to wash up.
Zhang returned from the vegetable garden, picking some yellow leaves to feed the pigs and chickens, while keeping the good vegetables for her own consumption.
This is the season for eating radish sprouts.
"Grandma, please sit down."
Su Dai pulled Zhang to sit down and began massaging her back and shoulders.
Zhang's heart melted: "My dear, Grandma isn't tired at all, I'm full of energy."
Ms. Zhang used to suffer from headaches, but recently they haven't been so bad, and she feels much better.
"Grandma is in good health."
Su Dai said earnestly that this was someone who was good to her, and she was willing to bestow blessings upon him.
Su Dai yawned, and Zhang Shi took the opportunity to hug Su Dai.
"It's so beautiful. Go to sleep now. I'll wake you up when it's time to eat."
Madam Zhang looked kind and gently patted Su Dai.
Su Dai slept peacefully.
When Qin came out and saw this, she quickly went over and said in a low voice, "Mother, let me do it, you rest."
Her mother had been busy in the vegetable garden all morning, and when she came back she was still holding the baby. Qin felt sorry for Zhang.
