Chapter 154 What will you do without me?

The smile on Lu's mother's face turned a little strange as she glanced at Lu's father beside her.

Su Ping didn't notice the interaction between the two, and just as she was about to refuse, she heard Lu's mother trying to persuade her to stay.

"Pingping, it's all my fault for being so engrossed in chatting with you that I didn't notice the time. There's a clean guest room at home, why don't you stay here tonight and have Ayan take you home tomorrow?"

A clap of thunder sounded outside, just in time to signal that heavy rain was coming.

Su Ping didn't hesitate and nodded in agreement.

The courtyard seemed even colder at night. Afraid that she would get cold, Lu's mother said she would have someone bring her a blanket later.

Su Ping then noticed that there seemed to be a lot of talismans pasted on the wall, which looked rather eerie.

The knocking sounded somewhat abruptly.

Su Ping walked over and opened the door, seeing a woman standing outside with a blank expression, holding a blanket.

Su Ping recognized her; she was one of the people sweeping the floor during the day.

Just as she was about to say thank you, she remembered that Lu Zhiyan had said they were deaf and mute, so she nodded, smiled at her, and took the blanket.

The woman seemed to be completing a task, handing her the blanket before turning away with a blank expression.

It was eerily quiet.

A flash of lightning outside made Su Ping realize that the window was open.

Worried that rain might drift in later, Su Ping went over and closed the window.

As a result, several people were seen hurrying in from outside, holding umbrellas, in the heavy rain.

Before she could look closely, she heard another knock on the door.

It is Lu Zhiyan.

"Pingping, the stairs are slippery and easy to fall on rainy days, so you shouldn't go out at night."

Lu Zhiyan handed her the warm milk.

Su Ping smelled the scent wafting from him; it was the scent of Chinese herbal medicine.

Are you sick?

Lu Zhiyan was stunned. Was her nose really that sensitive?

You're smelling it wrong.

Seeing that he was unwilling to say more, Su Ping did not press him further.

Lu's father seemed to be quite strict with him.

The entire courtyard fell silent by 9:30, and not a sound could be heard outside.

It rained, and the weather was muggy.

Su Ping woke up in the middle of the night because of the heat.

She turned on the light, intending to go downstairs to get some water.

It was quiet outside, with only the warm yellow wall lamps flickering dimly.

The clattering sound of slippers on the wooden stairs was particularly jarring in the quiet night.

My shadow on the ground flickered under the lamplight, as if someone was following behind me.

Su Ping suddenly felt a chill run down her spine; she shouldn't have gone downstairs!

"Demons and monsters, get out of here..."

Su Ping kept muttering to herself until they finally reached the first floor.

The window was open, and you could hear the pattering rain outside.

She couldn't help but think of the people who walked in from outside.

It seems like she's carrying a box. Could it be that Lu Zhiyan is sick?

But something's not right. Lu Zhiyan's room is on the second floor, diagonally opposite hers, and those people were clearly not coming from this direction.

She had just finished getting the water when she turned around and saw a woman staring at her from a short distance behind her.

Under the light, her face looked pale, which startled Su Ping.

It was the same woman who wore the black cheongsam during the day.

When exactly did she arrive? She didn't make a sound when she walked.

"Miss Su, why aren't you asleep yet at this hour?"

The woman grinned and greeted her.

The white, neat teeth looked somewhat menacing, and Su Ping patted her chest with lingering fear.

"I was thirsty and thought I'd come down to get some water."

The woman stared thoughtfully at the cup in her hand and nodded.

"Miss Su, please go back to your room early after you finish your water. The master doesn't like people walking around the house in the middle of the night."

What kind of strange rule is this?

Su Ping expressed her incomprehension but respect.

After watching Su Ping go upstairs, the woman withdrew her gaze and disappeared into the shadows.

A strong wind seemed to be blowing outside. Su Ping listened to the window being banged on at the end of the corridor and her brow twitched.

Although the corridor wasn't very long, it seemed pitch black because the lights there were broken due to the rain.

It was like an invisible giant net, luring her over.

Su Ping swallowed hard, then decisively turned and went back to her room.

The howling wind behind her continued, and her intuition told her that there must be some unknown secrets hidden in this house.

But curiosity often kills the cat.

When I woke up the next morning, the rain had stopped.

Lu's mother got up early, and when Su Ping came downstairs, she had already finished copying the scriptures and was offering incense.

Their family seems to place particular importance on these things.

Hearing the sound, Lu's mother put the incense sticks in the stove and turned to look.

"It's screened up?"

"Lu's mother really likes me," Su Ping thought, recalling the scent she smelled on Lu Zhiyan last night, and couldn't help but ask.

"Auntie, has Zhiyan been taking medicine lately?"

Lu's mother thought she was worried that Lu Zhiyan's poor health would cause inconvenience after marriage, so she quickly explained.

“When Ayan was born, a master said he had a cold constitution and wrote a prescription that he said would work. Don’t worry, Ayan is very healthy in other aspects.”

Thinking about Tie Niu, Su Ping asked, "Does Zhi Yan have any other brothers?"

The smile on Lu's mother's face faded, and she looked at her with a hint of melancholy.

"We had a child late in life, and Ayan is our only child."

"Pingping, why do you ask that?"

Am I overthinking things?

Su Ping shook her head and said she was just asking out of curiosity.

After breakfast, Lu's mother wanted Su Ping to stay a little longer, but seeing that she insisted on leaving, she did not force her to stay and gave her a pair of bracelets as a gift.

After watching the two get into the car and leave, Lu's mother looked at the woman in the cheongsam beside her.

You said Pingping went downstairs last night?

The woman nodded and briefly recounted what had happened the previous night.

"She didn't go anywhere else, did she?"

Lu's mother was worried when she thought about what happened last night.

"Don't worry, Madam, I saw her go upstairs after she finished drinking the water."

Mother Lu was relieved. Last night's events were very sudden, and that matter must not be known to outsiders.

Mother Lu's gaze was somewhat sharp. The servants not far away seemed very frightened, keeping their heads down and silently sweeping the withered branches and leaves that had been blown down last night.

It seems we should get Ayan married to her as soon as possible to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

Su Ping developed a fever that very night after returning from the Lu family. When she received Li Moyu's call, the sound she made startled even herself.

She just took a nap, how come her voice sounded like a duck's when she woke up?

"You didn't even realize you had a fever?"

After paying the bill, Li Moyu returned, opened the door, and began to berate Su Ping.

"The doctor said if the fever continues, your brain might become damaged."

Su Ping, with an IV drip in her hand, managed a weak smile.

Li Moyu had originally called to gossip about her progress with Lu Zhiyan last night, but seeing her listless state, she lost interest.

"You said you'd do what you would do without me..."

Li Moyu leaned down and pinched Su Ping's cheek.

It's so soft, it feels so good. Why is her skin so good?

Li Moyu squeezed it a couple more times, clearly delighted.

Su Ping felt pain from her pinched cheek: "Stop playing around, have some consideration for me, a patient."
