Chapter 64: Convincing the Captain

Su Qingqing finished speaking, but found that Su Mianmian did not answer her.

She turned to look at Su Mianmian, only to see that Su Mianmian had stopped what she was doing and was staring ahead, as if she was lost in thought.

Su Qingqing felt a little strange, so she waved to Su Mianmian and asked softly:

"Mianmian? What's wrong with you? Are you feeling unwell?"

Su Mianmian's thoughts were interrupted by Su Qingqing's voice. She came back to her senses and looked at Su Qingqing's concerned eyes, and her heart felt warm.

She took a deep breath, tried to calm herself down, and then whispered to Su Qingqing:

"Qingqing, look at the weather. I suddenly remembered something in a novel. It mentioned that in weather like this, there would be a heavy rainstorm, and all the people in the cattle shed of the Luwanwan Brigade were washed away by the water. I'm worried..."

Su Mianmian's voice gradually became lower. She looked at Su Qingqing, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes.

Su Qingqing was also stunned after hearing what Su Mianmian said. Although she was usually carefree, she now realized the seriousness of the matter.

She thought about it, then said to Su Mianmian firmly, "Mianmian, don't worry. Even if it really rains heavily, we can handle it together."

After saying that, Su Qingqing took Su Mianmian’s hand and went to find Shen Yuandao and Qin Huaichuan.

After the two explained their purpose, they saw that Shen Yuandao and Qin Huaichuan were silent.

"What do you think? I feel a little uneasy." Su Mianmian said in a low voice.

Shen Yuandao patted her shoulder.

"Don't worry, we'll go tell the captain and the others now so that everyone can prepare in advance. That way, even if a rainstorm really comes, we can minimize the losses."

Su Mianmian was a little stunned for a moment, and froze in place, "Don't you think I'm talking nonsense?"

Qin Huaichuan smiled and said, "Even if it's nonsense, we won't lose anything, right? In this weather, no one knows whether it will rain or not. If it doesn't rain, that's good. But if it does rain, what will happen to the food? The captain values food more than this."

Su Mianmian nodded, and the four of them went to find the captain.

The team leader was helping to harvest wheat in the field. Seeing the men coming, he put down his sickle, wiped his sweat with the towel around his neck, and asked, "What's wrong?"

Shen Yuandao said in a deep voice, "Uncle Captain, I think it might rain heavily."

The captain didn't object when he heard this. Instead, he said as if it was nothing new: "Wow! That's impossible. Based on my experience, it's just a drizzle for half a day, no big deal. As for a heavy downpour, that's even more impossible."

Shen Yuan said, "Captain, I know you won't believe me if I say this rashly, but just in case, if there's a heavy rainstorm, what will happen to the team's harvest this year? There's almost half of the wheat left to be harvested. The next heavy rain will destroy it all."

The captain's expression became more and more serious as he listened to his words, and it was obvious that he had also thought of the outcome.

Qin Huaichuan also spoke up when he saw this. "Captain, it's been hot and humid these past few days, and now it's suddenly cloudy today. What if it rains heavily?"

Shen Yuandao saw that the captain's face was a little moved, and continued: "Uncle Captain, there is not much wheat left. Let's split a group of people to move the harvested wheat to a higher place, and another group will continue to harvest the wheat.

This way, even if it rains heavily, our losses won't be too great, and if it doesn't rain heavily, we'll just be wasting our energy, right?"

The captain's eyes lit up. "This is a compromise. Let me discuss it with the villagers."

Su Mianmian and Su Qingqing breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this.

After the team leader made the decision, he hurried to find the village party secretary to discuss countermeasures.

When it was time to get off work, the team leader used a loudspeaker to gather the villagers at the threshing ground.

The villagers were tired after a long day, and they were hungry. They couldn't wait to go home to eat and rest.

They looked at the captain, their faces full of dissatisfaction and confusion.

"Captain, what's going on? I've been busy all day and I'm exhausted."

"Yes, Captain, can't we talk about it tomorrow? I'm hungry!"

The captain raised his loudspeaker and said loudly: "Everyone, please be quiet and listen to me."

He cleared his throat and continued, "I know everyone is tired, but for the sake of our village and our food, we must be prepared for the heavy rain. Next, I will divide the villagers into two teams. The men will follow me, and we will move the harvested wheat to the cave entrance in the back mountain. The terrain there is higher and safer. The other team will follow the Party Secretary and continue harvesting the wheat."

When the villagers heard what the captain said, they immediately looked dissatisfied.

They started talking among themselves and questioned the decision.

"Captain, why are we putting the wheat in the cave at the back? We'll have to move it down when the time comes. Isn't that redundant?"

"Yeah, Captain, why would you move to the back mountain?"

Anticipating this reaction, the captain patiently explained, "I think it's going to rain hard. We need to prepare in advance. Moving the wheat into the cave will prevent it from getting soaked and moldy. While it's a bit more laborious to move it up and down, it's better than having all the wheat ruined."

However, the villagers did not seem to buy it. Their years of experience told them that in such weather, it would only drizzle at most, and there was no need to be so nervous.

"Captain, are you kidding me? How could it rain heavily in this weather?"

"Yes, Captain, we have been going through this for so many years. It's not like we haven't encountered this kind of situation before, but it was just a drizzle."

The team leader knew that it was not easy to convince the villagers, and he was a little hesitant, but he thought that if it rained heavily, it would be all over.

Thinking of this, he took a deep breath and continued:

"I know you may think I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but please believe me, I'm doing this for everyone's good. We'd rather believe it than not. What if it really rains heavily?"

Although the villagers were still somewhat dissatisfied, they showed hesitation on their faces when they heard what the captain said.

"At most we will just be wasting some effort, but if there is a real rainstorm, what will we eat in the second half of the year? What if we don't have enough grain to pay? What's the point of working so hard all year round?" the team leader continued.

The villagers had all suffered from hunger. Although they were much better now, they were still uneasy because they had no food. Upon hearing this, they began to fall into deep thought.

"I'll listen to the captain. It's just moving food. It's a small matter."

"I also listened to the captain. If it hadn't rained heavily, we would have just been a little tired. If it had rained heavily, we wouldn't have lacked profit."

The captain was delighted to see that they agreed.

"Then it's settled. We'll move all tonight and take as much as we can."

The captain frowned and glanced at the sky after he finished speaking.
