Chapter Seventeen Ambiguous Rumors

Su Qingcai had never been so close to Su Xiaoning before.

Su Xiaoning seemed completely unaware of her current situation with Su Qingcai. She put her hand on Su Qingcai's shoulder, stuck the hairpin in her hand into his hair bun, and showed a bright smile on her face.

"I knew this hairpin would suit you perfectly, and I was right!"

When Su Xiaoning smiled, her eyes crinkled into crescents. Her pink lips parted slightly, and she seemed to be bathed in sunlight, as if she were surrounded by a halo, which momentarily dazzled Su Qingcai's eyes.

In his eyes, Su Xiaoning's heart was like crystal and her face like a peach blossom, making her even more captivating than those alluring beauties.

A heart pounded violently in her chest. Su Qingcai clutched her chest and lowered her head in a panic, completely ignoring the hairpin in her hair.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Su Xiaoning didn't notice Su Qingcai's unusual behavior. She lowered her head and leaned closer to Su Qingcai, her face full of concern.

To onlookers on the street, the two appeared to be a couple deeply in love, whispering sweet nothings to each other.

Not far away, Ru Xing, who had witnessed all of this, looked extremely grim.

Her father hired a stricter etiquette teacher for her, and she suffered a lot during this time before being released. She wanted to get some fresh air, so she went out on the street, but she didn't expect to see such a scene after only a few steps!

What makes Su Xiaoning so close to Su Qingcai? Their intimate behavior doesn't seem like that of siblings at all!

As the flames of jealousy burned brighter and brighter in Ruxing's eyes, she desperately suppressed the urge to step forward and separate the two, and secretly came up with an idea.

Neither Su Qingcai nor Su Xiaoning noticed Ruxing. After struggling internally for a moment, Su Qingcai took off the hairpin from his hair and handed it to Su Xiaoning. Without saying a word, he strode away, his departing figure giving off a sense of fleeing in panic.

Su Xiaoning thought Su Qingcai was just shy. She teased Su Qingcai in her heart for a few moments, then grabbed the hairpin and chased after him.

The two went home together, chasing and laughing, having a great time.

I thought this peaceful life would continue for a long time, but I never expected that this peace would be broken a few days later.

Rumors have spread from Qinghe Town that Su Xiaoning and Su Qingcai are not siblings, but rather illicit lovers!

Ever since she saw Su Xiaoning and Su Qingcai's ambiguous behavior on the street that day, Ru Xing had been thinking about it. She went to great lengths to fabricate rumors, first spreading them around Qinghe Town, and then, as she wished, they finally reached Liyu Village.

The villagers of Carp Village all knew about this rumor, and they were all shocked.

Su Xiaoning and Su Qingcai have always appeared in front of them as brother and sister. Now, rumors have suddenly emerged that they are not brother and sister and are even having an affair. This is really hard to accept!

Su Xiaoning had heard some of the rumors circulating in the town, but she didn't care. She believed that the truth would prevail, so she didn't take the initiative to explain. However, she didn't expect that this would only deepen the villagers' misunderstanding.

One day, during a routine discussion, Su Xiaoning gave a passionate speech as usual and put forward some good ideas, but the villagers were all distracted and could not listen to what Su Xiaoning was saying.

“I don’t know if everyone has heard of the concept of ‘sustainable development.’ In the past, everyone would go out to sea to fish, and after they finished catching fish, they would move to another sea area. But I don’t think this method can guarantee that Carp Village can remain stable in the long run. The safest way is for us to keep some fish fry so that the fish can thrive in the future…”

As Su Xiaoning shared her thoughts, she carefully observed the expressions on everyone's faces.

The villagers all looked listless, seemingly not paying any attention to what Su Xiaoning was saying.

Su Xiaoning was unaware of the villagers' thoughts. She assumed her suggestion was unacceptable, so she cautiously said, "What I just said is something I've thought through carefully. I believe this is the best course of action for Carp Village at this stage. If anyone has any different opinions, please speak up now. I'm not intolerant of criticism..."

“Little girl, it’s not because of these things that we can’t listen!” Some impatient villagers shouted out, unable to hold back any longer, and asked the question that had been on their minds for a long time.

"Little girl, what exactly is your relationship with Lord Fish God?"

When asked about her relationship with Su Qingcai, Su Xiaoning was stunned. She stood there, speechless, and stammered, "I...I already told you, didn't I? We're just siblings..."

“Little girl, there are some things you don’t need to hide from us. Everyone can understand.” Aunt Xu stepped forward, speaking earnestly, “You heard the news that came from the town the other day, didn’t you? Some people said that you and Lord Fish God are not blood-related siblings, and even… that you were having an affair. There’s no smoke without fire. Don’t you have anything to explain to everyone?”

Upon hearing this, Su Xiaoning's heart skipped a beat, and she was immediately speechless.

So that's why the villagers were so distracted. But could she tell them she had deceived them? She felt she couldn't do that!

Su Xiaoning looked conflicted, unsure how to begin. Aunt Xu, having known her for a long time, could somewhat discern her thoughts. She stepped forward, sighed, and said, "Little girl, just tell the truth. Everyone in the village knows what kind of person you are, and they definitely won't blame you!"

Aunt Xu gave Su Xiaoning an encouraging look. Su Xiaoning looked up timidly and saw that most of the villagers' eyes were confused, not the disgust and aversion she had worried about.

Now that things have come to this, there's probably no need to hide it anymore.

Su Xiaoning secretly wiped the sweat from her palms and spoke with some difficulty:

"Fellow villagers, I am truly sorry. I admit that I deceived you, but it was out of necessity. Su Qingcai and I are indeed not siblings. It was just a lie I made up so that you wouldn't mistake him for the lofty Fish God..."

The villagers of Carp Village have always regarded Su Qingcai as the Fish God. They only started to interact with Su Qingcai normally after Su Xiaoning fabricated the lie about being siblings. Now that the lie has been exposed, it is unknown how the villagers will treat Su Qingcai in the future.

Su Xiaoning was filled with unease and was about to continue explaining the false rumors about her and Su Qingcai's "illicit affair" when the villagers burst into cheers, interrupting her.

"Great! You two aren't blood-related siblings, so you can get married!"
