Chapter 247
The moon is fullest on the 16th of the lunar month, but it is also full on the 15th of the eighth lunar month.
Under the moonlight.
Lingwu, holding the mooncakes, finally waited for Song Chunhua to return home.
Song Chunhua carried her precious floral cloth bag in one hand and pushed open the door with the other.
When he saw Ling Wu, there was a moment of hesitation on his wrinkled face, but it was quickly filled with a fierce look.
"You brat! Standing at the door like a ghost instead of sleeping, are you trying to scare this old woman to death? I advise you to give up your evil intentions. This old woman is tough and won't die so easily!"
She glared at Ling Wu with a sharp look, but as she turned to close the door, her hand gripping the floral bag tightened.
Lingwu coughed twice while holding the mooncake.
Song Chunhua closed the door even faster. She gritted her teeth and went inside, pouring hot water while cursing:
"You brat, you think I have too much firewood, so you insist on having a dead old woman serve you tea and water while you're in the cold wind!"
As she spoke, she handed Lingwu a bowl of hot water, saying, "Drink this bowl of hot tea. Don't end up with a fever and then worry about my savings for my funeral."
Seeing that Lingwu was holding the mooncake and couldn't free her hands, Song Chunhua frowned and snatched the mooncake from Lingwu's arms.
"Give it to me! Holding onto this piece of junk and refusing to let go, is it going to make you rich or curse me to death?"
Ling Wu smiled at Song Chunhua and took the old but clean small bowl from Song Chunhua's hand.
Two thin little hands held a small bowl, waiting for the hot water inside to cool down.
Sweetened by the smile, Song Chunhua pursed her thin lips, still keeping a straight face. "What? Are you pleased to see me serving you, Miss?"
"Grandma looks so good today, Xiaowu is so happy," Lingwu said to Song Chunhua, holding a bowl of hot water.
Song Chunhua paused for a moment, but then continued scolding, though her tone softened a bit, "You brat, I bet you're not happy unless you make me angry."
After saying that, she seemed to feel a little uncomfortable speaking gently, so she raised her eyebrows and looked quite fierce. "Hmph, are you asking for a beating again?"
"It doesn't itch, but the old lady's beating hurt terribly. I don't even dare to sit down now."
Lingwu puffed out her cheeks and blew on the hot water; her tear-stained face was flushed from the steam.
"I think you're just trying to slack off and this is an excuse you're using to avoid doing any work for me tomorrow. Take your pants off and come here so I can see."
"And let me tell you, you can have mooncakes if you want, but as long as I'm alive, don't even think about doing anything like stealing chickens or dogs!"
"That was the payment I received from Dayue for helping him with his homework," Lingwu explained, blinking her big eyes.
"...Really?" Song Chunhua narrowed her eyes, then sneered, "You brat, you can do other people's homework now?"
Seeing her say that, Lingwu put down the water she was holding and picked up a twig to draw on the ground.
Song Chunhua watched Ling Wu write each character carefully, a hint of a smile appearing in her eyes.
But soon she frowned and fumbled in her pocket with one hand.
When she touched the two one-cent coins she had just received as change for buying mooncakes, a look of helplessness slowly crept into her eyes.
"What did you write?" Song Chunhua asked in a cold voice.
"Grandma."
"Why are you calling me? I asked you what words you wrote. Are you calling me because I recognize them, or because they recognize me?"
Lingwu put down the branch, hugged Song Chunhua's leg, and said in a muffled but very dependent voice, "It says 'Grandma.' Teacher Li asked me what character I wanted to learn, and I said 'Grandma,' and the teacher taught it to me."
"You, you...you brat, all you do is learn this useless stuff!"
“Grandma isn’t useless,” Lingwu replied, tilting her head back.
Song Chunhua's heart, which had just softened, hardened again because of these words. "You brat, now you dare to make a fool of yourself by talking about an old woman like me?"
"Grandma is the most important person in Xiaowu's heart, no one can compare to her."
Lingwu continued to cling to Song Chunhua's leg.
The old woman's legs were very thin, even through her pants they were frighteningly thin.
When Song Chunhua looked down at Ling Wu, who was as thin as a chick, the scolding that was about to come out of her mouth turned into helplessness. "You come over here. What are you doing hugging me? You're a grown woman."
"No matter how old Xiao Wu is, she is still Grandma's Xiao Wu."
“You didn’t utter a sound when I hit you, but now all you can say is nonsense! Alright, I know you didn’t steal it. Take off your pants and let me see.” Song Chunhua pried Ling Wu’s hands off her legs.
Lingwu blinked and obediently responded.
Under the moonlight, the regret on Song Chunhua's face deepened even more.
That old hag, why doesn't she believe this brat?
She soaked a cloth in hot water and applied it to the little girl's bottom, blaming herself while muttering, "You brat, let's see if you'll still be so stubborn next time!"
Ling Wu remained silent until Song Chunhua whispered "brat" at the end, at which point she turned around.
"Grandma."
"Um."
“I saw the mooncakes in your floral cloth bag.”
Lingwu lay on Song Chunhua's lap, and looking up, she could see the opening peeking out of the floral cloth bag that Song Chunhua had hurriedly put down.
"You're so greedy! All you ever think about is food!" Song Chunhua was furious, but her initial regret turned into a sigh.
"That brat Da Yue is more cunning than a lotus root in the mud. He's not afraid of breaking your newly grown front teeth if he brings those mooncakes back!"
"Because the teacher said that eating mooncakes will bring family reunion next year, I want to stay with Grandma forever." Lingwu lay obediently on her stomach.
"...What did the teacher say?" Song Chunhua's voice suddenly became serious.
"Yes! Teacher Li said so."
"Okay then! What the teacher says is true!"
After Song Chunhua finished speaking, she picked up Ling Wu and took out the floral cloth bag.
After sitting down in the courtyard, she opened the bag and asked Lingwu to take out a piece from it.
Lingwu glanced at it; there were four pieces in total.
"Still looking! Why are you so greedy? Don't worry, even if this old woman finds this disgusting, it's all yours!" Song Chunhua pouted, her voice filled with disdain.
She seemed to genuinely dislike the food, and simply held Lingwu while looking up at the full moon in the sky.
Sigh, how far can two people go to reunite?
Hmph, who would want this brat if she left this old hag like me?
Just as she was thinking this, a piece of mooncake was suddenly stuffed into her mouth. She was about to get angry when she heard Ling Wu speak up first to explain:
"Teacher Li said that if the whole family eats, they can be reunited next year."
Hearing this, Song Chunhua didn't know what she was thinking, but for the first time, she silently swallowed the mooncake.
It's alright, quite sweet.
Even the hand holding the little girl tightened a bit more with sweetness.
Her eyes stung a little, but she still couldn't help but mutter, "You brat..."
