Chapter 25 The Death Was Truly Sudden
Qin Yulin and Zhao Shi had already arrived at the mountain.
Qin Yulin told Zhao about his plan.
Li Qiufen was pretending to be dying, so let's use this to cause her a lot of trouble. With so much trouble, she won't have time to scheme against him.
"Lan'er, don't you think I'm too bad?"
Qin Yulin was a little worried; his idea was quite insidious.
Zhao chuckled at his worried and anxious look: "How could that be? You did all this for me."
She didn't think Qin Yulin was bad; she only felt that his powerful aura made her heart pound, as if a drum was beating inside her.
As their eyes met, Zhao felt her face gradually burning. She lowered her head slightly and whispered, "You're so clever. I never thought of such a good idea."
Previously, Zhao only thought her husband, Qin Yulin, was honest and reliable, but today, her perception of Qin Yulin was completely refreshed. She realized that her man was so intelligent.
How did he come up with such a brilliant idea?
"It just popped into my head. Dad said we shouldn't have the heart to harm others. We shouldn't actively harm others, but we can't just stand by and watch others harm us. If we're going to do something, we should do it well. I'll definitely do better next time."
Qin Yulin was a little embarrassed. All his knowledge came from his father, Qin Tianhai, but he had never encountered anyone who wanted to harm him.
He had used this method against Zhao's plan, but he hadn't expected it to be so effective. Qin Yulin felt a surge of excitement and felt greatly encouraged.
He knew his father was a smart man, and that his profound truths were always right.
The two deliberately avoided the villagers so that Li Qiufen wouldn't be able to find him when she realized what was happening.
As it got dark, Zhao Dezhu and his son would be back soon. He and Zhao Lan would then go back, and if any villagers asked about it, they could simply sigh and recount the story.
Just imagining the scene at that time makes Qin Yulin feel relieved.
"Lan'er, let's roast eggs and melon."
If you're going to stay on the mountain, you can't go hungry.
Zhao's eyes lit up: "Where did you get this melon from?"
The eggs were brought from home this morning, but where did the sweet potatoes come from?
"The Zhao family took it."
Qin Yulin said with a smile.
The melons they took weren't big, only about the size of two fists, but with a few eggs, he and Zhao were full.
Zhao's eyes lit up when she looked at Qin Yulin; her man was truly formidable.
They lit a fire, put the raw pumpkin on it, and arranged the eggs around it. Soon, Zhao realized that these were raw eggs.
She couldn't help but chuckle.
Freshly baked eggs release steam due to heat, so the heat shouldn't be too high; eggs that are slowly warmed like this taste the best.
After eating, Qin Yulin took off his coat and spread it on the ground: "Lan'er, you take a nap, I'm going to cut some tree branches."
To put on a show, you have to go all the way, and he has to cut a lot of things out.
"I'll go with you."
Zhao smiled and shook her head. She wanted to be with Qin Yulin, just by his side.
Looking into her gentle eyes, Qin Yulin patted his head and said, "Alright, there might be snakes and insects in this desolate place. It'll be safer for you to sit next to me."
Qin Yulin was a hard worker, and he always chose the straightest and best branches to cut.
The Jin Dynasty placed great importance on both weddings and funerals.
People who are close to you usually come on their own initiative without needing to be invited.
Even those with some grudges will temporarily put aside their grudges and come to help if asked.
No one will be careless about either of these matters.
Funerals require many thin, straight branches, and Qin Yulin chose them carefully, treating Li Qiufen as if she were dead.
As the sun began to set, Qin Yulin bundled up a large bundle of branches, enough to cover the funeral arrangements, and he and Zhao Shi went down the mountain together.
The long branches trailed on the ground, making a sound. Someone saw it and immediately asked, "Young man, whose family are you? Which family is having an event?"
"Uncle, I am Zhao Dezhu's nephew-in-law. My aunt suddenly fell ill with a serious disease. Her body just collapsed like that. She hasn't eaten or drunk anything for three days. Today is the fourth day. Lan'er and I came to see her and we are very worried. I'm afraid she will pass away in the next two days."
Qin Yulin sighed and explained.
The man was shocked upon hearing this: "Is the Li family going to die? This is too sudden."
If someone is going to pass away, it's definitely necessary to prepare in advance.
Qin Yulin sighed, "It really was so sudden."
"Uncle, we also received the letter yesterday."
Zhao also came to Qin Yulin's side and spoke. She was also holding a small bundle and looked weak.
"Uncle, we need to go back quickly, so we won't say any more."
Qin Yulin continued walking forward, with Zhao following behind.
Before long, everyone in Banxinghua Village knew that Li Qiufen was dying.
Those who were on good terms with her immediately packed up and prepared to go visit her, carrying some eggs and such.
Qin Yulin dragged the tree branch into the yard. Zhao Caiju heard the noise and came out. She was shocked when she saw it.
"Zhao Lan, are you hoping my mother dies?"
Zhao Caiju turned her anger towards the Zhao family.
Zhao shook her head: "Caiju, how could you think of me like that? I'm doing this all for your own good. Your aunt hasn't eaten for four days. I can't ignore things that you can't consider."
Preparing in advance allows one to depart with more dignity.
This is the most filial way to treat someone who is on the verge of death.
Zhao Caiju was speechless. Of course she knew, but... but her mother wouldn't die.
Zhao sighed and said, "You're still young, it's normal that you haven't thought of that yet. The funeral clothes probably haven't been prepared yet either. I'll go find them later."
"You don't need to do that, I can go myself!"
Zhao Caiju quickly said, "If we go to find the funeral clothes, wouldn't that be cursing my mother to die early? Borrowing the funeral clothes of someone who is about to die means that even if she doesn't die, her lifespan will be taken away."
"Alright, you were supposed to handle this anyway."
Zhao nodded. Logically speaking, this was indeed something Zhao Caiju should do.
Zhao Caiju is taking on the responsibility now because she's afraid the girl will actually do it.
Zhao was naturally not in a hurry.
The main event will be when her uncle comes back.
Zhao went into the kitchen and first got water for herself and Qin Yulin.
Zhao Caiju didn't have time to cling to Qin Yulin right now; she went back to the main house to report to Li Qiufen.
Zhao smiled at Qin Yulin and said, "It's about time, let's steam the rice and cook."
Quite a few people came to see Li Qiufen; after all, she had to provide food for them.
Qin Yulin nodded: "Okay, I'll help you out."
Zhao rummaged through her belongings and steamed the Zhao family's rice with Jin Yuli (a type of grain).
The large steamer left by her parents came in handy.
Looking at the familiar household items, Zhao's eyes reddened. The place where her uncle lived was also her parents' home, and most of the things they used were left behind by them.
"Lan'er, don't cry."
Qin Yulin saw that Zhao Lan's eyes had suddenly reddened, so he went to her side, wiped away her tears, and gently comforted her.
Zhao Lan choked up as she said, "My father made this himself. My father and uncle were both carpenters, but my father's work was much better than my uncle's. When my father was alive, everything was the best."
