"What the heck?"
Su Xiaoning stood there, completely bewildered, until a seashell from the grass hit her on the forehead. Only then did she turn around dejectedly and walk back to the dilapidated hut, glancing back every few steps.
Because of the so-called Fish God and Holy Maiden, no one dared to fish around the Moon Pond, which the Qin family had specially built to worship the Fish God. That beach had become the quietest place at this moment. Qin Yunyun and Qin Sang were quietly carrying buckets toward the Moon Pond, seemingly to catch fish.
Qin Yunyun huddled to one side, keeping watch for her father, casually counting the fish in the Moon Pond, and asked in puzzlement, "Dad, don't you think there are a lot fewer fish in the Moon Pond?"
"What's so strange about that? I deliberately set up the outlet of Moon Pond. Any fish that are a little big can't get out once they come in, while the smaller ones can. Some fish can also get out if they don't have food in their bellies. In the past, we just scooped them up, and the villagers would feed them for us. Now that no one feeds them, of course there are fewer and fewer of them!"
While catching fish, Qin Sang complained, her sinister triangular eyes turning back to peek in the direction of Su Xiaoning's dilapidated little house: "It's all the fault of that man who suddenly appeared and that stinking beggar, who cut off our source of income! I've already prepared the kerosene. When it gets completely dark, I'll set that little house on fire. Then Dad will spread some rumors that they'll have to help us feed the fish in the future!"
As darkness fell, Su Qingcai, who had been hiding in the bushes, quietly retreated and hurriedly returned to Su Xiaoning's dilapidated little house.
From afar, the aroma of seafood soup wafted from the small, dilapidated house. Under the dim light, a small, thin figure was busy at work, humming a tune whose name she couldn't quite place. Just listening to it, one could sense her good mood.
Su Qingcai's eyes flickered slightly as she quietly went inside, ladled herself a bowl of milky white fish soup, and naturally sat down at the three-legged dining table.
"Hey, wait a minute! It'll taste better if we sprinkle some chopped green onions on top!"
Su Xiaoning snatched the bowl from his hand, poured the soup back into the pot, sprinkled in the chopped green onions, and a fragrant aroma wafted out. She took a deep, satisfied breath before ladling a bowl full of dried goods and placing it in front of Su Qingcai: "Alright, you can eat now."
She picked up the bowl in front of her, sipped it slowly, and casually mentioned, "I've steamed the crabs in the pot. Before you leave after dinner, I'll pack them up for you to take with you. It's a local specialty of Carp Village."
Su Qingcai paused slightly in the bowl, a dark glint flashing in his deep eyes. He put down the bowl and chuckled, "How could I bear to part with my little sister whom I finally found? Naturally, wherever my sister goes, I, as her brother, will follow."
"Oh, so you're just like Qin Yunyun, addicted to acting too," Su Xiaoning rolled her eyes, not wanting to beat around the bush with him: "I know you're not an ordinary person, and you had no choice but to end up here, but as you can see, everyone in this village is as simple as me. We all make a living from the sea. Only the Qin family has ulterior motives. Don't think I'll leave you, this troublemaker, here!"
She lowered her head and stuffed conch meat into her mouth, saying indistinctly, "You leave at night. If anyone asks about it tomorrow, I'll say you stayed ashore for too long and died of thirst. Then there won't be any more fish gods in the village."
"Cough cough..."
Su Qingcai nearly choked on her words. He glared at her angrily, then suddenly thought of something and tentatively asked in a low voice, "Aren't you afraid that if I, the Fish God, leave, the Qin family will turn around and bite you back, and throw you into the sea again?"
Su Xiaoning's dark eyes darted around mischievously, and she covered her mouth, laughing non-stop. She rolled up her sleeves to show him the fish-shaped mark on her arm: "See? You're the one who said this in public. I've been trying to wash it off for ages, but I can't get it off. I guess this might be a blessing from God, letting me enjoy the simple and beautiful life in this little fishing village!"
"Simple, beautiful?" Su Qingcai pondered these two words quietly, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.
There was a scramble among the people, and Su Xiaoning felt that this clear seafood soup was exceptionally delicious.
But she still didn't expect that Su Qingcai, who looked so respectable, was shameless to the extreme. Not only did he steal most of the food, but he also took over her bed at night and slept like a pig.
She shrank back and pitifully nestled on the hay behind the stove, muttering that she would chase him away first thing tomorrow morning.
The village of Liyu was quiet at night, with only the sound of water splashing on the beach and the snoring of the villagers filling the night.
Suddenly, several dark figures quietly darted out from the east end of the village, heading directly towards Su Xiaoning's cabin. The two leading figures quietly poured two cans of kerosene on the wall of the cabin and lit a tinderbox, which they then threw onto the wall.
The sparks met the kerosene and spread unchecked, and in the blink of an eye, the small house was engulfed in flames.
Qin Yunyun removed her mask, a hint of reluctance flashing across her face: "Father, that man is so handsome. I could have found a way to capture him. Why did you have to burn him alive?"
Qin Sang spat and quietly retreated with Qin Yunyun and her brother: "Hmph! Only the dead are obedient. He's just a man, what's the big deal..."
Before they could finish speaking, the three of them froze in shock. The scattered firelight around them blended together, and the villagers of Carp Village, each holding a stick or harpoon, stared menacingly at the three members of the Qin family.
Su Qingcai, who was leading the group, helped the woman who was sleeping like a corpse on his shoulder to a higher position, and stared at Qin Yunyun with cold eyes: "I don't know what the Holy Maiden is doing burning down my sister's house in the middle of the night? Wouldn't it be better to use this time to catch some fish in the Moon Pond and sell them?"
