Chapter 58 The Master with Red Eyes

Fang Cili's mind was in turmoil.

What did Lin Chuan say?

He said he's going to take the college entrance exam next year?

Fang Cili was incredibly excited, and his hands were trembling.

Wei Shue'e's face was full of joy. "Old Fang, did you hear that? Lin Chuan said he's going to take the college entrance exam. He's going to study again, Old Fang. Isn't that what you most want him to do? Quickly call him in."

Fang Cili remained unmoved. "That kid's shrewd. He knows exactly what I care about, and he just says it. If he doesn't leave and just stands there, he'll freeze away in no time!"

Wei Shue was furious. "I really can't be bothered with you!"

Lin Chuan knew that Fang Cili would definitely hear what he said.

He did say things that concerned him, but it was the truth.

You can't just come all the way here, say nothing, and leave people guessing.

Time passed second by second, and Lin Chuan felt that his hands and feet were already frozen.

Every movement felt like being pricked with needles.

Each breath felt like it was freezing my lungs.

Lin Chuan didn't know how much time had passed when snowflakes began to fall gently, landing on his clothes.

Normally, it might not be so cold after it snowed, but now Lin Chuan is frozen stiff and cold no matter what.

Wei Shue washed two pieces of clothing, then returned, still feeling uneasy.

Fang Cili stood motionless by the window.

The master and apprentice were one inside and one outside.

Seeing the snowflakes falling gently outside, Wei Shue finally couldn't hold back any longer. "You stubborn mule! I don't care about you, but I have to take care of the child. You're inside, why don't you go outside and freeze!"

Fang Cili remained silent, only looking at Lin Chuan through the glass.

Ignoring all that, Wei Shue pushed open the door and went out. "Da Chuan, come on, let's go inside and warm up. This weather is freezing, it'll kill us if we get too cold."

Lin Chuan opened his mouth, "Master's wife, I... my master..."

"Never mind him. This house is half-owned by your master's wife. What, you can't get her to let you in?"

Wei Shue pulled Lin Chuan into the house.

Lin Chuan's body was already stiff, and every movement felt difficult.

He went inside, and Fang Cili looked up at him from the window of the inner room, then walked past him without saying anything.

Lin Chuan knew that although Fang Cili hadn't said anything, he had already tacitly forgiven him.

He has already taken a big step forward.

Wei Shue pulled Lin Chuan into the kitchen and brought him a chair. "Da Chuan, quickly take off your clothes and shoes and warm yourself up by the stove."

As she spoke, she ran into the house and poured a large mug of hot water, stuffing it into Lin Chuan's hands. "Hurry up and drink something hot to warm yourself up."

Lin Chuan smiled and said, "Thank you, Master's wife."

He had been frozen for so long that even holding a hot teacup didn't feel warm; instead, his fingers felt a burning pain.

The same goes for feet.

Although it was very hot by the stove, he didn't dare get too close; it needed to warm up gradually.

Because Wei Shue felt sorry for him, Lin Chuan wasn't frozen for too long.

Less than half an hour later, he felt much better, although his fingers, toes, and face still felt a little hot.

Wei Shue was preparing to cook when Lin Chuan stood up and said, "Master's wife, let me do it."

Wei Shue thought for a moment and decided that it would be fine to let Lin Chuan cook. Fang Cili ate the food Lin Chuan cooked, and let's see what else he could do to make a fuss.

Lin Chuan brought the meat back from outside, cut it, and then cooked some caramelized sugar before putting it directly into the pot.

The pan sizzled and crackled, and after a few stirs, it turned a caramel color. Then, the aroma of meat wafted out.

Lin Chuan scooped water into the pot and added ingredients.

Firewood was added to the stove, and soon the large chunks of pork belly in the pot began to simmer.

Although Fang Cili was in the inner room, who could resist the aroma of meat wafting over?

He couldn't help but swallow hard, then walked to the door and peered into the kitchen.

Lin Chuan didn't bring rice or wheat flour, so Wei Shue gave him some cornmeal that morning. He simply stuck cornmeal pancakes onto the side of the braised pork pot.

Then he made a light radish soup.

The cornbread is pasted out, and the bottom is golden brown.

The pork belly was scooped out of the pot, trembling precariously, glistening with an enticing sheen.

Lin Chuan placed a whole pot of shredded radish soup on the table, wiped his hands with his apron, and called out, "Master, Mistress, dinner is ready."

Wei Shue washed her hands and came over. "Da Chuan, your cooking skills are really amazing now."

"Master's wife, try it and see if it suits your taste."

Wei Shue called out inside, "Old Fang, didn't you hear me? What are you dawdling about for? If you don't eat, then Lin Chuan and I will eat too."

Fang Cili then slowly walked out of the inner room.

He washed his hands, and Lin Chuan quickly handed him a towel.

Fang Cili glanced at Lin Chuan, took the document, wiped his hands, and then sat down at the table.

Lin Chuan ladled out two small bowls of shredded radish soup and placed them there, then handed over the chopsticks.

After doing all this, Lin Chuan untied his apron, hung it behind the door, and then went to get a scarf to put around his neck.

"Master, Mistress, please enjoy your meal. I won't disturb you any longer. I'll head back now and come back another day."

Fang Cili slammed his chopsticks on the table with a "bang," and said, "Sit down and eat!"

Lin Chuan paused in his movements, "Master..."

Fang Cili snorted, "You keep calling me Master, but you won't even eat a single meal?"

Wei Shue quickly waved to Lin Chuan, "Come on, Da Chuan, sit down and eat. There's no reason to cook and then not eat."

Lin Chuan put down his scarf, pulled out a stool, and sat down opposite Fang Cili.

Wei Shue quickly went to get another bowl and a pair of chopsticks.

Lin Chuan busied himself, "Master, Mistress, quickly try the braised pork I made and see how it tastes."

Wei Shue first picked up a large piece of braised pork and put it in her mouth, her mouth filled with its aroma.

"Da Chuan, this meat you cooked smells amazing."

Fang Cili picked up a piece of meat; it was fatty but not greasy, lean but not dry—truly delicious.

Then, a sip of the refreshing radish soup completes the meal, making it truly delicious.

Lin Chuan took a large flatbread and ate it silently.

After a long while, Fang Cili finally put down his chopsticks. "Is what you just said true?"

Lin Chuan swallowed what was in his mouth and didn't pretend to be stupid. "Master, I have indeed severed ties with my previous adoptive parents. I have moved back to my biological parents' place with my wife and child."

"Opening a shop in the county town was something that happened after we moved back."

"And most importantly, I'm setting aside time to study every day now, and I'll definitely take the college entrance exam next year. I can't guarantee I'll pass next year, but Master, you said that as long as you put in the effort, even an iron rod can be ground into a needle. I will persevere until I pass."

Fang Cili was very pleased to hear this.

Lin Chuan was surprised to find that Fang Cili's eyes were red.
