Chapter 86 Lord Duan is truly a good person
She looked up and saw that the two of them were almost touching. Her full, moist lips were pressed against his neck, and she could faintly feel his throbbing pulse, strong and full of life.
The body above froze instantly, as if holding its breath, with only the pounding of the chest in front of it.
She stared in shock, then pretended nothing was wrong, carefully lowered her head, buried it in his neck, and slowly released her grip on his sleeve.
A moment later, the person on top of him slowly straightened up, lowered his knees that were pressed against his legs, and took two steps back.
The man's broad, tall figure was backlit, and his expressionless face was inexplicably unsettling. His gaze was fixed on her, seemingly calm, yet giving the impression of thick, churning black water buried beneath a calm surface.
Even when she looked down, she could feel his burning, sticky gaze above her, and her face couldn't help but flush red.
Neither of them spoke, and an unusual atmosphere subtly permeated the silent air.
In this awkward atmosphere, Tao Tao frantically racked her brains for a solution, trying to figure out how to get the two of them out of this particularly embarrassing situation.
This is so awkward! It's okay, it's nothing, but why isn't he saying anything? What does that mean?!
Are they waiting to see her make a fool of herself?
"Tao Tao..."
"Duan Gan!"
The two called each other's names at the same time.
This sound successfully brought a playful look to his eyes, as if it were the first time he had heard her call out his name.
His throat bobbed, he pursed his slightly red lips, and asked in a low, hoarse voice, "What did you call me?"
Tao Tao's eyes darted around, and she looked up, her eyes smiling as she met his gaze: "Lord Duan! May I ask what brings you here so late at night?"
He didn't answer, but leaned closer, his eyes narrowing dangerously as he scrutinized her face.
This form of address did not satisfy him; it was clearly not what he wanted to hear.
What was the first thing you called me?
He asked again.
Tao Tao is truly the first person who could make Duan Gan repeat the same question over and over again.
She paused, her bright eyes meeting his dark ones, and felt a sense of unease, as if falling into a bottomless abyss. She couldn't quite figure out what he meant.
Should they be punished? But to punish someone for a title seems like making a mountain out of a molehill.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck her, and she tried to seize it, but it quickly vanished.
Tao Tao tentatively called out again, "Duan...gan..."
The clear, crisp voice lingered, with a soft, mellow ending.
Duan Gan hummed in agreement, a smile playing on his lips. He reached out and pinched the back of her neck, but quickly withdrew his hand.
She looked at him strangely, wondering if there was something wrong with him.
Suddenly, a noise came from the side room on the right. Tao Tao quickly pulled the person out and leaned against the door. The sound of dragging footsteps echoed in the quiet courtyard.
She only felt relieved when she could no longer hear any sound.
But the next second, she sensed something was wrong. She looked down and saw that her hands were clasped together, her right hand holding his left.
She quickly pulled it out and hurriedly explained, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, it was just too urgent."
"You didn't do it on purpose? So it was intentional?"
Perhaps it was the comforting breeze of the summer night that made her inexplicably hear a gentle whisper in that statement, which wasn't really a question.
I'm completely obsessed. Gentle? How could anyone equate him with that?
"...No, it was just an accident."
Duan Gan looked down at her embarrassed appearance and stopped teasing her.
"Have other people come to your house?"
He could feel other people breathing.
She gasped, then asked in surprise, "How did you know?"
"Oh, it was Zhang Cheng who told you that, right?"
Wasn't he and she together at the mass grave?
"Don't pick up random things, especially people, or you'll suffer the consequences," he advised her.
When he found out, he specifically sent someone to investigate. Fortunately, it turned out to be just a servant who had been abandoned in a mass grave to fend for himself and posed no danger.
But what about next time? What if she gets too kind and picks up some weird stuff again? She'll learn her lesson when she gets what she deserves.
She glared at him unhappily: "I didn't pick up anything randomly. Why do you make me sound like a beggar picking up trash? Besides, I asked her about her background, and she's a person with a hard life."
"We're both ordinary people, and she was desperately begging me for help, I couldn't just ignore her, could I?"
“Unlike you, she was just a lowly person.”
Although his tone was indifferent, to her ears it sounded like a superior looking down on a subordinate.
The lowest social class, even lower than the common people, was those who were labeled as such. They were forbidden from ever being allowed to leave the community and their descendants would live their entire lives under the contempt and disgust of others.
Moreover, her indenture is still in the hands of the Yang family. Once the Yang family finds out she is here, they can use the indenture to coerce her to return.
Tao Tao felt a vague sense of unease.
"In my eyes, it's a human life, nothing else matters."
"If it's a truly wicked person, would you still save them?"
"It depends on what aspect. There are no absolutely bad or good people in this world. Some people may appear to be doing bad things, but in reality, they are helping the common people. Others may speak righteously, but they are doing it for their own selfish desires. This is not uncommon."
"What if it were you?"
Upon hearing his words, she immediately replied without hesitation, "A bad person, absolutely a bad person!"
In the dim light of the night, one could clearly hear the person in front of them chuckle softly.
"What are you laughing at? Is it that funny?"
She reached out and shoved him in an annoyed tone.
Even she didn't realize that the two of them were becoming more and more familiar with each other. She no longer felt any fear in front of him, and her tone of voice was worse than that of others. She even dared to hit him.
Duan Gan took a piece of paper from his sleeve and handed it to her.
"What's this?"
She took it with a puzzled look and examined it carefully in the dim moonlight. Suddenly, she heard him say in her ear, "The land deed for the shop in the west of the city."
"Didn't you want that shop? I've had it taken over."
Tao Tao paused for a moment. She and Yu Shan went there together that afternoon. How did he know?
He's spying on her? That guy's a psychopath.
She looked up at him suspiciously and asked, "You're just giving it to me like this? Or are there any conditions?"
He countered with, "What do you think I require?"
“I think… you don’t have any demands, you just want to do good deeds.”
He snorted: "Whatever you think."
"Thank you, Lord Duan. When I go to burn incense and pray to Buddha in the future, I will definitely bring you a share, so that the gods may bless you with a long and healthy life."
Her eyebrows were curved, her face was full of smiles, and she looked charming and cute.
Anyone who gets such a land deed for free would be overjoyed.
