"Spelled?"
Su Xiaoning was startled and instantly tensed up. She remembered that she had once been told by a beggar that she was under a forbidden spell. Could this night watchman be the same as her?
The beggar seemed to see through Su Xiaoning's thoughts and said calmly, "You don't need to worry. It's not a forbidden technique on him, just a spell that temporarily confuses people. You should stay away from him."
After saying this, the beggar walked up to the night watchman, grabbed the watchman's shoulder, forced him to look at him, and muttered a long string of strange words.
Under the tense gaze of everyone, the night watchman suddenly shuddered, and his previously cloudy eyes gradually cleared. He desperately pushed the beggar away, kicking his legs wildly on the ground, and after breaking free, he sat on the ground hugging himself, trembling.
Seeing that the night watchman seemed to have woken up, Su Xiaoning stepped forward and cautiously asked, "Are you alright? We have some questions for you..."
"Don't ask me, I don't know anything!"
The night watchman suddenly screamed, interrupting Su Xiaoning's words. He grabbed his hair desperately, tearing out a large clump, but seemed to feel no pain at all, still shouting and refusing to let anyone approach.
"Please, please don't kill me! Don't kill me!"
No matter who tried to approach him, the night watchman would look terrified, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at something that wasn't there, lost in thought. By the end of his shouts, a suspicious wet patch had even seeped from his trousers.
An indescribable stench of urine filled the air, and the expressions on everyone's faces were varied.
Su Xiaoning sighed softly, trying to comfort the night watchman with good intentions, but the night watchman suddenly rolled his eyes, his body stiffened, and he fainted.
Unexpectedly, things developed in this way. The group looked at each other, speechless.
Jiang Fang scratched his head in frustration. He gave a signal to his men to take the night watchman away, telling them to protect him and interrogate him when he woke up.
After giving instructions to his men, Jiang Fang turned his gaze to the beggar, wanting to know what else he could do after cutting off the watchman's connection.
The beggar stood there, silently watching his men lead him away into the distance, when suddenly he spoke up: "I want to perform an autopsy."
Although an autopsy must be performed by a coroner, the beggar did seem to have some skill. Jiang Fang only frowned slightly, but still nodded in agreement: "Okay, I'll go with you."
"What are you going with me for?" The beggar raised an eyebrow, his feet rooted to the spot.
Jiang Fang remained silent, his face darkening. He had been careless not to go with the beggar to investigate earlier; now that the beggar's identity seemed increasingly mysterious, he had to be careful not to let him escape.
"You think I'll run away?" the beggar suddenly chuckled. "Fine, let her come with me."
He pointed, and then pointed at Su Xiaoning.
Su Qingcai frowned slightly, worried that Su Xiaoning would be frightened by the corpse. He was about to refuse when Jiang Fang stepped forward and pushed Su Xiaoning forward first: "Fine, let her go with you!"
Su Xiaoning herself was fine, but seeing that Su Qingcai's face suddenly darkened, she turned to comfort him and said, "It's okay, I'm not afraid."
"Be careful." Su Qingcai was still worried, watching anxiously as the beggar led Su Xiaoning into the village.
In the village, the beggar kicked open the door of a house and went inside first.
"Come in quickly."
An indescribable stench of decay wafted from the room, making Su Xiaoning uneasy, but she still mustered her courage and went inside.
As soon as she stepped into the house, she was so frightened that her limbs went weak and she almost fell to the ground.
I've seen corpses before, but the one lying in this room was so gruesome that it sent chills down my spine. The corpse's eyes bulged out in terror, its mouth was wide open, as if it had witnessed something terrifying before it died. All the blood in its body had been drained, and its skin was almost stuck to its bones—it was truly bizarre.
Su Xiaoning subconsciously took a step back. She wanted to go out but didn't dare to, so she could only press herself tightly against the door, her body visibly trembling slightly.
Upon seeing this, the beggar mocked, "You're afraid of even this little thing because you don't have a lucky charm."
He seems to really know everything...
Su Xiaoning opened her mouth, staring at the beggar with a look of surprise and astonishment: "Just how much more do you know?!"
"Heh." The beggar merely gave a mocking laugh and did not answer Su Xiaoning.
He bent down and tapped the ground. Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the corner of the room, and a group of mice filed out and surrounded him.
The beggar crouched down and spoke to the rats in a strange language. Soon, the rats scurried onto the corpse, tearing open its skin with their sharp teeth.
He... he used rats as tools for autopsies?!
Su Xiaoning's face was a mixture of emotions. She began to regret agreeing to come with him to perform the autopsy. The scene before her was indescribable; her stomach churned, she gagged a few times, and then simply closed her eyes tightly, unable to bear looking any longer.
Strange sounds of flesh being torn apart filled her ears. Su Xiaoning endured the torment for an unknown amount of time until, after a series of footsteps, the beggar's voice rang out.
"Let's go check out the water source."
"Okay..." Su Xiaoning cautiously opened her eyes. She didn't even dare to look at what the corpse looked like now. She quickly opened the door and ran out. Behind her, she heard only a faint chuckle from the beggar.
The beggar and Su Xiaoning found the village's water source. He didn't hesitate at all, dipping his hand in the water and tasting it. He smacked his lips, seemingly tasting something.
"How is he?" Su Xiaoning looked at the beggar with concern, afraid that something might suddenly happen to him.
"I don't need you to worry about me. You're the kind of guy who doesn't even dare to open his eyes during an autopsy." The beggar showed no appreciation whatsoever and even mocked Su Xiaoning, who had been trembling with her eyes closed not long ago.
Su Xiaoning felt embarrassed and her face turned red, but she didn't know how to refute it.
Seeing her glaring and angry expression, the beggar was extremely pleased. He curled his lips and turned to walk towards the village entrance: "Let's go."
We still need to inform everyone about the water source situation.
The beggar and Su Xiaoning returned to the village entrance, where the three men were still waiting.
Upon seeing the beggar return, Jiang Fang hurriedly asked, "How did it go?"
The beggar opened his mouth, about to explain the situation, when suddenly one of Jiang Fang's subordinates rushed over, breathless, and knelt down, shouting:
"Report! General, the Emperor has ordered you to come to the palace for an audience immediately!"
